MARK SCHEME for the May/June 2014 series

3204 BENGALI

3204/02

Paper 2 (Language Use and Comprehension), maximum raw mark 110

This mark scheme is published as an aid to teachers and candidates, to indicate the requirements of the examination. It shows the basis on which Examiners were instructed to award marks. It does not indicate the details of the discussions that took place at an Examiners’ meeting before marking began, which would have considered the acceptability of alternative answers.

Mark schemes should be read in conjunction with the question paper and the Principal Examiner

Report for Teachers.

Cambridge will not enter into discussions about these mark schemes.

Cambridge is publishing the mark schemes for the May/June 2014 series for most IGCSE, GCE

Advanced Level and Advanced Subsidiary Level components and some Ordinary Level components.

Please note: the answers are written in note form for ease of reference. It is expected that the candidates answer in sentences in their own words.

4 maximum marks per question for content +2 maximum marks per question for language.

Beware of lifting.

Lifting = word-for-word copying from the text instead of an answer that is tailor-made to the question. Often a candidate who lifts will copy large chunks of text in the hope that the

Examiner will be able to select the relevant bits that might constitute an answer, which is NOT allowed.

2 language marks: clear appropriate language and vocabulary in the candidate’s own words.

Few technical errors and no lifting.

1 language mark: for partially successful communication of the answer, but with a few errors and occasional lifting.

0 language marks: thin, inappropriate use of language and limited vocabulary. Response can be confused and/or obscure. Basic errors. Heavy reliance on lifting.
