Dear Change4Life local
supporter,
The bell is about to ring for the end of term which can mean just
one thing… the SUMMER HOLIDAYS are here!
At Change4Life we want to help children have lots of fun this
summer and make sure that even though they are not getting their
usual timetable of sport and games, they still get their 60 active
minutes every day – and we think we’ve come up with the perfect
solution - the really big summer adventure.
This is the first time Change4Life has developed resources
especially for children and teachers and we hope you find them
not only useful but lots of fun.

To get the ball rolling, a teacher resource booklet
for Key Stage 2 - flexible enough to be adapted
for the whole school - is being sent to all primary
schools via the School Fruit and Veg box to
inspire teachers to run a really big summer
adventure session towards the end of term.
Look out for a Change4Life box which
will be arriving through the scheme in
early July containing enough really big
summer adventure maps materials for
children in years 3, 4 and 5 which we
hope you can give out.
At Change4Life we are always on the
lookout for new and innovative ways
to get children and families active and
eating more healthily, especially over
the holidays when it can be difficult
for them to get their daily 60 active
minutes without their usual timetable
of school sport and games.
To kick-start the adventure, we would love all primary schools
in England to run a really big summer adventure session as part
of their end of term activities. To help teachers do this we
have developed a teacher resource booklet with suggestions
for how schools can take part. This will be delivered to schools
from the 6 June via the School Fruit and Veg box.
the really big summer adventure will take children and their families
on a six week journey with the really big summer adventure map to
guide them. Jam-packed with enough activities for the WHOLE of
the summer holidays, children can use the map to pick and choose
activities each day, complete a challenge each week and along the
way create their own personal really big summer adventure.
We also hope that teachers will give out
the really big summer adventure maps to all
children in years 3,4 and 5. The maps will
be arriving in schools in a Change4Life box
from the 4 July, again via the School Fruit
and Veg box.
Also, don’t forget to check out the
Change4Life website, where you
will find toolkits and downloadable
resources.
the really big summer adventure
also marks Change4Life’s return
to television screens and you’ll
be hearing about this exciting
campaign in newspapers and at the
supermarket.
Your really
big summer
adventure
To make the most of this new campaign and
encourage children and their families to get active
this summer, we’d be thrilled if you would consider
running a really big summer adventure session
for your pupils. We have developed a resource
booklet aimed at Key Stage 2 teachers but
flexible enough to be adapted for older
and younger students or to include the
whole school. If you haven’t done
so already, you will shortly be
receiving a resource booklet.
The sessions in the teacher resource booklet
are designed to fill an hour, but if you have
more time and are looking for activities to fill
a half or even a full day visit
nhs.uk/c4lschools for more suggestions.

We’d also like to ask for your help in distributing the really big summer
adventure map. Aimed at children aged 7-10 and chock-full of suggestions
for a fun-filled summer, we hope our really big summer adventure map will keep
children active and entertained this summer. From July 4, your school will receive a
Change4Life box via the School Fruit and Veg Scheme containing enough maps for
every child in year 3, 4 and 5 to take home over the summer holidays.
Your Change4Life box will also contain other Change4Life goodies as well as news
of how to enter the really big summer adventure competition and win exciting
prizes for your school.
How you can take part...
Your school is the perfect place to let pupils know about the really big
summer adventure. As well as holding a really big summer adventure session
it would be great if you could let children know about the campaign and the
importance of doing 60 minutes of physical activity every day by mentioning
it in assembly or during a class discussion.
Around the school
• Create an air of excitement leading up to
your special really big summer adventure
session by downloading some really big
adventure posters and using these to
decorate the school dining room, library or
gymnasium.
• Enlist the help of your canteen staff to
create a really big summer adventure menu
for your activity day – visit the School Food
Trust’s website for tasty recipe ideas.
• Give pupils a taste of summer by cooking
together in lessons - Let’s Get Cooking has
lots of easy dishes to try.
In the classroom
• Visit the schools section of our website
where you can download posters
promoting the health benefits of PE, eating
a healthy breakfast and walking to school.
• For a fun way to teach children about
healthier living, order our snakes and

• Encourage your younger pupils to take
part in the summer fun by giving them a
Change4Life fun wheel. Full of activity

parents or your school website. Download the
editorial here.
• We have a range of free, helpful booklets and
resources to give out to families – check out

online survey. The survey only takes a few
minutes to fill out and in return parents will
receive personalised advice on healthy eating
and physical activity . Alternatively, you can
order copies of the survey to give out to
parents by calling 0300 123 3434.
And don’t forget to keep an eye on the Change4Life website for more news, tips and
resources to help you make the most of the really big summer adventure.
We hope you really enjoy making the really big summer adventure a really big success.

FLIP! is no flop!
What’s FLIP! I hear you ask? It’s a cleverly
devised acronym that stands for Family
Lifestyle Intervention Programme. This
exciting and innovative school-based
programme is funded by NHS Derbyshire
County and has been created to involve
Derbyshire’s children and families in physical
activity and healthy eating.
The three programmes within
FLIP are:
1
2
3
Health4Life - Health4Life helps
increase the self-esteem and confidence
of young people while developing an
interest in healthy lifestyles. This initiative
predominately targets pupils in year 7/8.
FIVE/60 – This initiative stems the rise in
childhood obesity from reception to year
6 children by increasing levels of physical
activity and encouraging children, parents
and teachers to make the necessary
lifestyle changes to become more active.
PACE – This stands for Physically
Active Children Everywhere. As the
name suggests, its aim is to get children
throughout the region’s schools to become
more involved in physical activities.
The way FLIP! works is
simple. It combines three very
successful programmes which are
already being delivered across
Derbyshire’s schools and delivers
them in one neatly bundled
programme.
Flipping great feedback
The programme was excellent and
the after-school club was a great
opportunity for pupils to attend
a non-sporting club and develop
confidence in them. The delivery
of the sessions was outstanding.
Lots of energy and good discipline.
Together, these three programmes have been inspiring
children and families across the county to lead healthier
lifestyles through curriculum based programmes and
after-school activities.

Men’s Health Week 2011: Get a Man Online
The Men’s Health Forum would like to invite you to take part in Men’s Health
Week (13-19 June 2011). This year Men’s Health Week is going all techie.
We’ll be talking about the internet. Why? Because men don’t like going to
the doctors much and don’t take a great deal of interest in their own health.
However, men do love using their computers and mobile phones - and if used
properly - these devices can be an excellent source of information on health.
The aim of Men’s Health Week 2011 is to get more men, including the 9
million adults in the UK who have never used the internet, to do this.
For free downloadable information, please register your interest at:

Helping schools be SunSmart
While some sun is good for us, it’s important to protect children’s delicate
skin from damage as sunburn in childhood increases the risk of skin cancer
in later life. Cancer Research UK’s SunSmart campaign is on hand to help
with a new pack that provides schools with all the resources needed to
develop a tailored sun protection policy. The pack includes a poster,
an assembly plan and lesson plans. Go to http://www.sunsmart.org.uk/
schools/ to register for a free pack.
