Stop the drinks sneaking up on you February will see the launch of a new Change4Life campaign to show how easily drinking too much alcohol can sneak up on you. More than 9 million drinkers in England are potentially putting their health at risk by regularly drinking above the Chief Medical Officer’s guidelines*. Building on the lower drinking messages and drinks swaps included in last autumn’s ‘Get Going Every Day’ campaign for adults, the new campaign aims to support those who are unaware their drinking could be putting their health at risk. *CMO lower-risk guidance is that men should not regularly drink more than 3-4 units of alcohol a day and women should not regularly drink more than 2-3 units a day. Ainsley Harriott is joining forces with Change4Life to show how quick and easy it can be to cook healthy meals at home. The TV chef will be helping to promote the Supermeals campaign and has contributed two of his recipes to a Change4Life cookbook which he will be showing individuals how to make in online videos. “For many of us things are a little different now and it’s become really easy to ignore the kitchen, but good food isn’t boring, it doesn’t take ages to prepare and it doesn’t need to be expensive. Supermeals is all about inspiring people to shop well and get back in the kitchen - and I’m looking forward to getting everyone involved.” Ainsley Harriott We’ve also teamed up with Aldi, Asda and Co-op to create super deals – special offers on healthier foods – throughout January. We’ve got some fantastic ideas for teachers and schools, families and adults to harness the energy and excitement of this summer’s sporting events. Read about all our plans in next month’s newsletter. Supporter of the month If you’re excited about Change4Life’s new year of activity and want to get involved, this month’s supporter of the month, NHS Norfolk, will hopefully inspire you with how they brought the national campaign to life at a local level. On Sunday 25 September, people across England donned their walking shoes to celebrate Walk4Life day – and Norfolk was no exception. Felbrigg Hall in North Norfolk was selected as one of eleven locations around the country to host a televised event. ITV News reporter Luke Farrington led walkers, organised Active Norfolk and the Fit Together health walks group, on either a one or three mile route around the grounds of the historic house. Meanwhile Jackie Squires, also from Fit Together, led a group of walkers through the more urban setting of King’s Lynn town centre. Free pedometers were given to the first 25 people turning up for the two mile walk and King’s Lynn Health Trainers were on hand to talk to people about living a healthier lifestyle. Those wanting to do their own thing could head to www.walk4life.info to plot their own routes or find existing walks. This included Norfolk County Council’s Health, Heritage and Biodiversity Walks, which were uploaded to the site to mark the day. Share your story healthy bites Here’s a round up of other useful info, in bite-size chunks: mywellbeing The British Nutrition Foundation has launched mywellbeing - an online diet and physical activity tool for young people aged 11 to 16 years. It offers a friendly and engaging way for young people to receive feedback on their food and drink choices and level of physical activity. Users can choose to fill in a 1 day or 3 day diary. Results are generated to provide guidance on the balance of the diet by comparing it with the eatwell plate and tips for healthy eating, as well as recommended physical activity levels for their age. There is also opportunity for young people to make a pledge to live well, helping to set realistic goals for the future. A teachers’ guide and diet and activity diaries are also available to download. Find out more Please keep signing up!
