The office provides Pre-award, Post-award and contract negotiation services for faculty, students and the community. In addition, services such as funding opportunity searches, workshops and administrative support for University Compliance Committees are provided. Dr. Harvey Knull Dean of Graduate Studies & Associate VP for Research Many indicators demonstrate research activity is growing rapidly at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The indicators include but are not limited to sponsored projects revenue, expenditures, number of submissions, number of awards and most relevant publications and other presentations of creative & scholarly activity. Compliance statistics relating to the IRB are also on the rise. The University is at an exciting time with its research agenda. Many of the parameters that characterize research have more than doubled in the past decade. This increase is expected to continue over the next decade. The number of faculty is anticipated to grow by 10 or more per year (approximately 4-5% increase per year). This increase, along with increased Center/Institute growth, will contribute to the total research & creative activity. Renee Gonzales, CRA The goal of the Research Office is to facilitate and enhance growth at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Grants & Contracts Administrator Sandra Garcia, SRA Sponsored Programs Coordinator Laura Rosales, CRA Snr. Grants & Contracts Administrator Joanne Palmer Accountant II – Sponsored Programs Liza Mucheru-Wisner System Support Specialist I Geri Fernandez Administrative Assistant AWARDS SPREAD OVER MANY ENTITIES Most Colleges plus Community Outreach, the Library and the TRIO programs office received new awards from numerous sponsors in FY’04. This diversity is most gratifying because there are many strengths and the University is not dependent on a single sponsor. Several entities exceeded $1 million as shown in Table 1. College of Arts & Humanities $ 275,260 College of Education $ 1,484,705 College of Nursing and Health Sciences $ 294,472 Science & Technology Sub-Total $ 6,848,415 Community Outreach $ 476,224 Library $ 79,800 TRIO / Title V $ 1,136,496 TOTAL NEW AWARDS FY 2004 $ 10,595,372 College of Science & Technology -Center for Coastal Studies $ 1,146,920 -Conrad Blucher Institute $ 1,140,222 -Computer & Math Sciences (CAMS) $ 2,481,312 -Physical & Life Sciences (PALS) $ 1,780,583 -Texas Coastal Ocean Observation Network (TCOON) $ 281,378 -South Texas Rural Systemic Initiative (STRSI) $ 18,000 Table 1: Awards By College / Department in Fiscal Year 2004 SPONSORED PROJECTS 2004 ANNUAL REPORT 3 RESEARCH REVENUE GREATER THAN 50% Federal agencies provide the largest amount of funding. Federal monies have consistently accounted for approximately 50% of the total awarded to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. A breakdown of awards by sponsor type is shown in Figure 1. There were two major software awards made to the University. These were non-cash awards totaling nearly $1 million and are included in the totals from “private” sources. The increase in support from “private” sponsors along with an increase in funding from “state” sponsors, results in a decrease in the percent attributable to federal sources. Figure 2: Awards by Type Fiscal Year 2004 Figure 1: Awards by Source Fiscal Year 2004 On average, research makes up 50% of total awards (based on a 5 year average). In FY’04 TAMU-CC exceeded that percentage with a total of 60% of all awards being classified as research. Research monies more than doubled from $2.85 million in FY’03 to $6.4 million in FY’04. Also very important for the University is the revenue attributed to education & service awards. These awards increased from $2.5 million in FY’03 to $4.2 million in FY’04. The increase in awards is anticipated to continue. Figure 2 graphically represents the types of awards received in FY’04. AWARD VALUE CONTINUES TO INCREASE If multi year awards are spread over the entire period of the award, the graphical representation of award revenue is expressed in figure 3. This representation shows FY’04 to be the highest revenue year on record at $13.7 million (this total contains approximately $1 million of non-cash awards that included software and software licensing granted to the University. (These software awards will not be reflected in expenditure data). As of FY‘04 there were already $5million awards for FY’05 and 1 million for FY’06 from prior years. Figure 3: Multi-Year Awards Spread Over Entire Period SPONSORED PROJECTS 2004 ANNUAL REPORT 5 AWARD LONGEVITY There is much good news in that the numbers of awards continue to increase with two of the last three years having more than 100 awards (as shown in Figure 4). This is consistent with there being about 110-125 open accounts four to five years ago and 150-160 currently. The five year average for multi-year awards remains below 20. Figure 4: One Year Awards Vs. Multi-Year Awards AWARDS BY YEAR This figure matches that of Table 1. When multi year awards are not fragmented into future years, the awards result in the graph shown in Figure 5. The saw tooth pattern continues with the good news being that FY’04 shows awards exceeding $10 million. Figure 5: Revenue by Year of Award SUBMISSIONS INCREASE TO 170 IN FY04 The target level of submissions for the University is $30 million. The submission amount for FY’04 continues to meet the targeted amount with $33 million in submissions. The number of submissions at 170 is about a 30-40% increase from the late 1990’s when approximately 120 were submitted. Not only has the number of submissions increased but the success rate of submissions is currently close to 65%. Figures 6 & 7 show total dollar amount submitted and number of proposals submitted. Figure 6: Dollar Amount Submitted Figure 7: Submissions Exceed 170 For The Second Year SPONSORED PROJECTS 2004 ANNUAL REPORT 7 EXPENDITURES Recording “restricted research” expenditures is important because the Texas Excellence Fund (soon to become the Texas Research Development Fund) makes awards to eligible Texas Universities based on the amount of restricted research expenditures. Total expenditures for FY’04 were $13.4 million with “restricted” expenditures totaling $6.8 million. The chart below shows the dollar amount of funding received from external agencies via research proposals that supports students. This type of funding is of great value to the University as it provides students with real life experiences and makes the research possible for Faculty. Table 3: Sponsored Projects Funding for Students RESEARCH ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM The Research Enhancement program is designed to provide small awards that will assist faculty in building a research project that will eventually be submitted to an outside agency for larger amounts of funding. These funds are also commonly used to support faculty to conduct research over the summer months. Fiscal year 2004 was an exceptional year for the Research Enhancement program. There were 44 proposals submitted with 23 resulting in funding. The projects funded for FY ’04-05 are listed below. Last year there were a total of 14 proposals submitted with 7 being funded for a total of $66,000. The following list is comprised of all recipients awarded in FY ’04. There were two rounds of funding due to additional monies being allocated for Research Enhancement. The Research Enhancement committee selected the projects identified below for FY’05 funding: Eugene Billiot $8,300 Development and Use of a GC/MS Ultratrace Screening Method for the Semiquantitative Analysis of Pesticides and Endocrine Disruptors Eugene Bland $9,755 An Investigation of the Impact on Retirement Benefits from Changing the Defined Benefit US Social Security System to the Defined Contribution Australian Superannuation System. Carroll Throughout his career at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Dr. Patrick J. Carroll has demonstrated an exemplary dedication to research. Dr. Carroll believes that trained scholars have an obligation to contribute to knowledge in their fields and provide students with strong teachers by sustaining an active research agenda. Although he was trained as a Mexicanist at the University of Texas at Austin, he has since broadened his research interests to include Mexican American History. Dr. Carroll has written several book reviews, prologues and notices. Dr. Carroll served on the Advisory Board for the KEDT production, Justice for My People: The Dr. Hector P. García Story.” He has participated in some (general presenting) capacity on conference panels ranging from local to international over thirty times. Earlier this year he presented his original research at the Texas A&M University-College Station Symposium “La Lucha: The Struggle for Mexican American Civil Rights” where he was one of only eight distinguished Mexican American Historians selected to present. Dr. Carroll has received substantial financial support from a broad array of sources. He has won College level research grants seven times since 1981, as well as a Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Organized Research Grant in 1980. He earned two American G.I. Forum research grants (1990, 1991). Dr. Carroll also won a “Joint Mellon Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities Research Grant” in summer 1985, and garnered two Pan American Roundtable of Corpus Christi Research grants in 1981 and 2001. Dr. Carroll’s publications (in English and Spanish) include two books: Blacks in Colonial Veracruz: Race, Ethnicity, and Regional Development (Austin: University of Texas Press, 1991and reissued in a second edition in 2001), and In the Wake of Felix Longoria: Bereavement, Culture and Politics in Post-World War II South Texas (Austin: University of Texas Press, 2003). The latter book received the Texas State Historical Association’s prestigious Tullis prize for the best book on Texas history in 2003. His articles cover a large geographical area that extends from southern Mexico to South Texas, and on topics that discuss events dating from the sixteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. Dr. Carroll’s articles address the concept of identity and race by examining the role of Africans in Colonial Mexican History. He is presently working on a book-length study entitled “War, Trade, Economic Nationalism, and Revolution: The Consulados of Cadíz and Veracruz from the Napoleonic Wars through Early Mexican Independence.” By any measure Dr. Pat Carroll has distinguished himself as an outstanding scholar.
