THE ACADEMY SPEAKS 2005
DR. VANESSA FURSE JACKSON
Professor of English
University Excellence in Scholarly/Creative Activity Award Recipient 2004 – 2005
Dr. Vanessa Furse Jackson joined the University in 1993 and has been instrumental in developing a very
successful minor in Creative Writing. With expertise in Victorian and Edwardian literature and creative
writing, Dr. Jackson does it all – she has published both scholarly and creative works with enviable
regularity.
Beginning her academic career by writing and publishing in the more traditional scholarly venues, Dr. Jackson published her first
book, entitled The Poetry of Henry Newbolt: Patriotism Is Not Enough, with ELT Press from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro,
in 1994. The monograph is an in–depth study and critical reassessment of the neglected poet’s work. Situating Newbolt’s poetry
within the context of the manners, mores, and values of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, she examines the poet’s enormous
popularity at the time and argues that, in spite of the recent critical neglect of his work, he “is a minor figure who represents and
illuminates major Victorian values and traditions”. The book provides unique insight into the late Victorian and Edwardian periods in
England. In addition to her scholarly book, Vanessa has also published critical essays on British writers: poet and essayist Alice
Meynell, writer William Morris, and poet Mary Coleridge.
More recently, Dr. Jackson has dedicated much of her time to pursuing her creative writing. In April of 2003 she published a
collection of short fiction, entitled What I Cannot Say to You: Stories, with the University of Missouri Press. The book consists of fourteen
short stories, all revolving around human relationships, specifically issues of friendship and betrayal. After successfully placing and
publishing a short story collection, Dr. Jackson’s next challenge was writing a novel, which she did in summer of 2004. She has
already submitted the 360–page manuscript, entitled The ABC Club, as well as an additional manuscript of short stories, entitled
Small Displacements, which she completed drafting last year. Dr. Jackson has also successfully placed several other short stories, one
of which, “Darrell’s Garage,” gained a nomination for the prestigious national Pushcart Prize (1999). Several of her poems are in print,
two, “Commuter Awake” and “Summer Cries,” were recently reprinted in an anthology, March Hares: The Best Poems from Fine
Madness, 1982–2002.
Dr. Jackson has distinguished herself as a scholar, creative writer, and role model for students and faculty alike. She exemplifies
collegiality and is a friend to all who have met her.
ABOUT THE COVER
4.4 inches of record breaking snow covers the palm lined Island Boulevard on the
west entrance to Texas A&M–Corpus Christi. The last time Corpus Christi had
anywhere near this much snow was Feb. 14, 1895, when 4.3 inches fell in the city.

RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY
OFFICE OF GRADUATE STUDIES AND RESEARCH
The Graduate Studies and Research office provides Pre-award, Post-award and contract negotiation services for faculty, students
and the community. In addition, services such as funding opportunity searches, workshops and administrative support for University
Compliance Committees are provided.
This report provides a summary of several parameters that reflect a rapidly growing sponsored projects agenda at Texas A&M
University–Corpus Christi. The indicators include but are not limited to sponsored projects revenue, expenditures, number of
submissions, number of awards and of great relevance publications, presentations, and other creative & scholarly works.
Compliance statistics relating to the IRB are also on the rise.
The University is at an exciting time with its sponsored projects agenda. Many of the parameters that characterize research have
more than doubled in the past decade. This increase is expected to continue over the next decade. Over any short time interval
such as one year little change is observed but restricted research doubled in five years and TAMU-CC is second in the system (After
TAMU) in research expenditures. The number of proposals have increased about 50% over the last six years and likewise with
revenue. The faculty size is anticipated to grow and the increased Center/Institute and PULSE growth, will contribute to the growing
research & creative activity.

SUBMISSIONS INCREASE TO 182
NUMBER SUBMITTED VS. NUMBER AWARDED
SUBMISSIONS: DOLLAR AMOUNT
Proposals submitted to a wide variety of sponsors
approached $50 million which is the largest total ever
through the TAMU-CC Office (Figure 2). The submissions
through the TAMU-CC Research Foundation have dropped
to zero and TEES has like wise decreased to one or two per
year. Further, TEES submissions are now included in the TAMUCC totals because proposals submitted via TEES must first be
routed through the TAMU-CC office. In the 1998 – 2001
period, both TEES and TAMRF had significant roles in Grants
and Contracts with about 15-20 submissions per year and
approximately half that number in active awards.
FIGURE 1: Number of Proposals Submitted and Number Awarded in FY05
The projects sponsored by external entities at Texas A&M
University continue to increase. Figure 1 shows the number of
submissions exceeded 180 for the first time. The number is
continually increasing as is the number of awards. The award
rate continues to exceed 50%. The number of multi year
awards (awards that extend into the future years) is the
highest to date and exceeded 70 awards in FY 05 which
bodes well for FY 06. Pending refers to those still pending as of
August 31, 2005; next years report will comment to include
that portion of the 37 that were awarded.

AWARDS BY COLLEGE/DEPARTMENT
The awards by college (Table 1) show broad participation. The Centers and Institutes play a major role in grant and contract
funding exceeding $2.6 million. Also, the College of Education has exceeded $2 million for the first time through a variety of funded
programs. The TRIO Title V programs had an exceptional year generating $3.2 million. The new program “PULSE” generated $4.3
million. The numbers in Table 1 include totals of all awards for the year, single and multi year inclusive and compared directly to
figure 3.

EXPENDITURES
FISCAL YEAR 2005 EXPENDITURES
Restricted Research Expenditures play a significant part in funding future research here at TAMU-CC. The Texas State Legislature
returns research dollars to thirty five Universities across Texas using the Texas Research Development Funds as a source of delivery.
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board manages this fund. Awards that were made from these monies are shown on page
8. In fiscal year 2005, total expenditures made from grants/contracts totaled over $13M. These expenditures are broken down
based on the funding requirements. Of the total expenditures, $4.2M was classified as “restricted for research”. There were an
additional $5.1M spent on research (non-restricted) and $4M spent on other activities such as education and service.

RESTRICTED RESEARCH
RESTRICTED RESEARCH PLAYS INTEGRAL PART IN UNIVERSITY FUNDING
To qualify as a restricted research expenditure, the project must be properly classified as research and the source of funds must be
from a restricted fund group. (OMB circular A-110, subpart A)
The classification of “restricted research” has become very important over the last few years. The Coordinating Board provides
research dollars to our university based on the amount of restricted research expenditures that we had in prior years. This funding
was initially called the Texas Excellence Fund (2005) and was renamed Texas Research Development Fund (2006). These funds allow
faculty to initiate research projects that will provide data to be used in proposals to federal agencies in the hopes of generating
additional restricted research awards and thus create a cycle of funding for the university.
Appendix VI shows a listing of projects that were reported to the Coordinating Board as “restricted research” projects.

RESEARCH ENHANCEMENT
AWARDS FROM THE RESEARCH ENHANCEMENT FUND
Internal monies are used to enhance all research on the campus. These monies are most beneficial as they raise the research profile
access the university campus. These funds are usually used to provide faculty with funding to support their research during the
summer. FY 04 was an unusual year in that $315,000 was available versus $110,000 in FY ’05 which was the amount awarded since
prior to 2000. Per university rules, 60% was used for campus wide competition only and awardees are listed below. The remaining
40% is distributed to the colleges according to a formula in the rules to support smaller projects in the colleges. The number of
proposals for the university wide process was 16 resulting in 8 being funded.

COMPLIANCE COMMITTEES
As TAMU-CC receives larger numbers of federal awards, it is critical that compliance with federal regulations is maintained. The
office of Graduate Studies & Research is currently the designated office for assurance of compliance.
INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD (IRB)
The Institutional Review Board has grown in numbers as well
as responsibility. Each year brings more protocols for review.
Although fiscal year 2005 resulted in a decrease in total
number of protocols, the number that required full
committee review almost doubled. This trend is anticipated
to continue as more faculty members are conducting
research on our campus.
