Wheeler Notes
Online at Gordon College : The Distance Education
Committee (DEC) chaired by Dr. Perkowski has been thoughtfully considering the delivery of online courses at Gordon College. The following recommendations have been accepted by Dean
Wheeler:
1.
The goal of the Gordon online program will be to serve successful, highly-motivated students who fall into one of the following categories:
•
Gordon students, who, for reasons of commuting distance, family responsibilities or work responsibilities, are better served by the flexible schedule of an online course.
•
Non-Gordon students who are attracted by the specific online courses available at
Gordon. [For this reason, all Gordon courses will be made available to “Georgiaon-my-line”]
2.
For Spring 2009, we will permit Gordon students to self register for online courses through BannerWeb. To ensure that our target population will be in these courses:
•
Faculty of online courses will contact registered students by email to ensure they understand the self-discipline required in the course.
•
Dr. Perkowski will provide guidance to faculty advisors on identifying students who might profit from the course.
•
Attempts will be made to ensure that online courses are clearly delineated in the schedules that the students see as they are registering.
3. We will not provide reassignment/extra compensation for the second person to develop a given course. Our hope is that the pioneer in the division will share his or her course (as a template) with colleagues to lessen the work impact for them.
The Distance Education Committee continues to work on other questions, such as “how many proctored evaluations must be included in a Gordon course?”; “how to ensure the quality of a new course
Vol. I, No. 3 prior to launching it?”; “how will we evaluate online courses?”, and “to what extent may online courses be hybrid courses with a limited number of classroom meetings required?” As they develop recommendations, those recommendations will be submitted to the appropriate committee of the Gordon
Senate for review.
Because we are in an experimental period in our development of on-line courses, faculty members who wish to develop a new online course should present a short (one-page) proposal for the course to the Dean of the Faculty. Upon approval the course can be developed. However, in view of the uncertainty surrounding the Gordon College budget, we will not approve proposals that involve reassignment/extra compensation for Spring 2009 and Fall 2009.
Business Major on Gordon Campus: Gordon
College has signed a TAG (Transfer Admissions
Guarantee) agreement with Georgia Southwestern
State University in Americus. The agreement encompasses a number of areas, but GSW is particularly interested in promoting their B.B.A. program on our campus. This program is one of a number of local options that our students have available to them in pursuing a baccalaureate business degree. GSW will begin offering courses in the Spring on our campus and online.
Representatives from Georgia Southwestern State
University will be on campus on Wednesday,
September 24 th
promoting the TAG Agreement recently signed with Gordon College as well as the
Bachelor of Business degree GSW will offer to
Gordon graduates through a combination of classes on the Gordon campus and online. Faculty from
GSW will be available to discuss the Bachelor of
Business degree, scheduled to begin in the Spring
2009, semester as well as the general TAG agreement which will secure admission to GSW of Gordon graduates in a number of majors. More information will be made available to students as the date approaches but if you have any questions, contact
Dr. Ric Calhoun in Business and Social Sciences at ricc@gdn.edu

Gordon College Learning Communities : Spring
2009 will see an exciting new wrinkle to Gordon
College’s Learning Community program. Majors in
Pre-Pharmacy and Education will have an opportunity to link a majors course to a distinct communication skills class. Pre-Pharmacy students taking Chemistry 1212 will be able to enroll in a special section of Communication 1100 that will be devoted to issues in Public Speaking directly related to their Chemistry coursework. Students taking
Education 2120 will be able to enroll in a special section of English Composition II with a research focus on issues in Diversity in Education. These
Curricular Learning Communities will offer an opportunity for deeper understanding of communications within their chosen career field and will amplify the relationships between different fields of study within the Core Curriculum. Anyone interested in developing a similar majors-based cluster of courses for an upcoming semester should contact Dr. Edward Whitelock.
