That evening, I went across the square on my way home. There were several small kiosks1 in the square. A woman wanted to sell me a pair of gloves. “Why not buy a pair for your young wife?” she asked. I replied that I did not have a young wife, but I still bought the gloves. At the southwest corner was the subway entrance. Sitting on a bench was a girl selling flowers. In the basket next to her there was only one rose left. She sat there quietly with a sweet smile on her face. I bought the last rose. On the platform I saw a man selling newspapers. I bought an evening newspaper from him. I got on the train and took a seat. Opposite me there was an elderly man, dozing off. When I was about to get off, he woke up. He smiled at me and murmured something in a quiet voice. I walked out of the station and looked up at the night sky. In the sky there was only one star. The star was very bright, and like a lamp it guided my way home. I didn’t have much that evening – a pair of gloves, a rose, a newspaper, a smile and a little bit of starlight. But what more could one want from life?
