New visitor record for Shwedagon Pagoda in 2011
Visitor numbers at Shwedagon Pagoda have increased at a greater rate than the rest of
Myanmar’s tourism industry. A total of 225 381 international tourists visited the Pagoda in
2011, an increase of 28.75% on the 2010 figure of 175 054.
Tourist arrival numbers at Shwedagon Pagoda are increasing year by year. The number for
2010 was up more than 50% on 2009.
The majority of foreign tourists visit the Shwedagon Pagoda at least once during their stay.
The popularity of the Pagoda shows the overall strength of Myanmar’s tourism industry.
Myanmar had almost a 22% increase in tourist arrivals in 2011. The largest group of visitors
came from Thailand, followed by China and Germany.

The Hugenote Tunnel is a road tunnel near Cape Town, South Africa. It extends the N1 national
road through the Du Toitskloof mountain that separates Paarl from Worcester. This provides a
route that is safer, faster (between 15 and 26 minutes) and shorter (by 11 km) than the old Du
Toitskloof Pass travelling over the mountain.
The tunnel has 13 video cameras that can sound alarms for any of the following conditions:
•
stopped vehicles
•
fast and slow-moving traffic
•
traffic queues
•
wrong-way driving.
