Applications
Adam is a 7 year-old boy who has difficulty with communication and social relationships. A
researcher asked his school if Adam could take part in a study about cognitive development. The
school agreed and Adam took part in a number of tasks that involved exposure to materials such
as blocks and plasticine. Unfortunately, Adam had to be withdrawn from the study as he developed
an extreme fear of blocks. The experimenters suggested that this was the result of both the level of
noise and the proximity of other children throughout the experiment, both of which could be stress
triggers. When asked, Adam explained that he was upset that the experimenters kept asking him
the same questions.
(a) Describe psychological evidence and/or theories that could be relevant to the issues raised in
