MARK SCHEME for the October 2008 question paper
CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL DIPLOMA IN OFFICE ADMINISTRATION
5241
Text Processing, maximum mark 100
This mark scheme is published as an aid to teachers and candidates, to indicate the requirements of
the examination. It shows the basis on which Examiners were instructed to award marks. It does not
indicate the details of the discussions that took place at an Examiners’ meeting before marking began.
All Examiners are instructed that alternative correct answers and unexpected approaches in
candidates’ scripts must be given marks that fairly reflect the relevant knowledge and skills
demonstrated.
Mark schemes must be read in conjunction with the question papers and the report on the
examination.
•
CIE will not enter into discussions or correspondence in connection with these mark schemes.
CIE is publishing the mark schemes for the October/November 2008 question papers for most IGCSE,
GCE Advanced Level and Advanced Subsidiary Level syllabuses and some Ordinary Level
syllabuses.

Computing Exhibition
I enclose a copy of the briefing notes for the Computing Exhibition in Barcelona. It would be helpful if
you could forward any amendments you may have to my secretary.
I have received further correspondence from Abdur Rashid this morning. The stand number we have
been allocated is CE64. The organisation of the exhibition has improved this year.
I was pleased with the training session last week. I enclose the results for your staff. All achieved a
satisfactory standard with the exception of Antony Chu who was referred. The next training session
will be held next month. I recommend that Antony repeats the course then.
I wish to remind you that appraisals are due to be carried out next month. Please ensure all staff are
given plenty of notice to enable them to prepare for their reviews. You should draw up a list of dates
and times and let me have this immediately.

EXHIBITION ARRANGEMENTS
A short briefing on the arrangements for our stand at the Costa Brava Hotel, Barcelona is given
below.
Staffing
It is vital to the success of any exhibition to ensure that enough staff are available on the stand at all
times of the day and in particular during the peak times of late morning, mid afternoon and early
evening. A rota has been circulated. Any further staff changes should be passed on to Conrad Goh
as soon as possible. It is essential that no staff take leave during the exhibition. Anyone who has
already booked a holiday will need to contact Samantha Bliss immediately.
Staff are reminded that they should be dressed appropriately. Please ensure you follow the code of
dress as set out in the newsletter which was sent to all staff last month. Shoes should be comfortable
as staff will be standing for most of the day. Short breaks will, of course, be organised and lunch may
be taken in any of the cafes or restaurants available at the Hotel.
If any member of staff has a problem, please contact your team leader in the first instance. Any
matters that cannot be resolved may be referred to the line manager.

Exhibits
The main focus of this year’s exhibition will be our all-in-one photo colour printer. You
should familiarise yourself with this new product. You should be able to demonstrate
its potential to prospective clients. Please ensure you are confident in using all its
functions.
A special discount rate will be on offer to those customers who place an order at the stand. Details
have not yet been finalised. These will be available within the next few days.
The stand area is divided into three sections. The front section displays posters and brochures
showing the complete range of our products. The middle section is devoted to the all-in-one photo
colour printer with a workstation for demonstrations. The third section is devoted to a display of our
aftersales and technical advice services.
Catering and Accommodation Arrangements
At the back of the stand is a private lounge where you may wish to take customers for lunch and
refreshments. There is a serving hatch from the lounge into the kitchen, which has a sink, a
refrigerator, a microwave oven, a coffee machine, a kettle and a work surface for the making and
serving of hot and cold drinks.
Snacks such as biscuits will also be available. We are keeping to our company’s policy of limiting
refreshments to our known customers. This ensures that the lounge is used to discuss business and
does not become a social rest area. Staff must not use this area for their own private use.
A buffet lunch will be delivered to the stand each day at 12.30 pm for approximately 20 people.
You may, as the opportunity arises, invite customers to share in this but please do not exceed this
number.

General Points
Please keep the stand area and private lounge tidy. Try to welcome all visitors whether they appear
to be interested in our products or not. The main aim is to ensure that our reputation as a major
manufacturer is upheld.
Finally in the event of the stocks of free brochures and badges being used up, please take customers’
details so that information can be sent to them when available.

Leaflets and Brochures
Enquiries about holidays in Thailand have increased considerably in the last year. However, I have
just noticed that we are running out of our tour leaflets and brochures for these holidays. Please
arrange for our printing department to produce extra copies of all relevant documentation. It would
also be advisable to check guides to the surrounding border countries as well.
More and more of our clients are choosing to visit at least one of the neighbouring countries. Gregor
has already acquired a good supply of leaflets from the health authorities giving advice to long
distance travellers.
I enclose a copy of my letter to Ms Martina Richmond. I believe she is interested in textiles and crafts.
I think the time is right for us to organise an introductory trip to Thailand with special emphasis on silk
production and local crafts. We could discuss a possible route when we meet next week.

SOUTH EAST ASIA TOURS
THAILAND
The Kingdom of Thailand attracts more visitors than any other country in South East Asia. It has an
irresistible combination of breathtaking natural beauty with inspiring temples and ruins of fabulous
ancient kingdoms.
There are so many inspiring places in the various regions that we highly recommend that you go and
see for yourself.
Bangkok
This is one of Asia’s most cosmopolitan cities. It was created as the capital in
1782 and is a national treasure house. Tourist attractions include glittering
temples and magnificent palaces. You may wish to sit and watch the passing
water traffic or perhaps enjoy a classical dance performance. Numerous airconditioned shopping centres sell a huge variety of the famous Thai crafts and
silks.
The North
The principal northern city is Chiang Mai which is the fine capital of a largely mountainous province.
You may wish to visit the following attractions.
Within the city of Chiang Mai are many lovely temples and the national museum houses a large
collection of works of art produced in the region.

Within easy reach of the city are lovely landscaped gardens containing many kinds of tropical trees
and flowers. Visitors are also welcome at the orchid farms where the many types and colours are
delightful.
Outside the city of Chiang Mai you can see elephants demonstrating their forestry skills. You may
choose to take a ride on one of these magnificent beasts. You may also appreciate the chance to try
river rafting or jungle trekking.
The North East
This region is bordered by Laos and the Mekong River to the north and Cambodia to the south. The
region’s architecture and culture have been influenced by contact with the traditions of these
neighbouring countries. Beautiful silks and ceramics are produced in the area. For visitors who have
the time it is definitely worth exploring the different cultures and customs here.
The South
Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and is often known as the pearl of the south. Its natural resources
make it the wealthiest, busiest, most visited and most popular island and province.
Phuket has white powdery beaches, tranquil broad bays and tropical forests.
When to Go
The monsoons arrive around July each year and last into October, the rainy season. This is followed
by a dry, cool period from November to the middle of January and much higher relative temperatures
from March to June.
By far the best time to visit is from February to March when the weather is kind and the beaches are
at their best.

The peak seasons are August to March. If your main objective is to avoid crowds and to take
advantage of discounted rooms and low season rates, you should consider travelling during the least
crowded months (April to October). On the other hand it is not difficult to leave the crowds behind,
even during peak months, if you simply avoid some of the most popular destinations such as Chiang
Mai and the islands and beaches. This is also the prime time for diving in terms of visibility and
accessibility.
Scuba diving is the country’s most popular water sport and the country boasts some of the most
beautiful dive sites in the world. The water is clear, sea life plentiful, transport and accommodation
readily available and instruction is of a very high standard. Diving is available at all times of the year
although visibility changes according to the season.

Dear Ms Richmond

Following your recent telephone call to my colleague Samira Nasteen, I am pleased to let you have
some information on this amazing country. You will see from the enclosed leaflets that the kingdom
offers a very good variety of choices. There are mountains, beaches, towns and villages, many of
which are busy and full of life. If these details are insufficient for your needs, please visit our website.
Thailand is famous for its beautiful silks and we are planning to offer a specialist trip in our new
programme. There will be opportunities to see silk production and weaving in action. Several other
crafts are practised and the interesting markets offer plenty of excellent quality items to buy at
extremely reasonable prices.
I am confident that you will find a tour to suit you. It is possible to combine tours if you have the time
to spare. We can also help you to plan your itinerary if there are particular areas you would like to
explore.
