MARK SCHEME for the October 2008 question paper
CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL DIPLOMA IN OFFICE ADMINISTRATION
5231
Text Processing, maximum mark 100
This mark scheme is published as an aid to teachers and candidates, to indicate the requirements of
the examination. It shows the basis on which Examiners were instructed to award marks. It does not
indicate the details of the discussions that took place at an Examiners’ meeting before marking began.
All Examiners are instructed that alternative correct answers and unexpected approaches in
candidates’ scripts must be given marks that fairly reflect the relevant knowledge and skills
demonstrated.
Mark schemes must be read in conjunction with the question papers and the report on the
examination.
•
CIE will not enter into discussions or correspondence in connection with these mark schemes.
CIE is publishing the mark schemes for the October/November 2008 question papers for most IGCSE,
GCE Advanced Level and Advanced Subsidiary Level syllabuses and some Ordinary Level
syllabuses.

We will soon be holding the interviews for new sales staff. We have changed the format used in
previous years.
Please confirm with Pierre that all necessary arrangements have been put in hand. Firstly, the room
needs to be booked for the whole day. Coffee should be provided on arrival. We will require hot and
cold drinks throughout the day and a buffet lunch.
Madhu will receive the candidates and will deliver a presentation giving her account of how she
survived weeks of training and is now our most senior salesperson. Questions and answers will form
part of this session.
Please provide support on the day as required.

CHAMBERS OFFICE SERVICES
DESKTOP PUBLISHING SERVICE
Our desktop publishing service has proved to be very popular. As well as newsletters, letterheads
and advertisements, we produce a wide variety of documents that will enhance the effectiveness of
your organisation. We specialise in products for the small business and individuals.
Documents
As well as letterheads, memos and fax cover sheets, we design documents such as wedding
stationery and other personal correspondence.
Newsletters
Weekly or monthly publications are a useful way to keep in touch. A standard outside page can be
designed leaving the inside pages for news, announcements, letters to the editor, etc. You will need
to consider whether each issue should be devoted to a separate topic or to have several shorter
features.
We also provide a plastic wrapping and mailing service.
Scanning of Images
Your photographs and images can be scanned to produce high quality illustrations. Original images
may be enlarged or reduced to any preferred size. Image files can be emailed to you immediately or
returned to you on a disk and you may choose the format such as jpeg or gif files.

printing, we can do it for you.
Completed work can be emailed to you or supplied on disk in many formats. Any
item over $50 can be collected and delivered by our courier in the local area.
Artwork
Images are important in setting the scene and showing something that words cannot describe. A
surprising amount of free clip art or royalty-free photography can be used. Artwork can be provided in
book or brochure form.
We guarantee that our work is of the highest standard and we aim to meet the varied needs of all our
clients.

I have just received the signed form PQ82 from Mrs Z Chan. She expects to move early next month.
Mrs Chan mentioned that she would like us to store a number of general items. These are to be
forwarded in due course to her daughter who is buying a house in Malaysia.
Please ensure you book one of our large vans so that these items can be loaded on the morning of
the move. This should be sufficient to move all Mrs Chan’s property.
I would appreciate it if you would give this matter your immediate attention. Please let me know if
there are any problems.

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL HOUSE MOVE
Planning ahead is essential for a trouble-free move. There are many things that can be organised in
advance to help you accomplish this. The following tips should be useful.
You will no doubt have negotiated with the buyers which fixtures and fittings will remain. These
should be listed and clearly identified before your departure. It is also important to arrange for the gas
and electricity meters to be read on the morning you leave.
It takes time to clear out the garage and to take a shed apart. In addition items stored in the loft need
to be brought down. Planning to undertake these jobs well beforehand will save a last-minute panic.
Packing
If you are packing your own belongings, our surveyor will have estimated the number of boxes
needed. These will be delivered approximately one month before your removal day. The boxes
arrive flat and come in three sizes. Please use the largest for lightweight items and the medium size
boxes for breakables, such as china and glass. The smallest boxes should contain books and other
heavy effects.
The tape supplied is for securing the top and bottom of the boxes. When full, write the contents on
the tape with a permanent marker pen and indicate in which room they are to be placed.
All fragile articles should be wrapped separately, putting crushed paper at the bottom of the box and
between each layer. It is best to place plates upright to prevent any breakages.
Safety
For safety reasons we are unable to carry flammable items such as equipment
that contains petrol or other similar substances.
We believe the above information will help your move to be as free from stress as possible. Please
contact us for further details or visit our website.

Dear Mrs Chan
House Move
Following the visit of my colleague, Jon Hancox, last Monday, we have pleasure in enclosing our
quotation for your house move. Information to help your removal day run smoothly is also enclosed.
As you wish to pack your own possessions, we will provide 50 boxes for this 4 weeks before your
departure. We will also supply you with tape to seal the boxes. This should give you the opportunity
to complete your packing in good time. If you wish, we will bring portable wardrobes on the day for
the easy transfer of your clothes.
Our removal crew will arrive at 7.30 am and they will be at your new address during the afternoon.
Please sign form PQ82 and send this back as soon as possible. The date of your move can then be
