UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL EXAMINATIONS
Cambridge International Diploma Foundation Level
This mark scheme is published as an aid to teachers and candidates, to indicate the requirements of the examination. It shows the basis on which Examiners were instructed to award marks. It does not indicate the details of the discussions that took place at an Examiners’ meeting before marking began.
All Examiners are instructed that alternative correct answers and unexpected approaches in candidates’ scripts must be given marks that fairly reflect the relevant knowledge and skills demonstrated.
Mark schemes must be read in conjunction with the question papers and the report on the examination.
• CIE will not enter into discussions or correspondence in connection with these mark schemes.
CIE is publishing the mark schemes for the October/November 2008 question papers for most IGCSE,
GCE Advanced Level and Advanced Subsidiary Level syllabuses and some Ordinary Level syllabuses.

We have received a letter from Mrs Nana Georgiou. She is interested in the new post of receptionist.
I have asked her to come for an informal visit and I would like you to show her around.
I think it is possible that Mrs Georgiou may raise the subject of job sharing. I am quite happy to consider this. Job sharing is not something you and I have discussed before. I think it would be useful to do so before her visit.

Before starting your course please ensure you have read the instructions on the front of your course folder.
You must sign in and out at Reception. This is very important, as it is our record of who is in the building in case there is an emergency.
Refreshments
We hope you will appreciate that there can be no food or drink allowed in the study areas. There is a small rest room that has a vending machine.
Equipment
We hope to be able to place you at the same workstation each time you attend. All equipment should be ready for you. Please inform us immediately of any faults, however small.
Please make sure you always bring your course folder with you.
Study Times
If you wish to change the times of your study, please ask at Reception or telephone us. We need to ensure we can accommodate you at the time required.

Dear Mrs Georgiou
Thank you for your letter regarding joining our staff.
There has been a huge increase in demand for the training we offer. As a result it is necessary for us to recruit another receptionist. We run a very flexible system which enables trainees to work at their own pace and to attend when it suits them.
I enclose some information about the work that our receptionists do. Hours of work are flexible but you would be expected to work one evening a week.
Please telephone to arrange an informal visit. If you then decide to proceed with your application, a formal interview can be arranged.
Yours sincerely
Niko Mindakis

As you know, Sorensen & Sons is one of our largest clients. The company is expanding rapidly and will soon be requiring approximately 20 new employees. I am anxious to ensure that all job advertisements that we place on their behalf in local and national newspapers are of the highest possible standard.
Please produce some guidelines for all staff who are involved in this activity. I would like to see your first draft by the end of the week at the very latest.

DRAFTING JOB ADVERTISEMENTS
The choice of what to include in an advertisement is very important. The high cost of space and the need to attract attention are just two of the factors to consider. These factors should ensure that you use the smallest number of words. The brief checklist of items given below must be included.
Company Details
Some companies may wish to remain anonymous. This can cause problems. Applicants may be discouraged in case the advertisement has been placed by their current employer. However, the brief details given may tell readers exactly what the firm is and what it does.
Jobs and Duties
The applicant will want to know what the job is. The title will give some idea, but this will not be enough detail.
Key Points
If you believe that candidates who have just left college are required, then say so. This will ensure that only the people targeted will apply.
Other key points may include experience and qualifications but be sure to define these points clearly.
