Question
of the Day
“I am new to the component manufacturing
industry, what are some of the industry’s
‘Gotchas!’?
Thanks for this Question. There are several ‘Gotchas!’
that come immediately to mind. Perhaps the one most
often cited is not having, and sticking with, a well thought-out business model. This would be a
situation where the Sales folks are promising one thing, the truss technicians/designers are doing
their own thing and the manufacturing is just trying to get product out the door as quickly as
possible without regard for design assumptions or quality standards. It is critically important
that everyone on your team understands your desired and intended scope of work. That scope is
the one that is based in ANSI/TPI 1, Chapters 2 & 3, and has been reviewed by your insurance
carrier and attorney, as they too are part of your team. Good communication, paired with great
design and certifiable quality, will keep you away from many trying moments in this business.

Another ‘Gotcha!’ is one that you may feel that you have little control over because it is not
your call to make, but one where you may well make a friend forever for just talking about it.
That one has to do with the “boiler plate specifications” we see on many jobs utilizing metal plate
connected wood trusses. How often do you see the same specifications for the trusses no matter
what the spans or complexity?
Having a conversation with the specifier, be it the architect, engineer or building owner,
about something as simple as truss deflection in an educational-type setting will do wonders for
your perceived integrity. Lots of roof truss specs call for the trusses to have maximum allowable
deflection of L/240 for Live Load and L/180 for Total Load. This may have worked well back in
the day of short span roof rafter construction, but it can wreak havoc when applied to clear span
trusses. Let’s look at a relatively short span of, say, 28’ for residential roof trusses. Assuming we
meet the spec of L/240 and L/180 for LL & TL, the trusses would be expected to deflect vertically
under design live load up to 1.4” (28’ span x 12 inches per foot/240). Really?! Is there any detailing
within the typical construction documents that would allow for that magnitude of deflection
without serious issues with the finishes? What is the ceiling joint going to look like at parallel
partitions? Just imagine the scene when these trusses aren’t for the little 28’ residence but for the
60’ wide commercial space. Now that “allowable” (that is, it meets the specs) Live Load deflection
would be upwards to 3”, with Total Load deflection approaching four inches! You could quote
this job, win the bid, supply it per specification and still end up being hated (if not sued) by the
contractor, architect, engineer and building owner.
There are many aspects of metal plate connected wood truss design and manufacturing that
can fit nicely into a company’s Procedures and/or Quality Control manual. There are other parts
of the business that are just better suited for lunch and learn-type environments, or specifier
group association presentations, where you are not actively trying to sell the recipients anything
other than a better understanding of the products you manufacture or provide. This is the time to
explain the features and benefits of your philosophy or process that will set your company apart
from the rest of your competition. Yes, some of the features may increase your delivered truss
invoice price, but if it saves numerous hours of installation time, eliminates additional material
cost and assures a better end product, isn’t it worth talking about?
The fact is it is relatively easy to eliminate the ‘Gotchas!’ from your processes, but it takes
effort to share your knowledge with the specifiers, installers, inspectors and others involved with
truss applications to complete the loop. The best designed and manufactured trusses that are not
handled and installed properly will not ultimately perform as designed/intended and you will be
forced to defend yourself though having done no wrong. If you want to be included among the
trusted suppliers, and seen as a go-to company, in your market, I suggest that you invest in this
type of non-sales education. My experience says that it will pay off big-time in the long run and
you will make many friends in the process. Thanks for reading, SS.

Good Fun for
Good Causes
Dead Ass Last Team
SBCA Chapters will always hold a special place in my heart and I love an
opportunity to sing their praises. Well, the Truss Manufacturers Association of Texas,
a.k.a. TMAT, has really done something worth praising – it just raised a bucket of
money for charity!
Showing Texas Pride
In the meeting announcement, TMAT President Kevin Walker encouraged
everyone to show their Texas pride and participate in the April golf tournament and
fundraiser. Not only are TMAT golf tournaments a great opportunity to combine
business and pleasure, this one also promised to donate all of its proceeds to the
2016 BCMC Build with Operation Finally Home. This October in Knoxville, TN, a
veteran will be receiving a house, thanks to our industry.
First Place Winners
TMAT’s contribution from this golf tournament: $18,000.
Camaraderie and Community
In addition to the good cause in April, TMAT tournaments are a heck of a lot of
fun! Where else does one team’s members have the honor of receiving the Dead Ass
Last trophies? Sure, winning is nice, but losing isn’t so bad when you’re enjoying
yourself.
If you’re a golfer and you’re passing through Texas in the spring or fall, try to
schedule your trip around a TMAT golf tournament. Even when it’s not for charity,
you’ll have a good meal and some great conversations.
Second Place Finishers
The Generosity of Chapters
This wasn’t the first time TMAT has donated to the BCMC Build, and it won’t be
the last. In fact, I can name 21 Chapters that I know have contributed since it started,
and who knows how many folks have come out to swing a hammer over the years.
Aside from helping your own business by joining a Chapter, please remember
that you’ll be helping your community and your industry too. Whether it’s a few
educational handouts or a big donation of time and money, every effort is worth
taking. And you may have a really good time along the way!

Simultaneous Loading
on Hurricane Ties
By Kelly Sias, P.E, Simpson Strong-Tie
“Structures are connections held together by members” (Hardy Cross)
Take a quick look at a truss design drawing, and you will see a reaction summary that specifies the
downward reaction, uplift and a horizontal reaction (if applicable) at each bearing location. Some people are
tempted to look only at the uplift reaction, go to a catalog or web app, and find the lowest-cost hurricane tie
with a capacity that meets or barely exceeds the uplift reaction.
However, if uplift was the only loading that needed to be resisted by a hurricane tie, why would we
publish all those F1 and F2 allowable loads in our catalog?
Of course, many of you know that those F1 and F2 allowable loads are used to resist the lateral loads
acting on the end and side walls of the building, which are in addition to the uplift forces. Therefore, it is not
adequate to select a hurricane tie based on uplift reactions alone.
Where does one get the lateral loads parallel and perpendicular to the plate which must be resisted by the
truss-to-wall connection? Definitely not from the truss design drawing! Unless otherwise noted, the horizontal
reaction on a truss design should not be confused with a lateral reaction due to the wind acting on the walls
– it is simply a horizontal reaction due to the wind load (or a drag load) being applied to the truss profile. It is
also important to note that any truss-to-wall connection specified on a truss design drawing was most likely
selected based on the uplift reaction alone. There may even be a note that says the connection is for “uplift
only” and does not consider lateral loads. In this case, unless additional consideration is made for the lateral
loads, the use of that connector alone would be inadequate.
Say, for example, that the uplift and lateral/shear load requirements for a truss-to-wall connection are
as follows: Uplift = 795 lb.; Shear (parallel-to-wall) = 185 lb. (F1); Lateral (perp-to-wall) = 135 lb. (F2).
Based on those demand loads, will an H10A work?

An initial look at the H10A’s allowable loads suggests it might be adequate. However, when these loads
are entered into the Connector-Selector, no H10A solution is found.
Why? Because Connector-Selector is evaluating the connector for simultaneous loading in more than one
direction using a traditional linear interaction equation approach as specified in our catalog.
If the shear and lateral forces were to be resisted by another means, such that the H10A only had to resist
the 795 lb. of uplift, then it would be an adequate connector for the job. For example, the F1 load might be
resisted with blocking and RBC clips, and the F2 loads might be resisted with toe-nails that are used to attach
the truss to the wall prior to the installation of the H10A connectors. However, if all three loads need to be
resisted by the same connector, then the H10A is not adequate according to the linear interaction equation.

Confusion is Starting to Confuse Me
Okay, I have finally had it. I have been reading articles for months and finally reached a tipping point.
I cannot sit quietly any longer.
So, I’ll start by saying I have been in this industry a very long time…..and on all sides of it. I have worked
as a carpenter installing trusses, as a designer, as a plant manager, production manager and as a general
manager at numerous plants. I have worked on the hanger side of the industry developing new products for
the component industry and I have worked on the connector plate side of things. I visit customers all over the
country. I get invited to examine operations and provide input. I evaluate pricing and labor costing and provide
input. I have been around the block, been to the circus and seen the monkeys and a lot of other experiences
that are not talked about in polite company; right Jack?
When I read articles from people claiming to know how to fix things with broad generalization and theory, it drives me crazy. This
has been building up for 6 months or more. I read confusing information that contradicts itself from one month to the next. I guess some
of these writers can’t remember what they wrote or when they wrote it.
My first head spinning moment happened a few months ago. I was reading an article by a self-proclaimed industry expert. It was stated
that focusing on productivity doesn’t improve profitability. How does reducing labor costs and increasing output not help profitability? You
can build the same or more product in less time therefore reducing costs and improving profitability. But, in a later article by the same expert
he proclaimed that improved productivity increases sales. Wrong. Improved productivity does not increase sales. Improved productivity
may increase capacity and allow for sales increases, but the two are only joined by capacity. If you increase capacity you MAY increase
sales because you have additional capacity to sell. It is pretty simple. Stuff like this drives me crazy. I have managed plants and I am pretty
sure the rules haven’t changed that much since then.
I went back to read a couple of more things and was appalled when I read that the author is trying to convince people, using broad
generalizations, that vendors will never tell a customer they are making a bad decision or mistake because they are afraid of losing a future
sale. That is the most ridiculous thing I have heard in a while! As suppliers, it is our job and duty to help customers become the best they
can be. If we simply nodded our heads in approval every time a customer asked a question we would at some point lose all credibility and
the customer along the way. Now, I am not saying that there aren’t guys out there pushing equipment on people who don’t need it. There
are. I have written in the past about some of those guys and how that mentality eventually forced those customers out of business during
the recent downturn. My point is that if you are with the right supplier and the people that work with the supplier have the experience built
over years of working in the industry, they can be trusted to maintain the customer’s best interests. They will give you options and explain
the pros and cons of each piece of equipment and offer an opinion of what is best for the customer’s shop based on need and the type of
products to be built.
I am not a paid independent consultant. I work for a supplier and offer the benefit of my experience to every customer. Some take
my advice and some don’t. It is their right as business owners to weigh advice given and act on it in a way they see fit. I’m not saying I
have all the answers and don’t even pretend that I do. My piece of advice when you feel a paid outside consultant is needed would be to
find someone who has been in the business or managed businesses. Find the guy who is going to provide knowledge and advice that fits
your plant, the equipment you have and knows your product mix. In many cases more equipment is not the answer. Sometimes there are
simple adjustments that can be made in production that will lead to improvements that increase capacity without more equipment. A number
of years ago I wrote an article for another publication about automation. Automating for the sake of automation is not the right reason.
Anyway, find the right guy. It may be your supplier’s representative or an outside consultant. Find someone you can trust. Find someone
that isn’t just going to make recommendations based on something they read. Get the guy that will visit your plant and evaluate what you
currently have and will maximize your current production capability before talking about new equipment.
In closing, I am not going to point anyone in a direction. Do your homework and talk to your suppliers. You should use those relationships
to your advantage. Now that I have that off my chest I promise to move on to the more light hearted commentary people are used to hearing
from me. I think next up is how to build a network of component manufacturers that will help each other. Stay tuned!

Did you know that it is possible
to achieve greater than $3 million
in sales on one build table, even
with severe seasonal fluctuations
causing winter sales to be
nonexistent? I define a build table
as one build group of three to four
assemblers building roof trusses.
Did you know an automated fivebladed saw is capable of generating more than $6 million in sales?
Or that most automated linear saws can do more than $3 million in
sales? All of this in one shift, which means no second-shift night crews.
What do you think the labor cost and efficiencies would be for this kind
of sales volume? By the way, these kinds of results are being achieved
in numerous component plants across North America.
So many people agonize over
a labor shortage and yet are only
achieving marginal output per
team, so of course, they need
more employees to produce the
same amount. How many people,
what kind of people and what is
needed to achieve these types of
results consistently are always
the big questions. With all the advice coming from current vendors
and the people within these companies, why isn’t it more common
to achieve this type of output? Many manufacturers are not, and one
should be asking why they are so willing to keep accepting a low level of
productivity when the competitive environment is not getting any better.
Now, some may think I am suggesting that everyone just needs to
invest in automated pucks and other expensive equipment. Sadly, most
could have large gains above their current averages without a costly
investment in automation. Automation does help, but it doesn’t always
make sense to do so because it certainly is not needed in all situations.
Still too many are investing in the very best automated equipment and are
only able to achieve very modest gains. A shiny new table, lasers, and an
automated puck system are not simple cure-alls for achieving large gains.
Far too many companies are investing so much money, and yet the end
results are fumbled on the metaphorical one-yard line. After taking
the big risk of new debt and listening to the vendors and other people,
why does it always seem just out of reach and unachievable by so many
companies? The answer is simple but difficult to overcome. The people
who are failing to achieve the desired results either do not know how or
are simply unwilling to change to achieve far better results. The number
one cause of this ignorance and an unwillingness to change is pride.

Pride is a fickle and terrible emotion. It blinds and binds us from achieving more than what we
are currently doing. It whispers in our ear that what we are doing is good enough, or it screams at us
that we are right, and the others are the ones who are wrong! In fact, ideas and practices should never
be about being right or wrong. Ideas and practices need to be about always willing to evolve to what
creates the best outcome with the changing environment. Pride creates an environment of fear that
prevents people from letting go and embracing more effective methods of processes and management
practices. The greater the fear, the greater the tendency to micro-manage and not allow others to provide
solutions that can easily be tested before fully implementing them. Pride is such a foolish emotion that
the end, it is the cause of many floundering companies.

The size of the company does not matter. Large corporations with multiple locations and small
independent companies are all very susceptible to pride’s terrible hindrance to achieving better results.
Those who had hired my services before investing found that my unbiased advice helped them make
the decision process far clearer and many saved tens of thousands in making a better decision rather
than relying solely on their equipment vendors. Those who hired my services after the new equipment
had found my council gave them far more productivity than what was possible after they failed to
achieve the desired results they had been promised. When your company is finally ready to let go and
embrace proven and practical methods of achieving stellar results, give me a call.

2. To propose an alternative, more efficient method if possible.
Three types of metal connectors were selected for this study –
the H2.5A, H10, and the META20 strap – based on their different
characteristics and ability to represent general classes of connectors.
The connectors were subjected to uni-axial, bi-axial and tri-axial loads
and the normalized capacities of the connectors were plotted along with
different interaction/design surfaces.
These interaction plots were used to visualize and parameterize
the combined load effect on the capacity of the connectors. The three
different interaction plots that were examined were the traditional linear
relationship, a quadratic interaction surface and a cuboid design space.

1. To verify the perceived notion that the capacity of the connector
is reduced when loaded in more than one direction and that the
linear interaction equation is conservative in acknowledging
this combined load effect.
The results? Not only was the use of the linear interaction equation
justified by this study, but a new, more efficient cuboid design surface was
also identified. It provides twice the usable design space of the surface
currently used for tri-axial loading and still provides for a safe design
(and for the bi-axial case, it is even more conservative than the linear
equation). This alternative method is given in our catalog as follows: As
an alternative, certain roof to wall connectors (embedded truss anchors,
seismic and hurricane ties, and twist straps) can be evaluated using
the following: The design load in each direction shall not exceed the
published allowable load in that direction multiplied by 0.75.
Now we can go back to the H10A and re-evaluate it using this
alternative method: Multiple each allowable load by 0.75

•

As it turns out, the H10A does have adequate capacity to resist the

goes to show that the alternative method is definitely worth utilizing,
whenever possible, especially when a connector fails the linear equation.

Forward Thinking.
Respecting the Past.
Ask most people about the lumber industry
and you’ll get a fairly predictable list of
descriptions. What you’re not likely to hear
are terms like:
● technologically advanced,
● sustainable logging,
● small log harvesting,
● green lumber products,
● commitment to healthy communities,
and
● ecologically-minded forest management
When people talk about Vaagen Brothers,
that’s exactly what you’ll hear.
Working in the forests of Washington for
more than 50 years, we’ve learned to take
the best of traditional logging and lumber
milling practices and combine them with
advanced production technologies and
forward-thinking sustainable forest management practices to create a company that’s as
vibrant and growing as the healthy forests
and ecosystems necessary to its success.

Component Opportunities in
High Density Housing
By Joe Kannapell
The growing attraction of owning attached, close-in housing is a winning trend for componentization. Higher densities shift the labor equation
in our favor, both in-plant and out on jobsites. Maximizing the “cube” of structures via open webbed floor and attic room trusses leverages our
strengths. “Walking through” the floor, roof and wall components in a single 3D structural model demonstrates our value to builders and developers.
Housing near town centers appeals to nearly all age groups. Recent
college grads want to emulate their experience living in modern, well located,
amenity-filled university rentals. Millennials living in apartments want to own
their own home, and their best value may be a townhome near public transit.
And finally, even seniors have been trading their suburban homes for less
complicated lifestyles in the cities; closer to restaurants, medical services, and
entertainment. And not stranded far away in the suburbs. Optional elevators
remove the challenge of multi-level living for the aged.
Photo 1: Attached units, such as these, now comprise 50%
of Metro Atlanta housing starts
Affordability compels higher densities – up to 20 townhomes, and even
more condos per acre. This dictates minimal building footprints and maximal
land use; 4-5 story structures with units that may be as narrow as 18 feet.
Garages underneath, decks on top, and balconies throughout, to provide
outdoor living space with little or no yard space. In some locations two-two
story townhouses may be stacked, known as “two over two” townhomes.
Determining the optimal layout of components requires significant design
effort; spanning open floor plans, accommodating large stair and window openings,
and framing a myriad of options. Compounding the task is the maze of mechanicals
from zoned HVAC units, fire places, roof drains, and kitchen and bathroom exhaust
fans. Both the structural and mechanical challenges encourage a consultative,
value-added design approach.
Shoehorning units onto irregular lots maximizes the payback of a project, and
demonstrates the flexibility of components. City planners favor the “massing”
of housing close to transportation and services. They often discourage detached
housing for its inefficient land use. To gain approval of many projects, developers
often must provide a certain number of affordable and special-use units, further Photo 2. Floors, roofs and walls for above project by BMC/Stock

complicating the design task, but also insuring the uniqueness of each infill project,
and mitigating against unqualified bidders.
Fortunately we have “whole structure” design tools to visually collaborate with
all trades and demonstrate that only plated truss components can take maximum
advantage of space, time, and economic constraints. And the larger scale of infill
projects provides a steadier flow of production work, in perhaps a less competitive
environment.

Is there a reduction for plating
in a previously plated area?
When a connector has been installed on a joint and it is determined the plate does not meet the
requirements of the design standard, then the truss designer has to make a decision. The connection
can be repaired by removing the plate, or there may be a way to facilitate the repair leaving the plate
in place, or the connection could be adequate with further evaluation leaving the joint “acceptable
as is” with no repair necessary. In the situation where the plate has to be removed, an important
aspect of the repair should be, “If I am removing a plate and replacing it with another plate, how
does the first plate tooth impact affect the repair?”
Installing a connector into the lumber on its own damages the lumber as the plate is pressed into
the lumber. Removing this plate creates an area where new plate embedment is considered 50%
effective. In other words, one would need twice the tooth count to equal the original requirement
assuming no other defects are present.
In the example pictured, 75% of the new plate area (shown in red) will have had tooth embedment
from the removed plate. The blue hashed area is where a 50% reduction would be required.
In this case, merely replacing the connector with another 30 square inch connector would
not be adequate. An 8 x 8 plate would be necessary to ensure the tooth count necessary per joint.

Primer for Wall Panels
Part Two
By: Jay Halteman
President at Wood Truss Systems, Inc.
In the first part of the Primer for Wall Panels, we discussed the fundamentals of wall panel production and
how they may figure into your wood component business. In summary, we asked the reader to remember that wall
panels were built for decades with little more than a blueprint, carpenter’s square, a hand saw, and a “can do”
attitude. In closing part one, we stressed that before you invest in wall panel production you should consider some
of our basic criteria and ground rules:
•
Rule #1: Your most likely prospect for manufactured wall panels is the same person/company that is directly responsible for framing
labor. In other words, the person who signs the P.O. for wall panels needs to be the same person that “writes” the check for framing labor,
as they are the one who benefits directly from field-labor savings.
•
Rule #2: From our experience we believe that wall panel equipment is easy to over-invest in.
•
Rule #3: All you must have to build wall panels is a flat surface such as a floor deck on a job site (aside from a saw, lumber, and nails of
course).
•
Rule #4: Equipment purchases should be based on matters of productivity and quality. Let your combined experience be your guide as
to what is truly sensible.
•
Rule #5: Your investment in equipment is largely determined by what your daily or weekly linear feet of wall production objectives are
today and over the next 3 to 5 years.
•
Rule #6: The very best equipment for your specific needs can be some combination of new, used, and even “home” made.
As promised, here is Part Two of the Primer for Wall Panels with the answer to the question; “What are the fundamental elements of equipment
necessary to build wall panels?”
• Product Design: Of course manufacturing any building component begins with accurate design in your shop. The plant can only build what
is designed so it is critical that the designs match the intent of the construction documents provided by the building contractor or architect. It is
also critical that the panels are designed to fall within the limits of the plant’s capabilities. For example, if you have a framing table that allows
for up to ten foot high walls, a 12 foot wall will need to be built elsewhere or field-framed.
Wall panel layout is generally done using the following methods:
Manual design of panels: For years people have hand drawn wall panels. The most efficient way to manually design wall panels is to mark
up the blueprints based on the preferred panel lengths, then draw a separate bottom plate drawing showing the stud and opening placements with
both heights and horizontal dimensions. For a house or two a week, this may be fine. The drawback is using a blueprint that has a dimensional
error. Your wall panels would be inaccurate if you only use the graphics without double-checking the written dimensions.
Primer for Wall Panels Part 2 continues on page 32

from independent sources. Some offer a one-time
purchase price and others charge a monthly fee.
A big advantage of design software is its ability
to import CAD drawings from truss design
layouts, architects, and builders to create accurate
dimensioning and cutting. The ability to copy, flip,
and paste data makes repetitive designs easier with
software than a manual layout (design) approach.
* (Keep in mind that wall software from your
nail-plate supplier generally comes at an additional fee. Why? Well, the “currency” that pays for design
software is their proprietary nail or connector plate which are rarely used in wall panel production. In a few
words, you must pay to play.)
So you believe you have a good design to send to your builders, now what? Well here are the fundamental
areas that will likely require an equipment investment:
• Cutting and Marking – This is where the physical accuracy of your finished wall panels is established;
it is essential that you are accurately cutting plate material and correctly marking stud, sub-component, and
opening locations for the rest of your manufacturing process to be accurate. In addition you will be cutting all
of the other dimensional lumber elements of a wall panel (blocking, etc.), and keep in mind that better than
95% of your cutting will be 90°, rightangle cuts. Solutions in new equipment will run between $10,000 and
$55,000 for manual/semi automatic cutting and from $125,000 to $300,000 for full automation.
• Sub-Component Assembly – These elements include stringers, trimmers, ladder panels, corners,
T’s, and the like to be used in wall frame and rough opening assembly. Again, in more than 95% of these
assemblies you will be joining dimensional lumber at 90° angles. Solutions run between $100 for a wood
bench to $25,000+ for systems with pneumatic clamping and squaring nailers.
• Rough Opening Assembly – These elements include window and door (interior and exterior) openings
that are pre-assembled and “dropped” into to the wall frame during the framing process. Rough openings
generally utilize some subcomponents such as headers and trimmers for doorframes. They are sometimes
referred to as sub-component openings. Generally built “just in time” on the framer, squaring-table, or on
a manual framing surface.
• Framing – This is where both exterior and interior walls are built with a combination of top and bottom
plates, studs, sub-components, and rough openings. At this point in the assembly process square, tight joints
are essential prior to the joining of the members by fasteners (nails). For interior walls this is typically the
end of the line. Solutions run the spectrum from a home made framing table ($500), to OEM built electric/
pneumatic tables $35,000+, to fully automated machines at $200,000+.
• Sheathing - Here is where exterior walls that require sheathing are finished. Sheathing material in the
form of various materials (OSB “plywood”, foam-core board, Styrofoam™, DensGlass®, etc.) is applied to
the completed wall frame at this location. The sheathing material is either pre-cut or applied in sheets then
routed for application around openings, and usually applied with nails or staples at code-specified intervals.
The sheathing process may be accomplished at a single location or in two stages: squaring, applying, and
“tacking” the sheathing followed by squaring and fully fastening the sheathing to the elements of the frame.
Either way keep in mind this process is always the primary “bottle-neck” or time-consuming task in a
manufactured wall panel operation. OEM solutions may run from $75,000 to $125,000+, but in any regard
this is one area where you should not “wing it”. An investment in equipment to be accurate and productive
is definitely warranted.
• Stacking – This is where your product is prepared for shipment and orderly use by the field framing
crew. Neat, organized, secure bundles are the “name of the game” and there are several ways to accomplish
this, largely dependent on the physical layout of your facility. Stacking order is generally a function of your
design software as most of the current wall software has a stacking function that generally determines the
“build” order. Sometimes customers will ask for a specific stacking order. Solutions may include a panel lift
(think ice tongs), hoist (electric or pneumatic), and a frame to support the lifting process.

• Delivery – There are several ways for wall panels to be delivered
to and unloaded at the job-site. The “right” way will be determined by
many factors largely influenced by the expectations of your consumer.
In many locations the combination of an all-terrain forklift and a flatbed
trailer seems to work best. In other areas, panels must be delivered and
set with a crane on site for you to be competitive in the marketplace.

• Personnel – As mentioned you need solid design software which
is available from a variety of suppliers. We believe it is also important
that you find some design and production personnel that are experienced
in framing wood structures to help you deliver a “user-friendly” product
to the field framing crews. Regardless of your current business nature
there in no substitute for staff with wood framing experience, and a firsthand knowledge of framing practices and preferences in you market. It
is crucial that you do your “homework” in this area.
Our objective in this two-part series was to help you determine
what strategy you should have relative to the growing market segment
that manufactured wall panels represent. If your current status includes
building or planning to build wall panels, we hope that we have helped
you to identify the fundamental elements of wall panel production. There
would of course be more to discuss to plan a manufacturing operation,
(such as building size and material flow!) but that is best left to individual
consultation with knowledgeable, SBCA affiliated industry professionals.
Thanks!

Applications make compliance with building codes quick
and seamless
Modern technology helps to simplify our daily lives in many ways with the touch
of a button—and now, today’s technology plays an important role in the way the wood
construction industry is improving speed, efficiency and safety, and even compliance with
the latest building codes.
There is no mystery as to why the public relies on modern building codes to ensure safety and protection
against potential hazards caused by fire, high wind, seismic, or snow events. According to the International
Code Council (ICC), regulation of building construction can be traced back more than 4,000 years in recorded
history and, over time, has become an increasingly efficient way to avoid unfortunate consequences of
building-construction failures.
That said, determining building code compliance can often be a tedious and time-intensive task for
contractors, builders, and code officials. To help make the process more user-friendly, the American Wood
Council (AWC) has developed three free web-, mobile- and tablet-based applications to streamline the process
of ensuring new and existing buildings comply with the latest building codes. Each application – including
the Span Calculator, Connection Calculator, and Energy UA Calculator – features a seamless interface with
drop down menus offering a wide variety of specifications to choose from. All are available for browsers, as
well as iOS and Android devices.
The Span Calculator: The Maximum Span Calculator for Wood Joists and Rafters performs calculations
for all species and grades of commercially available softwood and hardwood lumber as found in the 2012
National Design Specification® (NDS®) Supplement. Common uniform loading conditions are available
and adjustment factors for wet service conditions even allow calculation of deck joists. The "span options"
calculator allows selection of multiple species and grades for comparison purposes.
The Connection Calculator: The Connection Calculator provides users with an app-based approach
to calculating capacities for single bolts, nails, lag screws, and wood screws per the 2005 NDS for Wood
Construction. It offers a convenient way to determine both lateral and withdrawal connection values and
includes adjustment factors for temperature, wet service, varying load durations, and end grain. Additionally,
single and double shear capacities can be determined, as well as wood-to-wood, wood-to-concrete, and woodto-steel connections, using a variety of solid sawn lumber and glulam species and wood structural panels. For
connections loaded in shear, the calculator presents results for each of the NDS-prescribed yield modes, and
calls out the controlling result.
The Energy UA Calculator: The Energy UA Calculator computes an opaque wall or fenestration
U-factor based on the Total UA alternative compliance method permitted by the International Code Council’s
2012 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) or International Residential Code (IRC). The U-factor
indicates the rate of heat loss of a wall assembly. The lower the U-factor, the greater a wall's resistance to
heat flow and the better its ability to control heat loss. This new Energy UA Calculator is consistent with
AWC’s Design for Code Acceptance (DCA) 7, “Meeting Residential Energy Requirements with Wood-Frame
Construction.” DCA 7 and the accompanying app provide ways to economically meet the residential energy
requirements of the 2012 IECC. The app also gives insulation requirements needed in various wood wall
assemblies to achieve the specified opaque wall U-factor.
Now more than ever, complying with the latest building codes is crucial for ensuring safety, health,
resiliency and energy efficiency in wood construction. According to the Environmental and Energy Study
Institute, building codes can now offer enhanced protection against the threats of natural disasters to make
communities more resilient, sustainable, and livable for future generations. Modern codes provide the industry
with a baseline for estimating and managing risk when it comes to investing in long-term measures to achieve
environmental goals that can impact short-term profits.
AWC's Building Codes and Standards team works closely with model, state, and local building code
organizations, as well as with many standards developing groups, to gain the broadest appropriate acceptance
of wood products in the marketplace. AWC’s easy-to-use applications help users ensure code compliance from
the convenience of their smartphone or tablet – taking full advantage of the possibilities enabled through
today’s technology.

Softwood Framing Lumber Market Forecast & Trading Strategy
Matt Layman, Publisher
Week #17
April 27, 2016
Another Dimension
Thought Provoking & Inspirational
Lumber Market Summary
Lumber Market In Swirling Winds
Avoid Futures "FOGGLES"
April and May are peak demand months for our
lumber industry. Those two months are also peak for
production. The historical trends suggest that prices will
weaken in May.
Part of my job is to look for abnormalities. One such
current abnormality is the acknowledgment of
discounted trading levels of Canadian SPF against US
species in construction grade framing lumber. Buyers
are moving towards SPF for mid spring fill ins.
At midweek we see Canadian sales heating up while
stateside mill sales are struggling just to stay warm. As
April ends, buyers are searching for lower prices while
inventories easily liquidate. This creates a rub. Having
adequate inventory for this time of year is imperative.
Therefore, no one is willing to run the risk of missing an
order from being out of stock. On the other hand
margins continue to be very thin and having excessive
inventory is not it desirable.
This leaves our lumber market in swirling winds...no
clear trend, strong demand, ample supply...all against
the backdrop of uncertain, lethargic housing.
In these conditions I resort to historical perspectives
to project the most likely path for the future. That is the
Forecasted Decision Points projection below. The FDP
suggests the lumber composite working lower over the
coming six weeks.
Lately we have been decoding and simplifying lumber
futures. Futures is the only thing in our lumber business
that changes price everyday. As previously discussed,
lumber futures are influenced primarily by hedge funds not
lumber traders. Lumber futures does not impact all prices
in our business on a daily basis. It has no impact on OSB.
It has no impact on southern yellow pine lumber. It has no
impact on Green Doug Fir lumber. It only impacts western
Dry Fir to the extent that it impacts Canadian SPF. It
primarily impacts only 2x4#2 Canadian SPF. On a daily
basis lumber futures only impacts 2x4 Canadian SPF when
prices rise, as we have seen this week. The cash market
lags, even fails to respond when futures declines. However,
rising futures prices can pull Canadian SPF 2x4's higher, day
by day. Why? Because Canadian lumber producers can sell
their production into "the board" for delivery.
Canadian SPF 2x4#2 began the week looking for orders
at $280 fob mill. By Wednesday's close, hedge funds had
squeezed futures shorts, rallying May lumber up to $296.
This allowed mills to scoot higher without sales to justify the
increase.
So why did futures rally? It was all technical. After an
$88 rally, the 50% pullback was to $274. The 50% rally
back up that $44 down leg was to $296. Is that all there is?
Who knows, but I'm a numbers guy...and I suspect so.
Be very careful of foggy markets caused by futures.
Looking Forward...Matt Layman, Publisher

ALPINE’S DAVID BRAKEMAN
NAMED TO RURAL BUILDER HALL OF FAME
VERNON HILLS, Ill., April 5, 2016 – David Brakeman, longtime
engineering director at Alpine, a leading provider of building component
software, metal connector products and equipment for component
manufacturers, has been named to the Rural Builder Hall of Fame. This
prestigious award honors individuals who have helped to advance the
post-frame construction industry. It was presented by Sharon Thatcher,
editor of Rural Builder and Frame Building News magazines, during
a special ceremony at the 2016 Frame Building Expo in Indianapolis,
Indiana, on March 10.
In addition to his responsibilities at Alpine, where he oversees all
work in wood truss design, research, testing and standards development,
Brakeman is active in the Truss Plate Institute, the national organization
that writes the design standards for wood truss construction. He also
has served as a member of the Technology and Research Committee
for the National Frame Building Association, authoring or coauthoring
numerous articles on trusses in post-frame construction. Based in
Alpine’s office in Maryland Heights, Missouri, Brakeman was an adjunct
professor of civil engineering for more than 20 years at Washington
University, St. Louis, Missouri, where he taught a course on designing
timber structures.
“David Brakeman is an excellent example of how the industry
continues to advance post-frame construction through the unselfish
sharing of information and expertise,” said Thatcher. “It is particularly
significant that he was selected for this honor by his peers. While Rural
Builder magazine monitors the system, members of the Hall of Fame,
with roots dating back to 1982 and now numbering more than 100
members, actually nominate and vote for new inductees. They don’t
take their responsibilities lightly, and now Dave joins this elite group.”
After earning his B.S. degree in civil/structural engineering from
Washington University and a B.A. degree in physics from Lawrence
University, Appleton, Wisconsin, Brakeman joined Lumbermate
Company in 1978. He held a variety of key engineering positions until
he moved to Alpine in 1989 with its acquisition of Lumbermate.
Brakeman is one of only three persons to lead Alpine’s engineering
organization during its 50 years, following in the footsteps of company
cofounder William McAlpine and Charles Hoover, Jr. All three
individuals pioneered many truss design and engineering innovations
while shaping Alpine’s strong focus on the engineering services and
principles for which it is renowned.
Recognized for its engineering excellence, productivity-enhancing
software and equipment solutions, and the industry’s best service, Alpine
is a leading provider of building component software, metal connector
products and equipment to component manufacturers. Since 1966, the
company has partnered closely with customers to enhance their business
and productivity. Alpine is also a leader in delivering software solutions
that increase homebuilder productivity and profitability. The company
is a division of Illinois Tool Works Inc., a Fortune 200 global multiindustrial manufacturing leader with revenues totaling $13.4 billion in
2015. For additional information, visit alpineitw.com.

As a manufacturer of engineered structural
connectors, prefabricated shear wall panels and
other fastening systems, Simpson Strong-Tie
products are used to attach the roof, walls, floor
and foundation together to reinforce the structural
frame of a home. Although most homeowners
never see these products because they're hidden
inside the walls, they actually play an important
role in making sure a house stays together,
particularly in areas subject to high winds,
tornados, hurricanes and earthquakes.
"Our employees are very proud to support Habitat and to work
alongside people who truly want to build and live in safe, strong,
affordable homes. As a company, we are focused on creating structural
products that help people build these homes and buildings, so we are
honored to be a part of Habitat’s work," said Karen Colonias, president
and CEO of Simpson Strong-Tie.
Habitat Strong
In 2016, Habitat for Humanity launched a new program, Habitat
Strong, to help its affiliates build more resilient and stronger homes
using criteria established by the IBHS® (Institute for Business &
Home Safety). Simpson Strong-Tie is proud to be a major sponsor of
the program.
Habitat affiliates throughout the country are being invited to
participate in training sessions for building to IBHS FORTIFIED
Home™ standards. The Habitat Strong program was developed
specifically for the Habitat model to be affordable and volunteer-friendly,
while offering benefits to partner families that will last for years to come.
“We are very enthusiastic about the new Habitat Strong program

The Last Word...
The Future of Component Design…
The evidence is all around us that the “art” of component design continues to advance. This I clearly
witnessed last week in a Northeast Atlanta suburb. Down the road from a jobsite I visited over 40 years ago,
a highly customized project is rising (see photos on page 20). In the same amount of time that we designed
just the trusses in 1973, Jim Dooley’s crew at BMC/Stock designed the entire structure - floors, roofs and
walls. The truss design was really a small part of their job.
Joe Kannapell - Senior VP
MiTek Industries, Inc.
www.mii.com
Several hundred miles North in Metro DC, Scott Austin’s team at Structural LLC is also taking component design to a new level on highly
complex, $800,000 town house units. Scott insists that one person control the structural model for a project, even if that individual may depend on
the specialized expertise of other team members. This enables the deepest understanding of these intricate projects and insures the best coordination
of all 3 component systems with mechanical trades.
These are just two of the increasing number of component manufacturers who are stretching the capabilities of their designers to understand the
whole structure. This understanding has dramatically elevated the component design function, especially for turn-key suppliers. A skilled designer
can now specify all of the building materials in the 3D model, including hundreds of SKUs. What a highly valued role the skilled individual can
now assume in the building process; a quantum leap from the humble duties of the truss designer of 40 years ago.
