Engineering Yogyakarta State University Andre Prasetya Alumnae of Automotive Technical Education Faculty of Engineering Yogyakarta State University Abstract: This article is based on a final-duty study conducted by a student and his consultant lecturer. The purpose of the research was to identify a computer-based learning media condition, development process, proper assessment about Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT). The other objective of this study was to determine effect of the CVT’s learning media application in the class toward student’s learning interest. This research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design by using Borg and Gall’s procedural development model. Respondents of this study were eleventh-class students of Automotive Program at Vocational High School (SMK) in Cilacap Regency of Central Java Province. Field trials of the media were conducted three times at SMK Dr. Soetomo, at SMK Budi Oetomo, and at SMK Negeri 2 Cilacap with 36 students of each school. The student’s response toward the learning media appropriateness in the media aspect and the learning material aspect was collected by closedquestionaire. In the media aspect, indicators of feasibility consist of: (1) visual interpretation, (2) visual design, (3) graphics as a visual media, and (4) procedure of media development, and indicators of feasibility in the learning material aspect were: (1) relevance between material and syllabus, and (2) self-learning. Effectiveness of the learning media was assessed by quasiexperiment with non-equivalent control group design. The experiment was to determine effect of the computer-based learning media utility toward student’s learning interest. By purposive sampling, 72 students was elected and was classified into two group as experimental group and as control group. Data of learning interest were collected by questionaire in Likert type. Instrument validity of student’s learning interest was determined by experts judgement and by product moment correlation. Reliability of the instrument was tested by Alpha Cronbach formula. The collected data of the learning media appropriateness was analyzed by descriptive statistics in percentage. Data of the student’s learning interest were analyzed by descriptive statistics and by t-test. The result of this study shows that based on media aspect, learning media of CVT at SMK is in proper condition with percentage value of 86.96%. Meanwhile, based on the learning material aspect, the learning media of CVT at SMK is not proper condition with percentage value of 14.28%. The developing of computer-based learning media of CVT was done by Macromedia Flash. It is shown by the result of t-test of tobserve is higher than ttable 5% (2.1028>1.9996). Keywords: computer-based learning media, continuous variable transmission (CVT), learning interest. Introduction Background Teaching-learning process was discussed by some experts in education. Teaching-learning is process of a set activity of a teacher and students based on interactive-relationship in education (Asep Jihad, 2008:12). Oemar Hamalik (2003: 54) stated that teaching-learning was a structured 682 SEMINAR INTERNASIONAL Reformulasi Paradigma Pendidikan Teknologi dan Kejuruan combination of humanity, facility, and procedure that interacted one to another to achieve learning objectives. Based on two statements above, interaction between teacher and students need a facility to achieve the learning objectives. The facility in teaching-learning process is learning media. Two urgent-elements in learning process are learning method and media (Azhar Arsyad, 2008), and there are some reasons that the learning media can enhances student’s learning process quality (Nana Sudjana, 2007). By using learning media, the teaching-learning process is more attractive, the meaning of learning material is more clearly, and learning method is more variative. There are some kinds of learning media in the teaching-learning activity. Each of the media has special capability in the explanation of teaching materials in the activity and effect of the media on student’s understanding was different. Computer-based learning media have been developed by computer technology application in education. The learning media can combine some kinds of media for learning objective. Kinds of media consist of texts, pictures, audio, video, graphics, and simulation. Based on an observation conducted at SMK Dr. Sutomo in Cilacap Regency, teachinglearning about CVT on Motorcycle subject in academic year 2009/2010 has been facilitated by some learning media. Learning media used in the teaching-learning activity was white board, charts, and power point. There are no computer-based learning media in the CVT’s teachinglearning in the school. Computer-based learning media were assumed as a appropriate media in the CVT’s teaching-learning because process in the CVT can be illustrated more clearly. The problem is how to develop the learning media as a proper facility. This problem of discrepancy of media utility in the teaching-learning was to be solved by research. Solution of this problem was be done by Research and Development approach. There are four research problem statements as follows: (1) How is current condition of learning media of CVT at SMK in Cilacap Regency?, (2) How is the way to develop the learning media of CVT at SMK in Cilacap Regency?, (3) Is developed learning media of CVT at SMK proper condition as a media?, and (4) What is effect of computer-based learning media application in teaching-learning processs towards student’s learning interest at SMK in Cilacap? The purpose of the research was to identify a computer-based learning media condition, development process, proper assessment about Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT). The other objective of this study was to determine effect of the CVT’s learning media application in the class toward student’s learning interest. Theoretically, result of this research can be used by other researcher for developing their researchs on learning media. Practically, this result can be used by teachers to prepare Macromedia Flash software as a learning media of CVT at SMK in Cilacap Regency. This result of this research is expected able to enhance student’s learning interest about CVT by using the software. Learning Media Many of education experts claimed that learning media were a mediator or medium, a communicator between information source and receiver (Azhar Arsyad, 2010). The media consists of all human, material, or event that building a condition to achieve student’s knowledges, skills, and attitudes. Teachers, books, and schools environment were assumed as media. Specially, the learning media in teaching-learning process means as graphical, photograps, or electronics equipment to receive, to process, and to arrange verbal information. Oemar Hamalik (in Azhar Arsyad, 2010) stated that learning media can create the new curiousity and interest, motivation, and other psychological effect on students. 683 SEMINAR INTERNASIONAL Reformulasi Paradigma Pendidikan Teknologi dan Kejuruan Based on experts opinions before, it is concluded that some learning media: (1) can explain message more clear and enhance learning process and output, (2) can direct student’s attenttion and can create the motivation, (3) can improve space, and time limitations, and (4) can give equal experiences to students. Computer-based learning media is a way to explain learning material by using microprocessor-based source. Learning materials in the media was kept in digital form, not in the visual printed form. Various computer-based technology application in teaching-learning are called Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI). Main characteristics of computer-assisted technology: (1) can be used in the random, squencial, and linear way, (2) can be used as student’s interest, (3) can present ideas in the student’s experience context, (4) can apply cognitive and constructivism principles in the teaching-learning, (5) can arrange teaching-learning into cognive scope in order to master the material, (6) can involve student’s interactivity, and (7) can integrate words and visual from varous sources. Macromedia Flash is a specially designed program by Adobe and standard authorizing tool professional application for making animation to develop interactive and dynamics website. The macromedia was designed to make reliable two-dimensions animation for give animation effect on website. Videos and films are set of picture frames played quickly. Each of frame is a recorded movement. Video is an audio visual that can be used to present learning material. Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) system is an automatics-transmission system that can produce a different torque and acceleration in each centrifugal energy created by coupling with continuous speed and torque variable movement in an engine revolution (Subandrio (2009). Automatic transmission system is applied in motorcycle where energy from crankshaft was transmitted to real wheels by V-belt of two pulleys. Advantages of CVT system are: (1) easy in operation, (2) more convenient in use, (3) easy in care, and (4) smooth in acceleration. Disadvantages of this system is too much fuel consumption, because the speed of CVT higher than of manually transmission system. There are two pulleys in the automatic transmission, drive pulley or primary pulley and driven pulley or secondary pulley. Drive pulley consist of six components, that are: (1) cooling fan and the pulley body, (2) movable drive face, (3) bushing, (4) roller, (5) backing plate, and (6) Vbelt. Driven pulley consist of six components, that is: (1) secondary outer-pulley wall, (2) return spring, (3) coupling lining and housing, (4) secondary inner-pulley wall, (5) torsion cam, and (6) reduction gear. Learning Interest Interest is an acceptance toward relationship between self-individual and his environment. Getting stronger of the relationship is getting stronger of the interest. Interest is not gift from birth, but the interest is obtained later. Interest to something that is learned, can affect next study and finally the interest can affect new interests. Interest towards something is a learning outcomes and the interest is as supporting next study. Interest will cause subsequent changes in oneself. It correlated with feeling and thinking that encourage to act or to do something in achieving an spesific purpose. By Ahmadi (1991: 36), feeling is a statement of the soul which subjective in feeling happy and unhappy. Winkel (1984: 30) stated that feeling is psychic activity in which a subject to live values of an object. It concluded 684 SEMINAR INTERNASIONAL Reformulasi Paradigma Pendidikan Teknologi dan Kejuruan that interest is strong level of excitement characterized by attention, feeling of pleasure, and activities of a person in doing an activity that is chosen because the activity is fun and gives the value or satisfaction for him. Thus, learning interest can be defined as inclination in engage in learning activities. If the activity is assosiated with learning, learning interest is a motivational tool or reason for students to perform learning activity. Another Relevant Research Results Some another research results supported this research about development of computer-based learning media about Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) on Motorcycle Subject at Vocational High School (SMK) in Cilacap Regency. Three of the research results was described below. Weakness of the media is still lacking some appropriate text size. Judging from the materials aspects, the media considered less appropriate for use in the learning process, 687 SEMINAR INTERNASIONAL Reformulasi Paradigma Pendidikan Teknologi dan Kejuruan because there is material that does not comply with basic competence in the syllabus. The material is still too short and not yet able to provide detailed information about CVT. Proces of Making Computer-based Learning Media about CVT on the Motorcycle subject at SMK in Cilacap Regency The process of developing computer-based learning media about CVT on Motorcycle Subject using the procedural development model refers to Borg and Gall. Macromedia Flash is the ideal medium of learning, because: (1) there are elements of drawing, (2) there is animation motion, (3) can explain the matter in detail, especially the material practices in detail, and (4) not easily worn that can be used for along time. The process of making the learning media is done into two stages as stage design and stage of program development. Design stage includes: (1) identification of goals, (2) instructional analysis and user needs, (3) to formulate the basic competencies, (4) make a story board, and (5) make the design of instructional media. Stages of program development include: (1) design flow chart, (2) interface design, and (3) design implementation. After two stages, computer-based learning media finalization of the CVT on the lessons Motorcycle was produced. Result of the testing the validity of computer-based learning media about the CVT on the lesson motorcycle at SMK in Cilacap Regency. Group Pretest Posttest Enhancement Control 85.50 87.56 2.06 Exsperiment 86.77 90.97 4.20 After the test requirement of parametric analysis is done, then the data was tested by t-test. Test result show that there is a significant difference between student’s learning interest in posttest score in both group. By level of sifnificance 5% and degree of freedom df = 70, the result obtained t = 2.1028 more than value t = 1,9996 in table. It can be concluded that the application of computerbased learning media about CVT on Motorcycle subject at SMK in Cilacap Regency affect student’s learning interest. Discussion Based on description of result data show that the conditions of learning media for CVT at SMK Dr. Soetomo Cilacap is feasible condition with a percentage of 86,96 percent reviewed by a media expert. Weakness of the media is still lacking some appropriate text size. In contrast, the learning media in unfit condition by the percentage of 14,28 percent in terms of learning material aspects reviewed by material expert and teachers. The media considered less appropriate for use in the learning process, because there is material that does not comply with basic competence in the syllabus. The material is still too short and not yet able to provide detailed information about CVT. Therefore, development of computer-based learning media was to conducted in order to obtain the appropriate learning media for CVT on the Motorcycle lessons. The process of developing computer-based learning media about CVT on Motorcycle subject use the procedural development model referred to Borg and Gall. Development the media is done by Macromedia Flash in stage of design and stage of program development. 696 SEMINAR INTERNASIONAL Reformulasi Paradigma Pendidikan Teknologi dan Kejuruan Testing of the validity of computer-based learning media was done by 2 media experts, one expert in learning material, and teachers. Experts in media aspect suggests to revise the developing media in background and color writing. The learning material experts advice: (1) to correct component function, display menus, icons, and background on the main page, (2) to repair video that shows the workings of CVT , and to add the workings of the torque-cam, and (3) to change the display menu icons into a one language. Meanwhile, teachers asked that componen function was corrected, and the material part is to be colored.
