Department of Science and Technology Studies STS Arrangements for Teaching in an Emergency 1. Communication In the event of an emergency or other adverse circumstances causing or likely to cause severe disruption to the department’s teaching activites students and staff should check the following for updates. UCL Home page (www.ucl.ac.uk) UCL e-mail. Wherever possible disruption will be kept to a minimum. However, the safety of staff and students is paramount. 2. Cancellation of classes In the event of class cancellation this will be communicated as follows. 2.1 If UCL cancels classes. This will be posted on the main UCL home page and communicated by e-mail and/or SMS message. 2.2 If the STS HoD cancels STS classes this will be communicated to students and staff by UCL e-mail. 2.3 If course tutors cancel classes this will be communicated to students and staff by UCL e-mail. 3. Procedures for tutors cancelling classes 3.1 Tutors will e-mail all students on the module to announce the cancellation. 3.2 Tutors will communicate the cancellation to the Departmental Office by telephone (0207 679 1328) and/or by e-mail and inform the Undergraduate Tutor or Programme Tutor (MSc) as appropriate to assist the department in disseminating information and answering queries. 3.3 Tutors are advised to record a message on their UCL answer phone stating that class is cancelled. (Be precise about the date, time, module of the cancellation etc). 4. In the event of long-term disruption to teaching 4.1 STS will attempt to continue teaching by e-learning as far as possible. 4.2 Teaching staff are encouraged to post lecture notes on the web. 4.3 Teaching staff are encouraged to make us of Moodle facilities (such as the Moodle fora). 4.4 Supervision of Disseratations: staff should keep in regular contact with supervisees by e-mail.
