UVIS Team Meeting Berlin 2009
Saturn and Titan Planning
Bob West
Working with Don Shemansky
Cassini Equinox Mission (XM) Titan
• Solar and stellar occultations
• EUVFUV Images of Titan
• HDAC Riders with CIRS and ISS in T66 and T67
– Pascal Hedelt will do the analysis
• UVIS PRIME Requests T55-T61.ppt
Titan Stellar Occs – Prime + XM
Number refers to table of
occultations
1-12 in Prime mission,
13-20 in XM
Also indicated are
Latitudes (dashed)
Altitude contours
XXM (Solstice Mission) Plan
Saturn TWT activity for UVIS
•
•
•
•
Identify solar and stellar occ opportunities (now evaluating 7A)
Conflict exercise to indicate over-subscription and conflicts (done)
Identify PIE (Pre-Integrated Events) opportunities
PIE assignments identification – done for the ‘Bridge’ segment, to come
for the rest of the XXM
• Segmentation with no liens
• Templates for apoapse and fill in the rest of periapse
TOST activity for UVIS
• Identify solar and stellar occ opportunities (done)
• ‘Jumpstart’ meeting to decide who controls +- 2 hours from closest
approach (took place at APL in mid-April)
• Additional meetings to decide on template activity outside of +- 2 hours,
plus input to PIE process plus disposition of T119 C/A (INMS vs. RSS)
Bridge Sequence – Prelude to XXM
•
•
•
•
Observations for July – September 2010
Each working group requested a set of PIEs
Three meetings were held to adjudicate
Saturn WG requested one solar occ out of
three opportunities - two were obtained
during the negotiations (Ingress and egress on
rev 138; only one was a PIE)
• Process worked well in terms or rapid decision
making
XXM Saturn Stellar Occ
Opportunities in SM-7
Key
BP = Bright star in periapse
BA = Bright star in aoapse
FP = Faint star in periapse
FA = Faint star in apoapse
Slower/brighter events have
larger symbol sizes
Goal:
Obtain good latitude coverage
XXM (Solstice Mission) Plans
• UVIS Goals for CSM.ppt
Tour 7a Titan Solar Occs
What We Must Do Next
• Check Titan solar and stellar occ opportunities
for tour SM-7A
• Plan and request EUVFUVs and riders for Titan
• Identify solar and stellar occ opportunities for
CSM (XXM) for Saturn
– Communicate these to and interact with Saturn
TWT
• Identify and quantify template activities like
system scans, EUVFUV, auroral scans – any
others?
System Scans Need a Home
• Which group (Mag or Saturn) should take
charge of system scans?
– Neither wants to do it – system scans are viewed
as a large resource request in competition with
other requests favored by each group
– My recommendation: provide an incentive by
offering extra revs to the group that takes it
• Leads need to know the details of the request
(time, data volume, turns) and how it can be
‘templatized’
General Issues for the XXM
• Dwindling resources
– Diminished workforce in the XXM
• Templates in apoapse periods
• Less dense planning in both periapse and apoapse
• Segments are mostly for one discipline with few
intruding PIEs from other disciplines
– RBOT issues
• Diminished turning and limited options for secondary
axis
• How to plan?
– Diminished power due to RTG half life
• More instruments going to sleep
