LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED Please contact Katy Harrold if you would like to attend: K.Harrold@warwick.ac.uk S2.77 Cowling Room, Second floor, Social Sciences Building To register for a FREE place please email: ier@warwick.ac.uk Abstract: Population ageing and pressures on public finances has resulted in government pressing the extension of working lives. The economic crisis has meant that some people feel they cannot afford to retire but also that many employers are cutting back on their workforces. In the decade before the crisis, “post-retirement-age workers” constituted the fastest growing group in the UK workforce. Cross-sectional and longitudinal data from the labour force survey (LFS) is used to investigate the working patterns, occupations and earnings of such workers, to compare those who changed job as they approached retirement age with those who stayed in the same job, and to look at the process of transition from one job or employer to another. Data from a representative sample of establishments is used for a complementary examination of employer practices. Of interest is how applications to continue working are treated and how those who are employed are hired. It is clear that those who work beyond retirement age are very different from other workers. There is a much higher incidence of non-standard working among the former group, even if most postretirement-age workers seem to be working on a nonstandard basis voluntarily and not involuntarily. Postretirement-age workers are to be found at the top of the occupational hierarchy. However, they are concentrated disproportionately at the bottom. Whether post-retirement-age working will continue to grow as the recession bites further is an open question. 2.00-4.00pm SEMINAR Postdoctoral Funding Matthew Watson, University of Warwick 2.00-4.00pm KEYNOTE EVENT: Higher Education: Challenges and Opportunities Speakers: Mike Shattock (Former Warwick Registrar) – ‘Comparing cuts in public expenditure 1981 and 2011: the implications for higher education' Jon Baldwin (Registrar) – ‘What makes a successful University in the 21st Century?’ Robin Naylor - 'Higher Education: evidence on private returns’ 5.00pm PhD POSTER COMPETITION – Prize Giving Ceremony Prizes will be presented by Jacquie Labbe, Chair, Warwick Graduate School Followed by: Continued.....
