An elementary teacher from Madison (who attended our workshop) leads the local 350.org mitigation movement! 2010 - Climate Literacy Ambassadors A multi-year NASA funded project (for middle & high school science teachers) to raise awareness of climate science and lay the foundation for the guiding principle of the Climate Literacy: Humans can take actions to reduce climate change and its impacts Our CLIMATE LITERCY AMBASSADORS project leveraged ESIP Teacher Workshops (Earth Science Information Partners) funded by NOAA NESDIS following a Satellite Educators Conference presentation Our connection to ESIP was a result of a NASA grant to develop Satellite Observations in Science Education (SOSE) New Great Lakes-Centric Water Cycle Diagram with feedback from hydrologists from NOAA & UW-Madison Our water cycle diagram was included in the 2011 report issued by the Wisconsin Initiative on Climate Change Impacts (WICCI) Weather and Climate Connections for 3D spherical displays Collaborations with • Hampton University and The National Maritime Center (NOAA EVL grant) • Madison Children's Museum, Milwaukee Public Museum, EAA & MG&E (Baldwin Grant) • Maryland Science Center, CICS, NCDC & CPC (NOAA EVL grant) • Aldo Leopold Nature Center http://sphere.ssec.wisc.edu/ CIMSS Facebook Page – 900+ fans http://www.facebook.com/CIMSS.UW.Madison CIMSS Tropical Cyclones site & CIMSS Satellite Blog are major resources for the CIMSS FB page CIMSS iPad Library, SatCam & ESIP Teacher Workshops In 2012 CIMSS launched a new initiative to engage teachers and students in data acquisition and regional climate studies. The CIMSS iPad Library, managed by the Schwerdtfeger Library, loans iPads to science teachers for an entire school year! The first units were distributed at the ESIP Teacher Workshop where educators learned about climate-related Apps, including SatCam, where users collect observations of cloud and surface conditions coordinated with an overpass of the Terra, Aqua, or Suomi NPP satellite. The CIMSS iPad Library is funded by NASA ESIP teacher workshops are funded by NOAA Ongoing and Future Projects • Interpretation of Real‐Time Weather and Climate Data for Spherical Displays (October 2015) • GOES-R Education Proving Ground (December 2013) Includes the Satellite Meteorology for Grades 7-12 (new GOES-R content) and working 6 teachers from 3 different states • ESIP Teacher Workshop (July 2013, UNC Chapel Hill) • Climate Literacy Ambassadors (January 2014) • Climate Change Education for Community Colleges (February 2014) A collaboration with MATC, involves a 100-level UW Climate and Climate Change course for undergraduates & summer internships at MG&E • 2014 Satellite Educators Conference at CIMSS! Pending Projects • Climate Extreme Event Preparedness and Communication – a proposal to NOAA Climate Program Office (SARP) for August 2013 to July 2014. • UW-Madison Climate Change Education Partnerships Alliance Office – a proposal to NSF for the period June 2013 to May 2018. Wait there’s more! • Graduate Students (funded on CIMSS projects) • Training for Professional Meteorologists • NWS collaborations • The Weather Guys • Wisconsin Weather Stories • CIMSS Satellite Blog • AMS WeatherFest • Soumi Scholarship And finally, how can CIMSS EPO assist your project? • The very fact that we’re here can strengthen your proposal! (ex. NIP) • The UW has several outreach venues for speakers or demos – or FB – or … • Please utilize the CIMSS education and public outreach office to share your research with others and expand your outreach activities.
