NEW DELHI: Wholesale prices rose for the first time after 17 months in April, driven by costlier food that raises some worries, but also indicating that the worst of the commodity rout may be over and businesses may soon see some sort of pricing power.
The Wholesale Price Index rose 0.34% in the first month of fiscal 2017, compared with a
0.85% decline in the previous month, data from by commerce and industry ministry showed.
Food inflation  jumped to 4.23%, led by potatoes and pulses which became dearer by
35.45% and 36.36%, respectively, denting the hopes for any rate cut in June after  retail inflation  also spiked in the past month.
The Wholesale Price Index rose 0.34% in the first month of fiscal 2017, compared with a 0.85% decline in the previous month.

"The headroom for cutting rates has come down considerably. If rains are good, RBI might cut rate, but not in near term," Axis Bank's chief economist, Saugata Bhattacharya, said. Consumer inflation rose to 5.39% in April from 4.83% in March.
The Reserve Bank of India primarily looks at retail  inflation data  and has said that it will watch the monsoon rainfall before taking any further action.
Manufactured goods inflation also climbed into positive zone with a 0.71% reading in April compared with a 0.13% fall in March. This is good news for manufacturers facing declining prices for a while. But some economists will wait some more time to take a call.

We may wait for a trend to emerge on this account," said Sunil Kumar Sinha, principal economist at India Ratings & Research. Wholesale fuel prices fell again in April from a year earlier, though at 4.83% the decline was lower than the 8.3% fall in March.
Experts saw the accelerating food inflation a worry, but felt a good monsoon — which is what the India Meteorological Department has predicted — should bring the situation under control.
"Food prices may ease in the coming months as IMD has forecasted above normal monsoon in this year and kharif output is expected to be good," CARE Ratings said in a note.
