Structures and Buildings THEMED ISSUE

Structures and Buildings is planning a themed
issue for 2017 on structures and buildings of
fibre-reinforced polymer composites.
Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are now a popular choice for
construction material in buildings and bridge structures owing to their
distinct advantages in structural engineering, such as being lightweight and
having low maintenance costs. One research theme is the use of FRPs to
strengthen existing structures that are no longer fit for purpose. A second
research theme focuses on the use of FRP shapes and systems in new-build
projects. To provide practitioners with the confidence to exploit this newer
construction material, robust research is needed to enable the community to
prepare guidance that will be recognised in national and international design
standards.
This themed issue aims to capture the state-of-the-art in the use of FRP
composites, including, but not limited to, the following topics:
n Studies involving the structural behaviour of FRP elements used as
struts, beams, columns or slabs
n Studies for the structural performance of connections/joints
n Development of innovative cross-sections, connections and
structural systems that enable the structural engineering benefits
of FRPs to be exploited
n Strengthening techniques for structural retrofitting
n Development of hybrid systems; for example, by combining FRP
and concrete structural elements to achieve the most economical
and efficient engineered solution
n Transfer of fundamental research results into practical design
guidance
n Field applications and case studies, which can include structural
health monitoring
