LONDON’S GLOBAL UNIVERSITY REBELS WITH A CAUSE In September 2016, UCL will be introducing a bold new global Philanthropy Campaign. As we count down to the launch, here’s a brief update on the exciting advances that have already been achieved thanks to donors’ generous gifts, and some of the ground-breaking projects they’ve helped to get off the ground. At UCL, we give as good as we get. SO FAR, SO MUCH GOOD Donor funds have impacted UCL in a multitude of ways; since 2011, 16,759 donations were made by 9,917 donors. CENTRE FOR ACCESS TO JUSTICE DEMENTIA RESEARCH INSTITUTE Establishing our pioneering Centre for Access to Justice, which in future will be based at our new UCL East campus. At the Centre, UCL Law students expand their education by providing pro bono advice to vulnerable citizens, giving fairer access to justice for all. Bringing UK retailers together to support the creation of a new Dementia Research Institute, leading both national and international efforts against dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and related health challenges. INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED STUDIES Appointing an academic director for our Institute of Advanced Studies, where scholars of all ages and at all stages of academia come together to develop ideas at the forefront of research and debate – to explore the unexplored, and uncover the undiscovered. SCHOLARSHIPS Providing scholarships enabling the best and most brilliant brains to study at UCL, regardless of their financial circumstances – because rich minds don’t always come from rich backgrounds. LONDON’S GLOBAL UNIVERSITY BACK TO THE FUTURE Over half a million pounds was raised by donors in Summer 2015. The Postgraduate Support Scheme provides Master’s degree scholarships to underrepresented and disadvantaged students. TESTIMONIALS I want to say a massive thank you for making my time at the Access to Justice Summer School an incredibly enjoyable and invaluable experience. I am now more determined than ever to pursue my goal of studying law at university in the future. Undertaking a programme in such a diverse, intriguing and exciting city has shown me another way of life, far different from that of my cosy but quiet town. It’s hard to overstate the positive impact of UCL on our daily lives. When I hear about another major breakthrough, a Nobel Prize, or an initiative, it reminds me why I give: because UCL matters to me, and UCL’s work matters to all of us. Maurice Watkins CBE, donor Monique Miller, Year 12 Student Our team is developing replacement heart valves that can be delivered without the need for surgery. Support from Campaign donors allowed us to buy the latest prototyping tools, and recruit a PhD student whose research will contribute to improve the long-term safety and efficacy of these new generation medical devices. Dr Gaetano Burriesci, UCL Cardiovascular Engineering Laboratory It is exciting to share UCL’s global celebration of philanthropy with over 200,000 fellow alumni all over the world. I am proud to have been able to give back to UCL as a UCLU Sabbatical Officer and look forward to continuing to do so. Doris Chen, BA History 2013 www.ucl.ac.uk/makeyourmark/campaign-insiders
