XAVIER UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA Premedical Office 1 Drexel Drive, New Orleans, LA 70125-1098 Email: xupremed@yahoo.com Website: www.xula.edu/premed Phone: (504) 520-7437; Fax: (504) 520-7923 To: From: Date: Freshman Premeds Premedical Office March 28, 2016 Today is the LAST Freshman Premed Biomedical Honor Corps Meeting for the 2015-2016 academic year. We sincerely hope that as a result of your participation, you are closer to realizing your goal of gaining acceptance into medical, dental, etc. school. Be advised that GRADES should continue to be your first priority; in addition, you should remain engaged in premed advising activities (i.e. completing meetings, submitting items for review, reading/retaining PM Office emails, etc.). We will NOT have as many group meetings moving forward, BUT we will continue to advise you via individual assessments (One-on-One Freshman Premed Assessment Meetings take place 4/11/164/26/16), periodic group meetings, and email messages that reinforce the Premedical Office’s message of cultivating competitive health professions school applications!! EVERYTHING COVERED IN THE FRESHMAN PREMED MEETINGS IS REINFORCED THROUGHOUT YOUR ENROLLMENT AT XU (i.e. the formula for successful application to medical, dental, etc. school remains CONSTANT)! Be reminded that it is imperative for you to take steps to DEMONSTRATE your interest in medicine, dentistry, etc. by participating in summer programs, volunteering, shadowing, and other experiences that give you a chance to actively learn about the health professions and prove to admission committees that you are a SERIOUS pre-health student. If you have been accepted into a summer program for 2016, please let us know by sending an email to xupremed@yahoo.com. If you will NOT be attending a summer program but are serious about gaining experience in medicine, dentistry, etc., please take the time NOW to secure shadowing and/or volunteer opportunities in your intended profession for summer 2016. Be sure to check your email daily, attend all premed meetings scheduled for Sophomore Premeds next year, and CONTINUE to revise and submit your Personal Statement and Post-Secondary Experiences (include summer 2016 experiences) to the Premedical Office. And, if you missed any of the Freshman Premed Meetings in the Fall of 2015 or Spring of 2016, please stop by the Premed Office or go to http://www.xula.edu/premed/PMInfo/PMIndex.htm to make them up. Alternately, you can complete missed meetings when they are held for new freshmen in 2016-2017. We wish you luck for the remainder of this semester and hope you have a safe (and productive) summer!!! REMINDER: You should actively read a publication such as Time, The Economist, Newsweek (or similar) from cover to cover EACH WEEK to help you develop the critical reading/analysis skills needed for the MCAT, DAT, and other entrance exams. Lagniappe: Start developing your critical reasoning skills by investing in test prep resources that allow you to do practice passages for the NON-SCIENCE sections of tests like the MCAT, DAT, etc. If you will be taking the DAT, you should begin doing practice Perceptual Ability Test (PAT) problems.
