Xavier University of Louisiana Information Technology Center XU Wireless Network Access 7 A wireless network has been made available to provide secure access to the University network for use by students, faculty and staff. Any computer with a wireless network adapter providing 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11a protocol capabilities should be able to connect to the wireless network. In addition, the wireless network adapter must support 802.1X authentication (PEAP-MSCHAPv2) and WPA encryption. The instructions below assume you are using the built-in Windows 7 wireless support instead of the wireless utility supplied with the wireless card. Connecting to XUGUEST wireless network The XUGUEST wireless network offers limited unencrypted access off-campus sites only. It does not allow access to internal resources like Webmail, Banner Web or Blackboard. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Right click on the wireless icon Windows 7 toolbar and select “Open Network and Sharing Center “ Under change your network settings click on “Connect to a network”. Select the XUGUEST wireless network and click on the “Connect” button. Your computer will then take a few minutes to acquire a network address. After a few minutes it will display “Additional log on information may be required”. Open your favorite Internet browser and attempt to connect to any external web site. You will be redirected to an authentication web page. You see a warning page about a security certificate. Ignore this message by clicking on the “Continue to this website” link. Enter your XAVIER domain username and password to authenticate. For students, this is the username and password used to access the computers in the Open Labs on campus. Once successfully authenticated, you will be redirected to your original web site Connecting to XULANET wireless network The XULANET wireless network offers secure (encrypted) access to all the network resources available on campus including Webmail, Banner Web and Blackboard. 1. Right click on the wireless icon in the toolbar and select Open Network and Sharing Center. 2. Select the Manage wireless networks option on the left side of the page. 3. Click the Add button. 4. Select the Manually create a network profile button. 5. Network name: XULANET (Capitalized) Security Type: WPA-Enterprise Encryption: TKIP 6. Remove the check from Start this connection automatically and click the Next button. 7. Click the Change connection settings button. 8. Click the Security tab. 9. Remove the check mark next to Remember my credential for this connection each time I’m logged on. 10. Click the Advanced settings tab. 11. Put a check mark in the Specify authentication mode box and select User authentication. 12. Click the OK button 13. Click the Settings button. 14. Remove the check mark next to Validate server certificate and click the Configure button. 15. Remove the check mark next to Automatically use my Windows logon name and password and click OK to close the dialogue boxes and click Close to complete the installation. 16. Right click on the wireless icon Windows 7 toolbar and select “Open Network and Sharing Center “ 17. Under change your network settings click on “Connect to a network”. 18. Select the XULANET wireless network. 19. Put in your XAVIER domain username and password. For students, this is the username and password used to access the computers in the Open Labs on campus.
