This summary provides an overview of particularly significant university academic attributes, such as student enrollment and characteristics, retention rates, graduation rates, expenditure per student, faculty distribution, and student/faculty ratios. Historic as well as current information is provided. Census information is based on the fall 2015 enrollment, four weeks after the start of the semester. Xavier is our nation’s only historically Black, Catholic university. Founded in 1925 by Saint Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, Xavier is a coeducational institution. The university, located in the heart of New Orleans, is administered by a diverse Board of Trustees composed of religious and lay members committed to its mission — to promote a more just and humane society. Xavier is composed of the College of Arts and Sciences (six divisions, including graduate studies in the division of Education and Counseling) and the College of Pharmacy. Xavier offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Theology, Doctor of Education, and Doctor of Pharmacy. Enrollment for Fall 2015 was 2,969 students, of which 72.7% are female. Race/ethnicity categories are listed within the Profile. At Xavier, Black students comprised 69.7% of the total headcount; Asian 13.1%; White students, 6.7%; Two or more races, 2.8%, and Hispanic 3.5%. The Admissions Office reports that the pool of this year’s 684 new freshmen to the university represents 51% from outside of Louisiana. The average SAT and ACT scores for entering freshmen this year are 994 and 22.7, respectively. A total of 564 degrees were awarded during the prior academic year 2014-2015; 358 - Bachelors, 43 Masters, and 163 - Doctor of Pharmacy degrees. During the academic year, Xavier students receive instruction from 220 (full-time) faculty members of diverse educational backgrounds and professional credentials; there are 443 (full-time) staff members. Freshman Class During the fall 2015 term, six hundred and eighty-four students enrolled as new firsttime freshmen, an increase of 105 students from the previous year’s new freshman cohort. What follows in the next few pages are demographic snapshots of the freshmen class of 2015. Table 1a shows our Admissions student yield since 2012 and Table 1b shows our student yield from local private schools has decreased 31.8% since 2011. Table 2 lists origin states of the freshman cohorts, from 2011 to present. This year’s 2015 cohort has a 49% representation from Louisiana which is a slight decrease from the 2014 cohort of 51% coming from Louisiana. Other states with large representation include California (4.3%), Illinois (3.7%), Georgia (5.1%), Tennessee (3.7%), and Texas (9.0%). Table 3 lists freshmen by academic division and major. Historically, more than threefourths of the first-time freshmen majored in the natural sciences, with the remaining in other disciplines. Beginning in 2013-2014 academic year, academic divisions were created at the university. Seventy-five percent (75.0%) of the new freshman cohort comprise Biological and Public Health Sciences as well as Mathematical and Physical Sciences. This is consistent with past academic department designations. Tables 4a and 4b display SAT and ACT scores of entering freshmen. Tables 5a-c shows the retention rate over the last decade as well as STEM and Non-STEM majors retention since 2007. Tables 6a and 6b gives an enrollment analysis by gender and racial/ethnic status of the 2015 freshman class. While Xavier is a predominantly Black university, increased representation of other ethnic origins continues. Within the freshman class of 2015 students of other ethnic origins make up 20% of the cohort. 1 Xavier University of Louisiana University Profile 2015-2016 1a. Student Body The majority of Xavier students are enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences as full-time students, (See Tables 7 – 8). With over 40 undergraduate programs ranging from art to biology to political science to theology, 2,185 of the enrolled 2,969 students this fall, or 75%, were undergraduate students in A&S. Xavier’s Graduate programs, within the College of Arts & Sciences, focuses on the Counseling, Education and Theology disciplines. This fall there were 152 students enrolled in its programs. More specifically, there are five graduate program areas in the Division of Education & Counseling and Institute for Black Catholic Studies. Xavier’s College of Pharmacy offers the Pharm. D. (Doctor of Pharmacy) degree. Currently, the only Pharmacy school in southern Louisiana, the Pharmacy program enrolls 605 students. The remaining student body is made up of students from Concurrent Admissions students (qualified high school students who are advancing their college careers) and Consortium students (students at local universities who are taking a limited number of courses at Xavier). Although Xavier is open to students of all racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds, the University is a historically Black Catholic institution, and the ethnicity of its student body reflects that history. As shown in Table 9, 69.7% of the student body is African–American, 13.1% is Asian, 6.7% is white, and 3.5% is Hispanic. Tables 10 and 11 indicate specific enrollment distributions for the university’s academic divisions. Tables 12 – 19 indicate specific enrollment (student level, race/ethnicity, enrollment status) state of origin, and religious preference) distributions by divisions in the College of Arts & Sciences, the Division of Education & Counseling, College of Pharmacy, and the Graduate programs, respectively. Xavier’s students come principally from Louisiana; 55.6% of the student body is from this state. Other states with large representation include Texas (7.3%), Georgia (4.3%), California (4.1%), and Mississippi (3.8%), Non-resident Aliens account for 2.8% of the student population. Geographical enrollment origins from 2011 to the present are shown in Table 20. Table 21 shows the representative religious denominations of the student population. 15 Xavier University of Louisiana University Profile 2015-2016 7. Graduates The graduation rate of new freshman students since 2005 enrolled in 4-year programs (excluding Pre-Pharmacy new freshman students) is shown in Table 22. Table 23a shows the matriculation rate into the College of Pharmacy for new Pre-Pharmacy freshman students. Matriculation rate, defined as entry (P1 status) into the College of Pharmacy, ideally occurs after the second year of matriculation at Xavier (IPEDS designates this as 100% completion rate for students not in a 4-year program). Matriculation rates in the third and fourth year are also shown. Table 23b shows the College of Pharmacy’s graduation rates for new P1 cohorts. Table 24 shows degrees granted, by type of degree, within the College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Pharmacy, and the Graduate School. Since Xavier’s enrollment is heaviest in the sciences, these divisions have the largest percentage of graduates within the College of Arts & Sciences, as is shown in Table 25 (note that present division/major distribution, as of 2014–15, is shown in all tables and is applied to past data). Table 26a provides the number of graduates, by ethnicity and gender, in each academic discipline within the College of Arts & Sciences. Table 26b provides same breakdown for the graduates of the College of Pharmacy and those of the Graduate School. Xavier’s students are attending graduate and professional schools at a rate that reflects the efforts of Xavier faculty, staff and administration. Data on Fall 2015 graduate/professional school attendance, from the National Student Clearinghouse, is presented in Tables 27 – 29. As shown in Table 27, the percent of students from the College of Arts and Sciences who enrolled in graduate/professional school in the fall or spring semester after graduation was 27.1% for 2014–15 graduates. Within the divisions of Mathematical & Physical Sciences and Social & Behavioral Sciences, approximately 1 of every 3 students attended graduate/professional school during the fall semester after graduation. Table 28 lists graduates of the College of Arts & Sciences by division and major from 2010–11 to 2014–15, and the number within each major who attended graduate/professional school in the fall semester following graduation. Table 29 highlights the disciplines and areas of concentration in which our 2014–15 graduates are pursuing their graduate/professional degrees. Table 30 indicates the breakdown of graduates from Xavier’s Graduate School by major and type of degree. 42 Xavier University of Louisiana University Profile 2015–2016 22. Data supplied by the Registrar’s Office and Vice President for Academic Affairs. 2 Academic Divisions of Fine Arts & Humanities, Biological Sciences & Public Health, Mathematical & Physical Sciences, Social & Behavioral Science created during the 2015-2016 academic year; the Division of Business was previously in existence; and the Division of Education was renamed the Division of Education & Counseling. 3 Includes, as full-time faculty members, faculty with release time for research and/or certain administrative duties. Each full-time faculty member, regardless of course load, is counted as 1 FTE faculty. Faculty teaching courses in several departments are counted only in their major department. Adjunct faculty in the College of Pharmacy are not included. 4“ Student semester hours” is the total number of students enrolled in a course multiplied by the semester hours for the course. 5 Assuming, for students, 15 sem. hrs. = 1 FTE undergraduate; 6 sem. hrs. = 1 FTE graduate. Does not include non-credit courses or team taught course in the College of Pharmacy. 6 Education faculty members teach both undergraduate and graduate courses. Hence, only the total FTE faculty and the total Student/Faculty ratio could be calculated for the Division of Education & Counseling. 75 Xavier University of Louisiana University Profile 2015-2016 39.
