The Student Experience in Brief: Xavier University of Louisiana Active Learning Each year the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) asks students at hundreds of colleges and universities to reflect on the time they devote to various learning activities. The topics explored are linked to previous research on student success in college. Results from NSSE can provide prospective students with insights into how they might learn and develop at a given college. To help in the college exploration process, NSSE developed A Pocket Guide to Choosing a College to provide students and their families key questions to ask during campus visits. Targeted and locally administered oversamples (i.e., non-randomly selected students) are not included in this report. c Sampling error is an estimate of the margin by which the true score for your institution on a given item could differ from the reported score. For example, if the sampling error is +/-5% and 60% of your students reply "very often" to a particular item, then the true population value is most likely between 55% and 65%. d Percent of total respondents within each category. These results are not weighted. e Institution-reported data. This information was used to weight your Mean Comparisons, Frequency Distributions, and Benchmark Comparisons reports. f Students who identified their residence as "dormitory or other campus housing" or "fraternity or sorority house." IPEDS: 160904 Xavier University of Louisiana Mean Comparisons August 2011 Interpreting the Mean Comparisons Report Sample Statistical Significance The Mean Comparisons report is based on information from all randomly selected or censusadministered students for both your institution and your comparison institutions. Targeted and locally administered oversamples and other non-randomly selected students are not included. Items with mean differences that are larger than would be expected by chance alone are noted with one, two, or three asterisks, referring to three significance levels (p<.05, p< .01, and p<.001). The smaller the significance level, the smaller the likelihood that the difference is due to chance. Statistical significance does not guarantee the result is substantive or important. Large sample sizes (like those produced by NSSE) tend to generate more statistically significant results even though the magnitude of mean differences may be inconsequential. Consult effect sizes (see below) to judge the practical meaning of the results. Variables The items from the NSSE survey appear in the left column in the same order and wording as they appear on the instrument. The name of each variable appears in the second column for easy reference to your data file and the summary statistics at the end of this section. Response options are also provided to help you interpret the statistics. Benchmark Items that make up the five “Benchmarks of Effective Educational Practice” are indicated by the following: LAC=Level of Academic Challenge ACL=Active and Collaborative Learning SFI=Student-Faculty Interaction EEE=Enriching Educational 1. It is calculated by dividing the mean difference by the pooled standard deviation. In practice, an effect size of .2 is often considered small, .5 moderate, and .8 large. A positive sign indicates that your institution's mean was greater, thus showing an affirmative result for your institution. A negative sign indicates the institution lags behind the comparison group, suggesting that the student behavior or institutional practice represented by the item may warrant attention. An exception to this interpretation is the “coming to class unprepared” item (item 1f.) where a negative sign is preferred (i.e., meaning fewer students reporting coming to class unprepared). Class Results are reported separately for first-year students (FY) and seniors (SR). Institution-reported class ranks are used. 1 NSSE 2011 Mean Comparisons Xavier University of Louisiana Xavier compared with: Xavier Variable 1. Benchmark b. Counts are unweighted. Column Percentage (%) This column presents the weighted percentage of students responding to the particular option in each question. Weighting Weights adjusting for gender and enrollment status (and by institutional size for comparison groups) are applied to the percentage column (%) of this report. Weights are computed separately for first-year students and seniors. Weighted results present a more accurate representation of your institution and comparison group students. Only the column percents are weighted. The counts are the actual number of respondents. Because the counts are unweighted and the column percentages are weighted, you will not be able to calculate the column percent directly from the count numbers. Student Comments August 2011 NSSE 2011 Student Comments UnitID 160904 Class 1 Gender Enrollment Additional Comments 1 2 I really enjoy the fact that most of the faculty members within the science departments always have time to help the students and are always in their rooms during office hours. 1 2 N/A 1 2 The quality of education at the university that I attend is one of prestige recognition, but the only problem that I really have is the lack of a "real" campus life. 1 2 Xavier University of Louisiana is an amazing university with amazing programs and faculty. 1 2 none 2 2 I believe that if you took the money we give to attend this school to improve on campus living environments (e.g. CLEANER SHOWERS and microwaves that were made in the past 2 years in stead of the prehistoric ones that we do have) students who live on campus like myself would perform better in classes. 2 2 Xavier is a good school, it's just not for everyone. The housing is an ABSOLUTE disgrace and I definitely would not choose to come here if I could go back in time, but I refuse to leave, so I'm making the best of it. 2 2 Xavier University of Louisiana is a great school in that the students and faculty are about to speak to each other on a more personal level, rather than that of a student and teacher. Personally, this allows me to feel more comfortable inside and outside of class when I need to speak to my professors. 160904 160904 1 1 160904 160904 160904 1 1 1 160904 1 160904 1 160904 160904 1 1 2 2 2 2 160904 160904 160904 1 1 1 2 2 2 2 2 2 160904 1 2 2 n/a The istitution that I attend should work more to providing a "REAL" college experience which requires the administration to show an interest in the students; in order to increase their retention rate, otherwise it will most ceratinly decline from it's already low rate. Overall experience is pretty good None This institution provides excellent core courses but very little strength in the liberal arts. Anything outside of the sciences, mathematics and english is mediocre. The overall quality of life is below satisfaction. I am an undergraduate Chemistry Pre-Pharmacy major in the College of Arts Science at Xavier University. My integrity, more than anything, has compelled me to strive for excellence. I believe that what I do now reflects on who I will become.Which is why I chose to attend Xavier. Xavier mission is to help students reach their goals. The help provided from the teachers, students, and tutoring centers serve as additional resources to help me achieve success. 1 NSSE 2011 Student Comments UnitID 160904 Class 1 160904 1 160904 160904 1 1 160904 160904 1 1 160904 160904 160904 160904 1 1 1 4 160904 4 160904 4 160904 4 160904 160904 160904 4 4 4 Gender Enrollment Additional Comments 2 2 Xavier University of Louisiana in my opinion is a very well prepared school that provides its students will all they need to succeed on to the next level. Not only is education important to the University but community service also is a large asset to their mission statement. This University will prepare its students to go on into the “real world” will the skill and knowledge that they need to do so. The reason that I selected that I would have chosen a different school was because I did not have a choice in going where I wanted to. I have been attending summer programs at this University for two years so it was easy for me to adjust although this school was not of my choice. 2 2 The food is horrible, there are little to no on campus social activities or games, this school is all academic but has some of the best teachers I have ever had. 2 2 Xavier university of Louisiana baby sudents to much it feels like we are still in high school. 2 2 college has taught me that i really have to be on top of everything in order to suceed and do well which was very challenging to me last semester 2 2 Not enough student activity 2 2 I really like how this institution goes the extra mile to help their students succeed. Yet, I still kind of out of place, this is a very different experience. 2 2 I don't like my current intitution! 2 2 I believe that I am recieving a really sound education. 2 2 None 1 2 Xavier has a strong understanding of an academic education, but has a very poor understanding of the need for social growth in college. 2 2 Overall, Xavier University of Louisiana provides a quite well-rounded, liberal arts opportunity to gain an education. I have not only gained academic knowledge here, but many significant lessons that will help me to strive on further in life. A college education is usually what you make of it, and Xavier provided the essentials to allow students to create a fun environment to learn within. 2 2 I think this school should focus on teaching us the information and not justhaving us memorize what will be on a MCAT. 2 2 I feel as though I have recieved a quality eduation while attending Xavier, however, since I have been around other students while attending study abroad, the gap in the actual awareness of the average Xavier student of the world around us is sadly lacking. Xavier must do more to encourage their students to take an active role in the world society. "To create a just and humane society", one must actually KNOW what's going on in society. 2 2 I truly enjoyed my experiences here. 2 2 N/A 2 2 N/A 2 NSSE 2011 Student Comments UnitID 160904 Class 4 160904 160904 4 4 Gender Enrollment Additional Comments 2 2 The quality of my educational experience is superb. I can happily say that i am well pleased with the services provided me. And it was an honor to see and work with people who are pasionate about their lives. 2 2 nope 2 2 I love Xavier and I have learned an immense amount. All of my Psychology professors were helpful and I could tell that they are truly dedicated to educating the students and helping them prepare for the future. I feel prepared for graduate school and the world in general because of the education I have received from Xavier. I wish that more people knew about how great the Psychology department at Xavier really is. Also, because Xavier uses a well rounded approach to education Xavier students are exposed to a curriculum that based on on across curriculum thinking. This sort of education allows the students to see the world from a theological, philosophical, artistic, biological, sociological, psychological, etc view. With this view I know that I am better equipped to take on the world and to help others. I will always the education I have gotten from Xavier and will continue to sing its praises! 3
