Policy Change(s)
Beginning in the fall semester of 2015, the minimum number of hours required for an
undergraduate degree will change from 128 hours to 120 hours.
New Degree(s) Offered
Ed. D. in Educational Leadership
The doctoral program (Ed. D.) in educational leadership has been approved by the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. The 60-hour curriculum will
focus on urban education and school turnaround, utilizing a multidisciplinary approach that
blends theory and applied research with practice. In keeping with Xavier’s Mission, the program
is designed for the candidate who wants to become a leader and agent of change in approaching
the current challenges facing many schools today. The program follows Xavier’s mission with a
focus on leadership values that include social justice, collaborative relationships, advocacy, and
inclusion of all the organization’s stakeholders. Candidates will learn strategies and skills that
will engage all constituents in creating schools with sustainable high performance based on
effective organizational models and best instructional practices. The platform to change is
underpinned by the pedagogical successes of urban schools that consistently meet the academic
needs of all children, including those who are poor and minority.
New Minor(s)
Professional Writing
The Department of English offers a Professional Writing minor through the Arts and
Sciences Curriculum. A grade of B or better in ENGL 1000/1010 and ENGL 1020/1023H will be
required of students who are completing the program as their academic minor. The minor in
Professional Writing will consist of professional writing courses and courses in English, Creative
Writing, and Mass Communication.
The 18 hours of course work consist of:
・ TWO workshop seminars that, while different in focus, emphasize clear prose
writing for a general audience (PRWT 2000 and PRWT/CRWT 2070);
・ ONE class on grammar (PRWT/ENGL 2200);
・ ONE class on technical writing (PRWT 3155);
・ and ONE of the following six choices, adding up to an additional 6 hours:
-- two sections of On-campus Writing Apprenticeship (PRWT 4000) ; or
-- two sections of Off-campus Writing Apprenticeship (PRWT 4001); or
-- PRWT 4000 and PRWT 4001 (one section each); or
-- MSCM 2222 and MSCM 2500; or
-- one 3 hour writing course (such as Science Writing) and MCSM 2222
(course must be approved by program director); or
-- one 3 hour writing course and one section of Writing Apprenticeship (course
must be approved by program director).
Xavier University of Louisiana 2014-2016 Catalog Corrigenda
It should be noted that, while many classes are writing-intensive, only those classes that are
“writing-centric” have been chosen for the course load. The point of a writing-centric course is
the writing itself. No grade lower than a C may be applied to the minor.
Courses
PRWT 2000. Professional Prose. The students of the workshop seminar write potentially
publishable works of professional-level prose on a topic of their own choice; revised versions go
into an end of semester portfolio. In addition, students write weekly critiques and one review.

Current Policy
The Biology and Biology Premedical B.S. degree programs currently require 129 credit
hours, including statistics (MATH 1020, a 3 credit-hour expansive core course, or an
alternate Statistics or Biostatistics course) as a major requirement, and two additional 3hour expansive core courses.
New Policy
The Biology B.S. and Biology B.S. Premedical programs require a minimum 126 credit
hours. Both programs require a statistics course (selected from MATH 1020, STAT
2010, MATH 3010/3010D, or STAT 3010/3010D), which is a Mathematics requirement

Proposal to reduce the degree credit-hour requirement for a degree in English from 128 to 120
Current Policy
Currently English majors are required to pass a total of 128 credit hours,

Proposal to reduce the degree credit-hour requirement for a degree in English/English Education
from 131 to 120
Current Policy
Currently English/English Education majors are required to pass a total of 131
credit hours.
Xavier University of Louisiana 2014-2016 Catalog Corrigenda
New Policy
We propose to reduce the required number of required credit hours for this program to
120. We will achieve this goal by dropping the following courses from the
English/English Education Program:
ENGL 2020 World Literature 2 (3 sh)
ENGL 3135 Language: History & Theory (3 sh)
ENGL 4*** Seminar #2 (3 sh)
Free Elective (2 sh)
The result: English/English Education majors will be completing 36 hours of English
(excluding Core). The previous number of required English hours beyond the Core was
45.
We also propose to require only 3 hours of 4000-level English seminar (instead of 6); we
believe that the required Shakespeare class (ENGL 3040 or 3050) might be considered to
be the replacement for the second seminar, since Shakespeare is an important figure
whose work is often taught at the secondary level.
Finally we propose to eliminate the 2-hour Free Elective requirement for English/English
Education majors.
With these changes, 11 hours will be dropped from the program. 131 – 11 = 120.
