UCL SCHOOL OF PHARMACY LIBRARY October 2015 Library Newsletter WELCOME A big welcome to the start of the academic year from myself and all the UCL School of Pharmacy Library staff. It was great to meet the Freshers during Induction Week and many thanks to those new MPharm and MSc students who completed our short survey at the Library pop-up stall in the Square Lounge on your first day – the information you provided is one of the things that we use to tailor our training to your needs. We hope you enjoyed the freebies – we’ve noted the popularity of the highlighter packs! Work doesn’t stop for us over the Summer and this newsletter highlights some of the improvements and new initiatives that have been implemented. Satisfaction levels with the Library may have been high in the 2015 National Student Survey, but we continually look to go one better! Of special note to researchers is our seminar series detailed on page 5 and RPS changes on page 6. Michelle Head of Library Services CONTACT THE LIBRARY Email us at: sop.library@ucl.ac.uk Follow us on Twitter @SquareLibrary Tel: 020 7753 5833 Come and see us at the Issue and Enquiry Desk Visit our Website: www.ucl.ac.uk/ pharmacy/facilities/ library SELF-SERVICE You may have noticed some changes at the Square Library. Over the summer, the Library has installed an RFID system (radio-frequency identification). Significantly, this will enable library users to use the new self-service machine, which is located by the printers/ photocopiers. The Issue and Enquiry Desk will remain open and you will still be able to borrow and return books this way. You will still need to visit the Issue and Enquiry Desk to borrow laptops, iPads, cal- culators and phone chargers, but a large part of the Library’s stock will be available for self-issue and return. We hope that the benefits of using RFID will include shorter queues at the Issue and Enquiry Desk and more staff time dedicated to enquiries. Have you used one of the self-issue machines yet? Did you find it easy to use? We would like your feedback! Email us at sop.library@ucl.ac.uk “a large part of the library’s stock will be available for self-issue and return” PURCHASE SUGGESTIONS AND INTER-LIBRARY LOANS Can’t find an article via Explore? Staff and students at the School of Pharmacy are able to request material for research using the Library’s inter-library loan service. For more information, visit the ‘services and facilities’ section of our website: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/ pharmacy/facilities/library/ services/interlibrary If you come across something you think we should purchase for the Library, please e-mail your suggestion to: sop.library@ucl.ac.uk 2 NEW ACQUISITIONS DISPLAY You will find a new display trolley for recent acquisitions, where we will place new material for a while before it is shelved. At the moment we are displaying books written by staff here at the UCL School of Pharmacy. BOOK SWAP Need some new reading material? At the Library we run a ‘book swap’ scheme, with a variety of fiction and non-fiction titles available. Please browse the book swap trolley near the issue and enquiry desk. Feel free to take one and leave a donation for the British Heart Foundation in the collection box (the UCL SoP Health Awareness Committee charity), or exchange it for one of yours that you no longer want. There are lots of titles to choose from and it’s for a good cause. MORE FUNDRAISING We are also collecting stamps for the RNIB’s used stamps appeal. We have a stamp collection box in the Library Approach and would like to encourage everyone to recycle their stamps here and we will send them to the RNIB. Both British and Overseas stamps are accepted. We always welcome suggestions, so if you have any ideas about initiatives or competitions we can run in the Library space, do get in touch with library staff. DID YOU KNOW? Laptops and iPads are available to borrow at the Issue and Enquiry Desk You can also borrow apple and android phone chargers Calculators are available for loan The UCL School of Pharmacy Library is one of 18 UCL libraries Photo by Arvind Vepa “We have been digitizing an image a month, for an Online Museum” DEVELOPING THE ARCHIVES We are currently in the process of making our archive collections more accessible. Since November 2014 we have been digitizing an image a month, for an Online Museum. Our first entry was a group photograph of School of Pharmacy students from the first year of WW1, with a quote from the ‘Square Chronicle’, a student publication. The School had not yet moved to its current location, so the photograph was taken in nearby Bloomsbury Square. Please visit our website to see some of these images, which provide an insight into the past experiences of students and staff at the School of Pharmacy. We have also been contributing to archive displays for alumni reunion events and Tess Andaya from the Multimedia Unit has produced some amazing posters for former students to enjoy. We recently had a visit from Professor Liam Burke, who graduated from the School in 1945. We were able to show him his class photo and student publications from his time at the School (photo above). In the future we hope to run exhibitions in the Library, using material from the archives including photos and objects. Watch this space! The area with the printers stays open after the Library has closed—you can access the printers by swiping your card at the door There are a number of other libraries in the area which you can register to use, such as Senate House Library and the British Library The SoP Library was originally going to be housed in what is now the refectory The School of Pharmacy is often called ‘The Square’ Undergraduate students can borrow up to 10 items at any time, from any UCL library The SoP Library runs regular training sessions in databases and referencing The classification system used in the library is ‘Universal Decimal Classification’ (UDC), originally designed by two Belgians 3 GREEN IMPACT SCHEME The UCL School of Pharmacy Library participates, along with other UCL departments, in the NUS Green Impact Scheme to improve environmental sustainability. Our ‘Greenpharm’ team are delighted to have been awarded Platinum for 2014/5 . We are running a few schemes in the library, such as a stamp recycling point (for the RNIB used stamps appeal) and a charity book swap. Please take a look at the Green Impact notice board in the library and leave any suggestions for events or improvements in our designated environmental suggestions box (made of sustainable bamboo!). For more information on Green issues at UCL, find UCL's Environmental Sustainability Team at: www.ucl.ac.uk/greenucl and on twitter @GreenUCL TRAINING SESSIONS Issue and Enquiry Desk staff are always ready to help with any initial query you may have about information resources, including the Library catalogue. Please email sop.library@ucl.ac.uk or call 020 7753 5834 if you would like to arrange a more in-depth session on any of the following: Finding and Using Information Specific Literature Databases Referencing and EndNote Research Publications Database (RPS) We can also provide advice on a range of other areas including Copyright, Open Access, Bibliometrics, Predatory Publishers and Current Awareness services. ORCID Since 1st August 2015 the Wellcome Trust has asked grant applicants to provide an ORCID ID, a unique number assigned to a researcher’s name -http://blog.wellcome.ac.uk/2015/06/30/who-are -you-recognising-researchers-with-orcid-identifiers/. The National Institute for Health Research followed in September - http:// www.nihr.ac.uk/newsroom/featured-news/nihr-begins-roll-out-ofmandatory-orcid-id-requirement/3024 . ORCID IDs are also used by RCUK, numerous publishers, are recognised by HEFCE and can be used to download details of your publications into UCL’s RPS. An ORCID ID is very easy for authors to create and helps research and data to be attributed to the correct researcher. An ORCID ID stays with the author wherever they work. 4 In Summer 2014 UCL registered all researchers for ORCID IDs, so do type your name into the search box at the top of the ORCID home page at http://orcid.org/ to check that you don’t already have an account before creating a new one. READING LISTS@UCL ReadingLists@UCL gives students easy access to reading lists wherever they are, and improves the student experience. It gives academic staff the chance to create and update their reading lists quickly and efficiently, with optimal impact, and it also helps Library staff ensure that the Library has the resources in stock for students. We can assist academic staff by acting as administrators for them, or guide them in how to set up their own lists. If you are interested in joining the service or require further information about it, please speak to a member of Library staff or e-mail sop.library@ucl.ac.uk . RESEARCHER SEMINARS For our research staff and PhD readers we’ve launched a Seminar Series this term to introduce information on hot topics.
