Scheme Objectives
The International Visiting Teaching Fellowship scheme is designed to attract leading practitioners in teaching and pedagogical innovation to Warwick to undertake a significant programme of engagement with a wide cross-section of the University. This provides a platform to:
Champion Warwick as a centre of excellence in innovative pedagogy and practice at an international level
Raise the profile of Warwick’s leading teaching development community
Engage with external experts
Enrich the teaching development environment for new and established staff
There are two strands to this programme provided under the auspices of the WIHEA:
The Academy strand is focussed on visitors to Warwick only and offers an opportunity for academic departments to attract international colleagues who can contribute to the innovative pedagogical activity of the University by hosting external visitors for circa 4 week period.
The Monash Warwick Alliance strand provides an opportunity for academic departments in these two universities to work together to share, develop and review innovative pedagogical activity through exchanges of academics, including external Fellows if appropriate, within and across disciplines.
Specific criteria and funding arrangements applying to these strands are provided below.
BOTH schemes are expected to meet the objectivities above and be framed around the following activities and eligibility:
Visiting Teaching Fellow Activities
Academy Visitors are expected to be engaged with colleagues at Warwick for circa 4 weeks. This includes a period of residency at Warwick and may further include the use of synchronous video-link activities. During this period, it is anticipated that Visiting Fellows will contribute to a number of activities. Applications should therefore identify events and activities to which the proposed Fellow will contribute or lead and which enhance the teaching programmes, strategies and knowledge exchange across the University. The programme of events should aim to incorporate a number of the following:
An event focussing on the Fellow’s own work in teaching innovation, targeted at early career scholars.
Activity aimed at an audience beyond the Fellow’s own disciplinary background (e.g. lecture, performance, exhibition, seminar, workshop).
Exploration of further collaborative opportunities with groups/individuals beyond the Principal
Applicant’s disciplinary area.
Cross-university and/or cross-sector meetings.
Engagement with the Academy Fellows exploring approaches to development of practice.
Visiting Fellows are also required to submit material as requested by the Academy (e.g. posters/ podcasts/ profile information) that can be used to promote the visit and scheduled events as well as contribute to the development of the WIHEA repositories of learning objects.
To help deliver a dynamic programme of engagement, more than one Fellow can be nominated in an application. The nominees’ visit dates should overlap but do not have to be of the same duration.
Eligibility
Applications cannot be submitted independently by a potential Visiting Teaching Fellow themselves.
Visiting Teaching Fellow(s) must be nominated by a permanent Warwick academic staff member
(including probationary staff). This person should be identified on the form as the Principal Applicant .
The Principal Applicant is responsible for liaising with the nominated Fellow prior to submission of the application, for coordinating the Fellow’s events (including room bookings and catering) and transport arrangements, and is expected to be at the University during the tenure of the Fellowship. A Secondary
Applicant should be named who will take responsibility for hosting the Fellow in case of the Principal
Applicant’s unforeseen absence.
Nominee
The calibre of the nominated Fellow is of paramount importance and the application and supporting CV is expected to convey the impact of the Fellow’s expertise within their specific field of teaching, innovation or enhancing the student experience. Nominees to visit Warwick are expected to be based outside the UK.
Funding
The maximum award value for a single visitor is £3,725, excluding accommodation costs. The award funding is to be used to cover international and local travel expenses, event organisation, publicity, coordination (e.g. ad-hoc administrative event support can be paid to postgraduate or postdoctoral researchers). Accommodation costs are covered directly by WIHEA in addition to any award and should not be included in the application budget. International Visiting Teaching Fellows will normally be housed in appropriate, on-campus residential accommodation. Potential Fellows and Principal
Applicants are invited to discuss the accommodation options available with the WIHEA Administrator.
All expenditure must be recorded in the University accounts (SAP) by 31 st July in the same academic year in which the award is valid. It is the responsibility of the Principal Applicant to ensure that expenditure has been appropriately recorded. The Principal Applicant’s department will be responsible for any over expenditure and/or late claims.
Review Criteria
Applications that propose a spectrum of innovative and/or high impact activities associated with the
Fellow will be graded more highly than nominations of scholars of similar quality that are less ambitious in programmatic scope. The extent and impact of the planned activities should reflect the duration of the visit, with longer periods of residence providing more sustained programmes of activity.
Applications will be assessed on:
Quality of the proposed Fellow(s) contribution to their field, as attested by their CV
Ability of the programme to make a significant contribution
Ability of programme of events to impact teaching and learning at the University of Warwick
Value for money – potential impact of activity relative to WIHEA contribution
