TULLupdate Achieving excellence in accounting education Message from the Director The 2014 – 2015 academic year is drawing to a close, and my days as Interim Director are numbered. It has been enjoyable working with the faculty, staff, and student body in the Tull School and getting to meet so many supportive alumni and friends. The big news, of course, is that we were successful in hiring a new Director of the Tull School, Ted Christensen, who will join us this summer. An article about Ted Steve Baginski appears in this newsletter. I am a firm believer that our successes today are traceable to decisions made a long time ago. So, to whoever admitted Ted to our doctoral program many years ago, the Tull School says “thank you.” He has made his way in life and now returns to lead us. For that we are grateful. I am confident that we will all benefit from Ted’s commitment to excellence and his loyalty to the Tull School. Our alumni and friends continue to support us with their gifts and their presence continued on page 7 SPRING 2015 VOLUME 13, NUMBER 1 Dixon Hughes Goodman makes fiveyear, $324,000 pledge to support UGA’s Tull School of Accounting Dixon Hughes Goodman has completed a campaign to provide a gift of $324,000 to the J. M. Tull School of Accounting at the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business. “Once again, our alumni and friends at Dixon Hughes Goodman have placed their core value of ‘building leaders for tomorrow’ into action,” said Steve Baginski, Interim Director. “These funds support faculty research and teaching, student organizations, and scholarships. We thank the people at DHG for being forward-thinking friends of higher education, and we value our partnership with them.” In recognition of the pledge, which will be paid over the next five years, the Tull School of Accounting will designate a Dixon Hughes Goodman Teaching Fellow. Dixon Hughes Goodman is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. It ranks among the top 20 public accounting firms in the nation, with more than 1,800 professionals in 12 states. The firm has a strong commitment to personal service and client success. Ted Christensen appointed new Director of Tull School After 20 years, Ted Christensen is returning home to the Tull School of Accounting. In June of 1991, Ted came to Athens with his wife, Donna, and their two sons to begin the doctoral program. Prior to coming to UGA, Ted had earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting at San Jose State University and worked for a regional public inside faculty activities honor roll graduate news accounting firm in California before going to Brigham Young University (BYU) for a 2 4 7 MAcc degree in tax. While he was a student at BYU, he had the opportunity to teach at a local community college and decided that teaching accounting was even more fun than doing accounting, which lead him to UGA to earn a Ph.D. When he came to Athens the first time, he never imagined that 24 years later he would return to UGA as a faculty member. (Actually, he says he dreamed about it but never continued on page 3 TULL update 1 FACULTYactivities In December, Tim Bentsen was named to the Board of Directors and Audit Committee of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. In October, Denny Beresford spoke to Beta Alpha Psi and other accounting students at Kennesaw State University on “My Career in Four Acts.” He also participated in a panel on “Enforcement and Compliance – How Does the Board Fit In?” at the 12th Annual Directors’ Institute on Corporate Governance sponsored by the Practicing Law Institute in New York City in November. In its December issue, Strategic Finance published “Thanks IMA,” Denny’s article discussing how his involvement for over fifty years in the Institute of Management Accountants has influenced his career. In January, he made two presentations at Georgia Regents University in Augusta: “My Career in Four Acts” to accounting students and “Ethical Issues in Corporate Governance” to business students, faculty, and external constituents. Denny has been appointed to an additional three-year term on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Corporate Directors where he continues to serve as Chairman of the Audit Committee. Additionally, he continues his service as a member of the Financial Reporting Committee of the Institute of Management Accountants. John Campbell’s paper, “Audit Committee Stock Options and Financial Reporting Quality after the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002,” co-authored with James Hansen (Weber State University, and former Tull Ph.D. student), Chad Simon (Utah State University, and former Tull Ph.D. student), and Jason Smith (University of Nevada – Las Vegas), has been accepted for publication in Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory. His paper, “Do Sophisticated Investors use the Information Provided by the Fair Value of Cash Flow Hedges?,” co-authored with Jimmy Downes (University of Nebraska – Lincoln) and Bill Schwartz (Oklahoma State University), has been accepted for publication in the Review of Accounting Studies. John served as a discussant at the 2014 Conference on Financial Economics and Accounting in Atlanta and participated in the 2015 Financial Accounting Standards Board Financial Reporting Issues Conference in Norwalk, Connecticut, where he held discussions with and provided input to FASB and SEC representatives on current standardsetting issues. Last November, Tina Carpenter served as a Fraud Panel Speaker at the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board’s Standing Advisory Group Meeting in Washington, DC to discuss her research and teaching in the fraud area. Also last fall, she presented “Do Nonprofessional Investors React to Fraud Red Flags?,” co-authored with Joe Brazel (NC 2 TULL update State University), Keith Jones (George Mason University), and Jane Thayer (University of Virginia) at both the University of Wisconsin and the University of Nevada–Las Vegas. Tina was a discussant at the American Accounting Association Auditing Midyear Meeting in Miami, Florida in January. At Brigham Young University this spring she presented “Solving the Puzzle: Can Audit Firm Communication Improve Auditors’ Professional Skepticism and Fraud-related Judgments when Alumni Affiliations are Present?,” coauthored with Ashley Austin (Tull Ph.D. student). Tina has been selected to the Editorial Boards of Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory (2015-2018), Behavioral Research in Accounting (2015-2018), and Journal of Forensic Accounting Research (2015-2018), and continues to serve on the Editorial Boards of Issues in Accounting Education and Current Issues in Auditing. Margaret Christ’s paper, “Do Extant Management Control Frameworks Fit the Alliance Setting? A Descriptive Analysis,” co-authored with Shannon Anderson (UC Davis), Henri Dekker (VU University) and Karen Sedatole (Michigan State University) has been accepted for publication by Industrial Marketing Management. In November at the Ph.D. Project Conference in Chicago, Mark Dawkins presented “Secrets of a Successful Ph.D. Applicant,” co-authored with Thomas Lopez (University of Alabama). Also that month, at the American Accounting Association Diversity Section Meeting in Atlanta, he presented “The Association between Academic Pedigree and Top-6 Publications: A Joint Examination of Ph.D. Institution and Employment,” co-authored with Natasha Burns (University of Texas – San Antonio) and Matthew Wieland (Kelley School of Business, Indiana) and “Faculty-Size Adjusted Accounting Program Rankings,” co-authored with Donald Ariail (Southern Polytechnic State University) and Matthew Wieland. Mark presented “The Changing Landscape of Accounting Promotion and Tenure Publication Standards,” co-authored with Michael Dugan (Southern Mississippi), at the Georgia Association of Accounting Educators’ Conference at Kennesaw State University in February. Jackie Hammersley’s paper, “Auditor Mindsets and Audits of Complex Estimates,” co-authored with Emily Griffith (University of Wisconsin – Madison and former Tull Ph.D. student), Kathryn Kadous (Emory University), and Donald Young (Georgia Tech) has been accepted for publication in Journal of Accounting Research. She also served as the Chair of the Accounting, Behavior, and Organizations Section of the American Accounting continued on page 3 Christensen continued from page 3 wanted a daughter and was finally able to convince Donna to to try for a girl. She was somewhat reluctant because she believed they were “only capable of producing male offspring.” Fortunately, the gamble paid off and they finally had a daughter shortly after moving to BYU. While Ted has been a faculty member at BYU, he and his family have enjoyed several adventures as a result of opportunities to teach at other schools. Twice he was able to teach in a semester-long study abroad program in Italy (the spring semester of 2007 and the fall semester of 2011). He taught a doctoral seminar at the University of Utah in the fall of 2012 and he taught advanced financial accounting in a summer program at Santa Clara University in California for over 10 years. Last year, he was a Ted and his family lived in Verona, Italy in 2007 while Ted taught in a study abroad program. L-R: Scott, Stephanie, Dallin, Matt, Tyler, Josh, Donna, and Ted thought it would really be possible.) When Ted began the doctoral program in 1991, he was fortunate to work with several of the then “new” faculty members: Linda and Michael Bamber and Jenny and Ken visiting professor at the University of Michigan. Ted enjoys cycling and competing in triathlons and is the author of numerous academic articles and two textbooks. The boys have all “left the nest” and the Christensens return to Athens with their daughter, Stephanie, who will begin high school this fall. Although leaving their sons and two grandchildren behind in Utah won’t be easy, they are excited to return to Athens to another of Ted’s alma maters! Gaver. When the Christensens came to UGA, they knew their family wasn’t complete. However, they didn’t want to have a four-year gap between their kids, so the family expanded by two more sons while they were in Athens. Upon completing the doctoral program in 1995, Ted took his first job as an assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he taught just about every course offered (from managerial and cost accounting to introductory and intermediate financial accounting to corporate tax). After five years in Ohio and the birth of a fifth son, Ted returned as a faculty member to one of his alma maters, BYU, where he has taught for the past 15 years. Fortunately, Ted has been able to focus his teaching and research in the financial accounting area during his time at BYU. While five sons is a large family by just about anyone’s standards, Ted always Faculty Activities continued from page 2 Association’s Doctoral Consortium in Philadelphia. Jackie presented a panel session on how to effectively co-author research projects and served as a small group leader at the Auditing Section of the American Accounting Association’s Doctoral Consortium held in Miami in February. She is currently serving on the Competitive Manuscript Award Selection Committee for the American Accounting Association. Ted’s 1996 graduation from Tull. A graduate of Terry herself, Christie was a student employee in the College while pursuing her degree in Management. Upon graduation in May of 2013, she was hired by Tull, originally as an assistant for the MAcc program, but was quickly promoted to undergraduate advisor. Proving herself in both positions, she was a natural fit when the Program Coordinator position for the MAcc program opened, and she has excelled advising both undergraduate and graduate students. The Terry College will formally honor Christie for this award at the Terry College Honors Day in April, and will nominate her for the university-wide advising award in January 2016. News About Tull Graduates Atlanta’s Bennett Thrasher has promoted Cory Bennett (MAcc & BBA ’01) from Senior Manager to Partner in their Financial Reporting & Assurance department. Moore Colson of Atlanta announces the hiring of Chad Creasman (BBA ’14) as a Lender Services Associate and Katherine Gleaton (BBA ’12 & MAcc ’13) as a Tax Associate. Mac Smith (BBA ’91 & MAcc ’92) has been promoted to Partner at Carr, Riggs & Ingram in Atlanta. Message from the Director continued from page 1 on campus. Our faculty remains dedicated to excellence in teaching and research. As a faculty member, I tend to be focused on my own work and, as a result, miss many of my colleagues’ achievements. As Director, I read everyone’s performance report. It is eye-opening to see the magnitude of their research and service contributions at the national and international levels. Moreover, student ratings of their teaching confirm my belief that our faculty don’t trade off teaching and research effort – they excel at both! Our undergraduate and MAcc students continue to take full advantage of the great opportunity to study at the Tull School. In the Tull doctoral last newsletter, I reported student Lisa Hinson that they passed the CPA has been selected exam at an extraordinary as a 2015 Deloitte first-time pass rate of 84%. Foundation Doctoral It would be unreasonable to Fellow. expect improvement, right? Well, the most recent statistics just reported that they passed at an 86.2% rate, finishing third among all large programs. Among all large public programs, we were second only to those pesky Wisconsin Badgers. Our Ph.D. program also continues to place well and generate award-winning students. Steve Utke will join the faculty at the University of Connecticut this fall. Also, I am happy to announce that one of our doctoral students, Lisa Hinson, recently learned that her dissertation year will be funded by the prestigious Deloitte Foundation’s Doctoral Fellowship Program which awards only ten such fellowships each year. Our faculty have the privilege of working with these students for five years, teaching them to follow our career paths. So, their achievements are especially meaningful to us. Thank you for your support during this past year. I look forward to rejoining the faculty. Please join me in welcoming Ted Christensen as he steps into this very important role. What’s News With You?
