CALL for applications for a prestigious Fellowship in
Translational Medicine
UCL is part of an exciting initiative, The EUREKA Institute of Translational Medicine, which offers innovative courses
for Early Career Researchers. Translational medicine (TM) encompasses the continuum from identifying an idea to its
development into new therapies for human diseases. By enabling people to develop research through this
continuum, we will move critical scientific insights into tangible benefits for patients. Details information about the
course and Institute can be found here http://www.eurekainstitute.org/ or by enquiry to Professor Lucy
Wedderburn on l.wedderburn@ucl.ac.uk.
In 2015, UCL is planning two initiatives:
1. EUREKA Day@UCL, April 20th 2015 at the Wolfson Centre, UCL Bloomsbury Campus. This full-day event for
20 delegates will examine attributes of leadership, creativity and teamwork in the context of TM. There will
be opportunities to learn from and network with world leaders and to engage in learner-centred discussions
on the challenges facing drug development and how to bridge the divide between concept and patient.
2. To interview and select two high-flying delegates to the week long residential Certificate Course in
Translational Medicine May 3 – 9, Siracusa (Sicily), Italy. The course is a highly intensive transformative
week of learning, focused on the fellows who attend and led by world-class faculty.

Educational Objectives of the EUREKA events include




Analyse the business, scientific and regulatory aspects of TM
Explore the challenges professionals encounter in TM
Develop critical thinking skills to approach the challenges in TM
Develop communication skills for presenting complex scientific ideas to a broad spectrum of people
Eligibility criteria for both events: candidates should be in a PhD/Post-doc/Fellowship/Lecturer position at UCL, from
either clinical or non-clinical track, and if they already hold a research degree, should be no more than 10 years postaward of their PhD. Please note that these courses are aimed at highly motivated individuals.
We are asking for applications for both events, with the support from Division/Institute Directors for applicants.
Please note that no one fellow will be awarded a place on both the one-day course and the full week course in Sicily.
To apply, please send your CV and a 500-word statement of needs and expectations as well as a letter of support
from Division/Institute Director, to Prof Lucy Wedderburn, c/o Dauda Bappa <d.bappa@ucl.ac.uk>. Please state
clearly whether you would like to be considered for the one-day course only (April 20th), the week course only (May
3- 9), or you would be interested in either.
Deadline for nominations: February 2nd, 2015 at 5 pm, emails to <d.bappa@ucl.ac.uk>
Selection of the 2015 EUREKA UCL fellows is highly competitive, and chosen by a UCL panel. For the one-week
residential course in May, the UCL contribution will cover the costs of the tuition, course materials, food and
accommodation but not travel costs to and from Sicily (we will expect your department to cover those).
“A fantastic experience for me, and has had a long lasting benefit for my career”
Dr Nistala, UCL, previous EUREKA Fellow
