LEARNING GOALS FOR THE STUDY OF RELIGION MAJOR Study of Religion majors engage in a variety of different ways of studying religion. OUTCOMES: I. Religion majors have knowledge of the beliefs, practices, and worldviews of major living religions. C1. They are familiar with the major teachings and practices of the following traditions: Hinduism Buddhism Confucianism Taoism Judaism Islam Christianity C2. They can describe similarities and differences among traditions as well as the diverse religious viewpoints within each tradition. C3. They can describe examples of important religious disagreements, controversies, or issues. II. Religion majors demonstrate an ability to reflect critically about religion. C1. They can describe and differentiate between devotional practices and the academic study of religion. C2. They are able to examine in a critical fashion the interaction of religion with culture. C3. They are aware of how their own beliefs and behaviors are formed. III. Religion majors are effective readers, writers, and speakers who can work collaboratively. C1. They are able to read and comprehend difficult texts. C2. They are able to produce written documents for a variety of appropriate audiences C3. They are able to use a variety of library resources, both print and electronic, to conduct research in religion. C4. They are able to competently and comfortably present research or ideas orally. C5. They are able to work effectively with others to formulate and present ideas and research. IV. Religion majors are able to relate the major to their career and to their future goals. C1. They are prepared to enter a variety of careers or go on for further study. C2. They are able to use the skills and knowledge developed in the study of religion to clarify their vision of a career appropriate to themselves. C3. They can confidently explain to prospective employers outside the field of religion how what they have learned in the study of religion will enable them to be excellent employees who can do a variety of tasks competently.
