General Information

The UCL Urban Laboratory, established in 2005, is a university-wide initiative to bring together the best urban teaching and research at UCL. Our activities build on the full spectrum of work at UCL across the arts and sciences, ranging from civil engineering to film studies, planning, urban history and the latest developments in architectural and urban design. Urban research at UCL draws on a rich heritage of ideas including the path breaking insights of figures such as Patrick Abercrombie, Peter Hall, Ruth Glass, Peter

Cook and Reyner Banham. The engagement between UCL and wider public debates over the future design and planning of cities is a distinctive feature of UCL research and teaching.

The focus on cities at UCL has a strong international dimension building on extensive networks across Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. At the UCL Urban Laboratory we wish to encourage thinking and research that is critical, independent and interdisciplinary.

The Urban Laboratory runs regular lectures, seminars, workshops and exhibitions that will be of interest to students at all levels. Our current work focuses on five themes, described on our website: housing and dishousing, ecology and metabolism, change and crisis, imagination and design, data and place. We pursue these themes through cross- and interdisciplinary methods, prioritising collaborative research, public and community engagement, and the development of international comparative frameworks.

Cities Methodologies

Inaugurated in 2009, this annual event is a pan-UCL cross-disciplinary initiative to showcase innovative methods in urban research, drawing together work from undergraduate programmes, through to PhD studies, staff, and the wider urban research community. An annual London exhibition and events programme takes place in the third term each year, together with a coordinated programme of ‘spin-off' exhibitions in other cities internationally.

Stadtkolloquium: Urban PhD Research Seminars and Annual Workshop

The UCL Urban Laboratory organises an annual interdisciplinary work-in-progress workshop for PhD students to present and discuss their research projects. This is an open and informal space to discuss theoretical, practical or methodological questions and problems. Individual colloquia, feedback sessions and reading groups are also held throughout the year. The Stadtkolloquium aims to create a supportive environment for urban researchers who would like feedback and to meet peer PhD students from other departments. Lively round-table discussions are held on diverse urban questions across various disciplinary backgrounds, including Geography, Architecture, Anthropology,

Literature, Cultural Studies, Development Studies, History, Environmental Studies, Health

Sciences, Fine Art, Planning, Engineering.
