University of Warwick EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY NEWSLETTER Welcome to the first edition of the termly Equality and Diversity Newsletter. The purpose of the Newsletter is to brief colleagues on Equality and Diversity issues. Current and future events will be highlighted, as well as information provided by a number of University Support Services. Progress on the University’s work on a number of Equality Charter Marks will also be reported: Athena SWAN Underrepresentation of women in STEMM departments & GEM – Gender Equality in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Athena SWAN The University holds an Institutional Silver Athena Award, Warwick is one of only 4 institutions to hold this award. Conference Care Support Awards Small awards of up to £100 are available to academic, research and teaching staff and those in appropriate support or administrative posts, to contribute to the extra childcare/caring costs associated with attendance at conferences/workshops. Gender Equality Charter Mark (GEM) Warwick has 3 departments with Silver Awards – Chemistry, Physics and Warwick Medical School 7 departments hold Bronze Awards ……………………………… All 10 STEMM departments now hold Athena awards. The Gender Equality Charter Mark (GEM) aims to address gender inequalities and imbalance in the arts, humanities and social sciences, in particular the underrepresentation of women in senior roles. The official launch of the charter mark will be in November 2014. Currently there are several successful networks: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Trans (LGBT), Working Parents, Black, Minority & Ethnic (BME) and a Disability Network which has only just formed and met for the first time in September 2014. Their remit is for all equality and diversity issues primarily that affect staff, but also for some student matters (students should refer to Student Support Services or the Student Union in the first instance). The team are also involved with the development of policies, procedures and guidance on equality and diversity issues. The Equality and Diversity Network meet on a termly basis, the meetings are open to ALL staff at the university as well as Departmental E&D Representatives and Departmental Disability Coordinators. The network reports to the Equality and Diversity Committee, which is a joint committee reporting into Senate and Council. Work with departments and colleagues to help implement effective equality and diversity practices. Collect and analyse equality data to monitor the effectiveness of our policies as well as meet legal obligations. Who are the Equality and Diversity Team……..?
