seniors forums One Saturday a month, at the Surrey campus, the Seniors Program is pleased to present a series of lectures/discussions on topics of general interest. Each talk is about 45-50 minutes long, with time for questions and discussion following. The American Presidency: The Use and Misuse of Power Saturday, September 23 1 - 2:30 pm | Room 2600 The US Constitution states simply: “The Executive Power shall be vested in a president of the United States”, but never defines what that means. It is therefore up to each president to define executive power. Not surprisingly, some presidents enjoyed using power, some failed to use power, and some abused power. Speaker: Professor Aberbach is a charter member of SFU’s History department where he taught courses on the US Presidency and American Foreign Policy from 1965 until he retired in 1997. He is the recipient of SFU’s Excellence in Teaching Award. Who Wrote the Bible, or Why Am I an Atheist? The Inside Story of the Vancouver City Council Saturday, October 28 1 - 2:30 pm | Room 2600 Saturday, November 25 1 - 2:30 pm | Room 2600 We will look at the religious behaviour of humans from prehistoric times to the present, focusing on the transformations in religions that took place when humans created settlements. We then turn our attention to the background circumstances of those who invented the Old and New Testaments, spelling out some of the implications of all of the above for the current debates over the place of religion in government and politics. Speaker: Professor Cousineau is a retired member of the SFU Criminology Department. Six-term councillor Gordon Price reveals what goes on in the minds of those who occupy the padded chairs in City Hall’s council chamber. One ex-councillor suggested that the secret to surviving a 10-hour public meeting is to sleep with your eyes open. In this talk, distilled from experience on City, GVRD and TransLink Boards, Price will open your eyes to the real workings of our political system. Speaker: Gordon Price is Director of SFU’s City Program in the Department of Continuing Studies. The lectures take place in the Westminster Savings Credit Union lecture theatre, Room 2600, mezzanine level, Simon Fraser University Surrey, 250 - 13450 102nd Avenue, Surrey, BC. Admission is free and open to anyone of any age on a first-come, first served basis. Arrive early to ensure a seat.
