C4.2 Curriculum development
When I joined SQU in 1999 the department was expanding in research and teaching.
Since that time I joined the curriculum committee where I took an active role in the
development of curriculum. In addition to that I worked with my colleagues in
Department of Chemistry in the modification and improvement of the existing courses
as well the degree plans. I developed the theoretical and laboratory components of the
following courses:

Developed the course “Analytical Chemistry for Health Sciences (Chem3347)” 2003.
Developed the graduate course “Spectrochemical Analysis-CHEM-6643”.
This is an advanced elective course on spectroscopy for chemical analysis
suitable for postgraduate students.
Acted as a chair of the curriculum committee that developed the Applied
Chemistry Bachelor of Science degree, 2006. I have been responsible for
coordination of all activities during the development of this degree.

C5.2 Mentorship of Junior Faculty
In my capacity as a senior faculty member, I have been actively involved in
mentorship and collaborations with young Omani faculty members as well as newly
appointed demonstrators. This has been a dynamic process in order to prepare these
young researchers and educators for a career in research and in teaching in tertiary
education institutions.

Dr. Haider Al-Lawati joined the Analytical group as a lecturer where he
received training in our research group preceding his Ph.D. study leave. This
collaboration has successfully materialized in publication of three research
papers (publications # 25, 28 and 31).
After he obtained his Ph.D. in 2008 the collaboration with Al-Lawati
continued. We have initiated together two research proposals funded by His
Majesty Trust Fund and by SQU internal research grants in 2009. We have
also obtained together another external fund by the National Research
Council. From this collaboration we have successfully published a number
of papers in reputable journals in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Dr. Bushra Al-Whaibi, our young Analytical Chemistry Assistant Professor
has received training in various aspects of teaching Analytical Chemistry
with me.
Ishag Al-Nafai, our newly appointed demonstrator is currently working with
me in two research projects to strengthen his research abilities before
leaving for his postgraduate studies abroad next year.

C6. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
C6.1 Research Experience
1. During my Ph.D. I acquired a strong background in Analytical Methodology and
Instrumentation Development with emphasis on analysis of drugs in
pharmaceutical and biological matrixes. In addition, I developed special skills in
using Chemometrics for solving problems in spectroscopic and chromatographic
analyses.
2. As a postdoctoral research fellow at the National Institute of Environmental
Studies (NIES) in Japan I developed an automated system for monitoring of air
pollutants using GC with nitrogen phosphorous detector and mass detectors. The
project proposes a fully automated system that can be easily miniaturized later.
3. Flow Injection Analysis (FIA), Sequential Injection Analysis (SIA), GC and GCMS are of prime interest.
4. In the last few years I have acquired a vast experience with molecular modeling
and theoretical computational techniques. During my Ph.D. training I had a
chance to obtain an extensive training in this field. Unfortunately, due to the
lack of facilities initially at SQU we were unable to explore this important field.
Now with the introduction of the High Computational Facility at SQU and also
due to the availability of fast desk-top computers we commenced in using
theoretical calculations to support experimental findings as well as to explain the
mechanism and behavior of various chemical systems. Use of ab-initio methods,
semiempirical calculations and molecular dynamics to model chemical systems
is currently under investigation. Special interest is in mechanisms of
enantiomeric separations using host-guest systems.
5. Automation and miniaturization of instrumental techniques are receiving lots of
interest lately. I am currently developing flow injection fluorescence and
chemiluminescence microfluidics and lab-on-chip devices for analysis of
pharmaceutical, biological and environmental samples. Currently I am also
developing electrochemiluminescence sensors using modified electrodes in
conjunction with metal and semiconductor based nanomaterials.

C6.2 Research Collaborations
The following are collaborations with researchers outside the analytical chemistry
group:
• I have strong collaborations with Dr. Saleh Al-Busafi from the Organic
Chemistry Division. We submitted a research grant that has been funded by
the SQU internal grants. I participated with him in co-supervising a number
of BSc. students using this grant. We have successfully published one paper
in a good journal in 2011 (Publication #4).
• Last year I commenced on a joined project on photophysical properties of
novel lanthanide complexes using various spectrochemical techniques with
Dr. Nawal Al-Rasbi who joined the department recently.
• Recently, I have initiated research collaboration with Dr. Emad Khudaish
(electrochemist) on the development of electrochemiluminescence sensors
for environmental and medicinal applications. (Project # 11).
