Course Prerequisites: Open to students who have successfully completed Ukrainian Level 1 or who can demonstrate equivalent
competence.
Academic Level: Intermediate
Course Unit Value: 1 (2 half-course units, taught in conjunction).
Runs in (2013/14) Terms 1 and 2
Weekly Contact Hours: 4
Compulsory for: Ukrainian and East European Studies, Russian and Ukrainian, Russian with Ukrainian, Modern Languages combined
degrees of which Ukrainian is a component.
Pass required for: Progression to Year Abroad/ Ukrainian Level 3
Open to: All SSEES undergraduates, affiliate students, also UCL undergraduates, subject to timetable and resourcing constraints
Module Outline
This is a course for students who have successfully completed Ukrainian Level 1, or who can demonstate equivalent competence in
Ukrainian. The course consists of two components, comprehension and production, each of which has the value of 0.5 of a course-unit (see
Course Details above). Both components are taught in conjunction.
At the end of the module you should have fulfilled the following aims and objectives
Aims:

to build on the knowledge of Ukrainian already acquired and to attain (in all language skills) a level of competence at which you can
function effectively in a wide range of situations;

to read texts in Ukrainian in the next stage of your degree (in courses requiring reading of literary and other texts);

to use Ukrainian effectively during your year abroad;

to develop awareness of problems of translation;

to develop awareness of and interest in wider aspects of Ukraine and societies where Ukrainian is spoken;

to gain a sound linguistic foundation for the Ukrainian Level 3 Course.
Objectives:

to understand a wide range of authentic spoken and written Ukrainian from predictable topic areas; extract required information and
record it accurately and coherently in English;

manipulate spoken and written Ukrainian with appropriate and accurate use of lexis and grammatical structures in a variety of
contexts and registers; speak with confidence and accuracy appropriate to this level about many aspects of Ukraine, its life and
culture;

demonstrate understanding of translation by discussing problems of specific translations from and into Ukrainian; successfully
translate a range of texts from and into Ukrainian;

demonstrate knowledge and active use of more complex grammatical structures and a wide range of vocabulary in Ukrainian.
Assessment Methods
Assessment Style: Examination
Ukrainian Language Level 2A: Aural (45 minutes); written (3 hours); Ukrainian Language Level 2B: Oral (20 minutes); written (3 hours)
Assessment Weighting: Oral (15%); aural (15%); written (70%)
Ukrainian Language Level 2A: Aural (20%); written (80%); Ukrainian Language Level 2B: Oral (20%); written (80%)
Feedback
Examination: Students will normally receive generic feedback on examination papers.
Preliminary Reading
Vacation reading will be set for students progressing from Language Level 1. Course materials will include resources authored by the
teacher, as well as textbooks, online resources and other materials.
