The background/rationale used to bolster the recommendation for the Lakeview Room was: Once the new academic buildings are occupied, the Life Sciences Building must be vacated and students cannot be required to enter the space. All the functions (classrooms and offices) currently in the Life Science (LS) building are scheduled to move to the new academic building sometime between May 11 and August 1 and the one remaining function left unaccounted for in terms of space is the ASCR office; The request supports our institutional planning priorities: Strategic Plan Objectives: 1.4 Enhance student support and student engagement and; 5.2 Support/increase cultural activities at the college; and Education Master Plan Objectives: 5.1 Improve student engagement among all students; and 5.2 Develop a vibrant student center; and The need for a new space for ASCR and a multicultural center was included in CSSO’s 2012-13 program review and ranked within the top 5 in the Student Development division’s resource request prioritization. The FPC provided the following usage information over the last year in their response. Upward Bound: Used on a weekly basis over the summer for their meetings English Dept.: Used 4-6 times year for “grading / norming” Academic Senate has been using consistently for their meeting this year, on Fridays ASCR Clubs: this semester we have 2 clubs using it weekly CSEA: uses at least 2 times a year for their larger meetings CTE: Pru uses this room when she has her 7th graders visiting, along with a few other functions Academy of the Redwoods: uses 5-6 times a year for dances, larger meetings, testing There are many more “1 time” users that happen on average 1-3 times per month. CR also uses for any activity where food might be served, that needs to be separated from the main dining hall. The President considered the original recommendation and the FPC’s response/comments and decided to balance the needs of both our students and our faculty/staff by moving forward with allocating the large Lakeview room to ASCR and keeping the small Lakeview Room as a lounge area for faculty and staff. Some alternative faculty/staff lounge areas were considered, but given the limited time, these improvements won’t be pursued at present. Alternative meeting space for the Lakeview room includes existing space across the campus and space in the soon to be opened new academic buildings. It is important to note that ASCR cannot continue in their current location once that building is vacated, so allocating space in the Student Center is appropriate. Work will begin to renovate the Lakeview room into usable student government/multicultural center space this summer.
