Annual Program Review Update
Program/Discipline: Computer and Electronics Technology (CET10/10L)
Date:
March 17, 2008

Trends and Relevant Data
1. Has there been any change in the status of your program or area? (Have you
shifted departments? Have new degrees or certificates been created by your
program? Have you added or deleted courses? Have activities in other programs
impacted your area or program? For example, a new nursing program could
cause greater demand for life-science courses.) If not, skip to #2.
Note: curricular changes should be addressed under 12-14.
College of the Redwoods’ ability to supply CET courses has been drastically reduced
over the last several years. CR lists CET 10 and CET 10L in the catalog. These are the
only courses offered in this program. The electronics laboratory was dismantled and
equipment was slated for salvage. At the request of the Division Chair the equipment
was stored and the course outlines have been updated. CET10 and CET10L classes
are currently in progress this Spring 2008 semester.
2. Have there been any significant changes in enrollment, retention, success rates, or
student demographics that impact your discipline? If so, please include data
sheets (Excel or Word format) showing these changes.
In the Fall of 2005, two sections of this course enrolled 47 students. Because this
course was not being offered, students were offered a course substitution for their
degrees and certificates. This was a very unsatisfactory solution as the employers in
the area require knowledge and skills in electronics that were lacking for the students
to qualify for employment. In this Spring 2008 semester, one section is currently
underway, and CET10 and CET10L will be offered each Fall semester in the future.
3. Occupational programs must review the update of their labor-market data, some
of it provided by Institutional Research, to illustrate that their program:
a. Meets a documented labor market demand,
b. Does not represent duplication of other training programs (in the region), and
c. Is of demonstrated effectiveness as measured by the employment and
completion success of its students.
According to the Workforce Industry Board Targets of Opportunity Report 2007,
Electrical and Electronics Manufacturing has been growing at nearly 2% per year in
Humboldt County. Niche Manufacturing is one of the six Targets of Opportunity
providing the greatest demand for workers in the County. CET10 and CET10L are the
only courses offered at CR in this area.

Other Resources
4. Do you have needs (professional development, library resources, and so forth) not
previously required by the discipline or not previously addressed in budget or
equipment considerations? Please describe. ( see p. 54)
The current budget does not include equipment or replacement supplies that are
needed .
5. Does your discipline need additional support from Student Services beyond that
previously provided?
This discipline needs no additional support from Student Services.

6. Complete the Faculty Employment Grids below (please list full- and part-time
faculty numbers in separate rows):
This program has not offered courses since the Fall semester of 2005 because of a loss
of one full-time faculty member. CET courses are currently running (spring 2008) and
will continue to be offered each Fall semester.

Do you need more full-time faculty? Associate faculty? If yes, explain why and
be sure to include data sheets justifying the need.
No additional full-time or part-time staff are needed at this time.

There are no dedicated CET faculty. CET10 and CET10L courses are currently being
taught by Mike Peterson.
Do you need more full-time staff? Part-time staff? If yes, explain why and be sure
to include data sheets justifying the need. (see Appendix B p. 55)
No additional full-time or part-time staff are needed at this time.
8. If necessary, to clarify your needs, please comment on current available staff and
distribution of FTE's for contract and part-time faculty. Describe strengths and
weaknesses of faculty/staff as appropriate to program's current status or future
development.
No additional full-time or part-time staff are needed at this time, therefore no comment
on current available staff is necessary.
Facilities
9. Comment on facilities the program uses, their current adequacy, and any
immediate needs. Have your discipline’s facilities needs changed? If so, how?
Please provide a data-based justification for any request that requires new or
additional facilities construction, renovation, remodeling or repairs. (p. 58)
During the summer 2007 the electronics lab was dismantled to remodel the building for
the Nursing Lab. The equipment was requested to be put into storage for future use.
PS 108 was offered as a space that could be used to teach in and store the usable
remaining equipment. It is recommended by the Division Chair that at such time as
the Automotive and Diesel areas are remodeled that the electronics lab be incorporated
into the new space.
Equipment
10. Have your discipline’s equipment needs changed? If so, how? Is equipment in
need of repair outside of your current budget? Please provide a data-based
justification for any request that requires a new or additional budget allotment.
At this time, equipment needs are still being evaluated. Ongoing supplies such as
solder and electronic components will require minimal expenditures. These costs are
estimated to be about $200 - $400 per year.
Learning Outcomes Assessment Update (Appendix A - p. 48)
11. How has your area or program been engaged in student learning outcomes
assessment?
a.
Summarize your results.
b.
What did your program learn from these results that enabled you to
improve teaching and learning in the discipline?
c.
How have faculty been made aware of the need to assess SLOs?
CET10 and CET10L were not offered in 2006 and 2007. No SLO assessment has been
engaged in recently.

Continue offering CET10 and CET10L each Fall semester.
Consider changing CET10 and CET10L, “Survey of Electronics” from a
Computer and Electronics Technology course to an IT or MT program course.
