Provide evidence that this course/revision is needed (purpose of proposal). The proposed change for this course is to reduce the unit load from 2 lab units to 1 lab unit. To meet the changes in clinical skills and techniques many skills have been incorporated into courses offered earlier in the ASN sequencing (N 51, N 52, N 11, N 53). Additionally, much of the previous N53 content has been moved into N11. Course content has updated to meet technical changes in nursing as well as to provide students with the skills necessary to perform in the clinical setting. Therefore, the number of skills actually taught in N 53 has been reduced necessitating this change. 7. Describe the students who will enroll (include estimated number). Third semester RN students; 40 students; 2 sections with 20 students each 8. Parallel courses--what is the relation of this course to existing courses (modify/overlap/replace)? This course is designed as the capstone skills course and compliments N 23. 9. Capital Outlay: Describe the equipment for this class. Presently have: All necessary supplies and training equipment. OUTCOMES AND ASSESSMENTS 1. COURSE OUTCOMES/OBJECTIVES: List the primary instructional objectives of the class. Formulate some of them in terms of specific measurable student accomplishments, e.g., specific knowledge and/or skills to be attained as a result of completing this course. For degree-applicable courses, include objectives in the area of "critical thinking." Upon successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: Competently perform sterile and non-sterile advanced nursing procedures in the following areas: venipuncture, blood administration, tracheostomy care, endotracheal suctioning and central line care and medication administration. Utilize therapeutic communication skills in the assessment and interactions with all individuals, families, and health team members involved with advanced nursing procedures. Apply principles of teaching and learning in the assessment of client, family and health team member learning needs and when instructing on selected procedures in simulated situations. Manage nursing procedures with organization and thoroughness. Calculate medication dosages for parenteral and intravenous medications with 95% accuracy. Manage advanced nursing procedures for individual clients throughout the lifespan. Perform advanced cardiac and neurological assessment skills and document findings appropriately. Demonstrate establishment of professional peer relationships. Assume responsibility for own learning by preparing for lab, participating in discussions and activities, and by completing all required course work. Utilize knowledge from other courses and computer technology to gather pertinent data/information to enhance learning. 2. COLLEGE LEVEL CRITICAL THINKING TASKS/ASSIGNMENTS: Degree applicable courses must include critical thinking tasks/assignments. This section need not be completed for non-credit courses. Describe how the course requires students to independently analyze, synthesize, explain, assess, anticipate and/or define problems, formulate and assess solutions, apply principles to new situations, etc. Skills performance evaluations require the student to assess a simulated client situation, identify problems and client needs, and formulate appropriate interventions and plan of care according to standards of nursing practice. Additionally these skills will be applied in the clinical setting for further assessment of critical thinking skills. Method of Evaluation includes: Performance Evaluations of specific skills Drug Calculation Proficiency Written Examinations (quizzes and comprehensive final) 3. ASSESSMENT Degree applicable courses must have a minimum of one response in category A, B, or C. If category A is not checked, the department must explain why substantial writing assignments are an inappropriate basis for at least part of the grade. A. This course requires a minimum of two substantial (500 words each) written assignments which demonstrate standard English usage (grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary) and proper paragraph and essay development. In grading these assignments, instructors shall use, whenever possible, the English Department’s rubric for grading the ENGL 150 exit essay.
