This course was previously offered to supply the community with individuals who have had additional
training beyond the Certified Nursing Assistant to provide assistance to people at home. With changes in
reimbursement for home care services, less HHA had been needed in the county. At present individuals needing
training must go to Santa Rosa. Area 1 Agency on Aging and Hospice of Humboldt County have requested that
CR again train Home Health Aids (HHA)

Students must learn to prepare meals for individuals at home. A $10 fee will be
charged. Students must have current TB (tuberculosis) testing

CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
The catalog description should clearly state the scope of the course, its level, and what kinds of student goals the
course is designed to fulfill.
Training and practice of the skills used by a certified nursing assistant to provide basic
care of clients in their own homes. Upon course completion students are eligible for
State Certification as a Home Health Aide.
Note: A $10 fee will be charged for materials.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
What should the student be able to do as a result of taking this course? State some of the objectives in terms of specific,
measurable student accomplishments.
Upon completion of this course, the student will: 1. describe the role and responsibilities
of the certified home health aid; 2. discuss common observations and documentation to
be completed by the HHA; 3. identify organizational and time management technique in a
daily work schedule; 4. apply basic care concept to the care receipient living at home; 5.
describe effective communication techniques for the HHA; 6. describe common
emotional and spiritual needs of terminally ill clients and their families; 7. plan a meal for
a client on a therapeutic diet; 8. discuss priniciples of safe food handling and storage; 9.
identify principles of providing a safe, clean healthy environment; and 10. be eligible for
state certification as a home health aide.
COURSE CONTENT

The content for this course is standardized in the Model Curriculum for Home Health Aids
prepared by the Chancellor's Office: Basic hygiene, Maslow's Hierarchy of needs,
patient rights, cleanliness and safety of the individual at home and his environment, time
management, and caring.
Concepts: What concepts do students need to understand to demonstrate course outcomes?
Basic care principles are transferable from residents in long term care facilities to
individuals at home, including communication, medical asepsis, physical and emational
needs of clients.
Issues: What primary issues or problems, if any, must students understand to achieve course outcomes (including
such issues as gender, diversity, multi-culturalism, and class)?
Personal and professional boundaries, cultural and spiritual aspects of care
Skills: What skills must students master to demonstrate course outcomes?
Provision of personal care, using basic principles of hygiene, privacy, caring, meal preparation,
management of laundry and dishes of the ill clients at home
REPRESENTATIVE LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
What will the students be doing (i.e., Listening to lectures, participating in discussions and/or group activities,
attending a field trip, etc.)? Relate the activities directly to the Course Learning Outcomes.
