A course that will study and explore selected films from the francophile world. Students will analyze and discuss different aspects of the diverse French cultures and the issues raised in the films. Express, in discussion and essay, an aesthetic and intellectual appreciation of the films viewed. Distinguish multiple points of view through discussions. Assess the strengths and weaknesses of each film. REPRESENTATIVE LEARNING ACTIVITIES: What will the students be doing (i.e. listening to lectures, participating in discussions and/or group activities, attending a field trip, etc.)? Relate the activities directly to the Course Learning Outcomes. Students will attend an introductory lecture before viewing each film. They will view and analyze five films from the francophile world. They will participate in post-film discussions and through them, learn to identify some of the unique cultural, political, or sociological aspects presented in the films. Multiple perspectives will be presented during the discussions, and the students will respond to these viewpoints. The students will be encouraged to ask questions and develop personal reactions to the issues raised in the films. ASSESSMENT TASKS: How will the students show evidence of achieving the Course Learning Outcomes? Representative assessment tasks: Required assessments for all sections – to include but not limited to: Participate in the discussions. An essay assignment for each film viewed. A written final exam. Sound cinema and poetic realism. Wartime cinema. Postwar drama. The films depict the historical, political, and social context of the francophile world.
