This course will provide educators in preschool programs the skills to enhance early literacy curriculum. Given the low
reading scores in California schools these skills are needed to ensure children enter elementary school ready to learn to read.

and development programs.

I. CATALOG AND OUTLINE
1. CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
A course to prepare current or future early childhood teachers and caregivers to enhance the early literacy outcomes of young
children by improving teachers’ knowledge of early literacy development, and their skills in teaching early literacy to young
children from birth through age 5. Part 2 focuses on infusing literacy into the preschool curriculum.
NOTE: This is one part of a three part series including ECE 23, 24 and 25.

problems, formulate and assess solutions, apply principles to new situations, etc.

3. ASSESSMENT
Degree applicable courses must have a minimum of one response in category A, B, or C. If category A is not checked, the department
must explain why substantial writing assignments are an inappropriate basis for at least part of the grade.
A. This course requires a minimum of two substantial (500 words each) written assignments which demonstrate standard English
usage (grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary) and proper paragraph and essay development. In grading these assignments,
instructors shall use, whenever possible, the English Department’s rubric for grading the ENGL 150 exit essay. Substantial writing
