Faculty Replacement Position (check one)

Stable or growing discipline or program needs replacement for FT faculty who have left
within 1-2 years
Stable discipline or program needs replacement for FT faculty who have left within threefour years
Stable discipline or program can justify replacement for FT faculty who have left within
five years or more
Outside accreditation is at risk without FT hire
Provide justification and documentation. Include when the position became vacant and
the incumbent to be replaced.
Retirements since last hire include May 2003 (Bill Treglown), May 2008 (Bob Seaman),
May 2010 (Dave Banducci), May 2013 (Mike Woychak) and upcoming May 2014 (Mike
Cox). All full-time faculty with no replacements.
The program has maintained stable enrollments for the courses we offer, but with no
replacement faculty and other budget cuts (associate faculty reductions) it has reduced
our offerings consistently over the past ten years and has affected our overall numbers.
Even with lower section numbers offered due to faculty retirements over the past 10
years, data indicates that these sections are filled at or above district averages. Current
faculty discussions and current data analysis cannot identify additional evidence of other
factors leading to declining enrollments other than declining full-time faculty level. With
state Physical Education repeatability changes, various courses will need to be added in
order to meet the demand of students who seek to continually improve their personal

health but are now being left out of physical education enrollment process. The program
has always provided a wide selection of opportunities in health, physical education and
athletics that has emphasized the importance of personal fitness and wellness to combat
disease and sedentary lifestyle. Our programs have also provided a diverse student
population to the district, built stable and committed community relationships, supported
and helped foster personal wellness, and generated consistent revenue.
In addition, the department expects to have an approved ADT Degree by the end of
Spring 2014 semester. A full-time faculty member is essential to not only to teach
courses within the degree, but to collaborate and assist with course development,
assessments, and be available to coach a sport.

Enrollment data over past two years indicate program is stable

4. FT/PT Ratio: Indicate which statement/s are confirmed by the data: (0 -5 points)
Program has no full-time faculty
X
FT/PT ration below 50/50 percent
FT/PT ratio below 60/40 percent
FT/PT ratio below 75/25 percent
r3/12/12
pg 2
FT/PT ratio results in critical lack of effective oversight for associate faculty
Reliable pool of well-qualified associate faculty is unavailable
(In the case of non-teaching faculty positions, the criteria will be the deviation from norms
obtained from like institutions)
Provide justification and documentation.
The program has absorbed four fulltime retirements since 2003 and will be losing another
fulltime faculty after this spring with no replacements. This loss would leave us with 3 fulltime
faculty and 8 associates. Compare this with 2003 when there were 7 fulltime faculty and 11
associates.
5. Program/Student Outcomes (0 – 5 points)
Provide a narrative justifying need for full-time faculty in order to maintain and/or improve
program and student learning outcomes (one-page max), based on the following: (0 – 5 points)


Demonstrate a clear need for FT faculty in order to maintain program outcomes
Justification demonstrates a clear need for FT faculty in order to achieve student learning
outcomes
Narrative:
Course and program outcomes, which had been the responsibility of seven faculty members in
2003, will soon become the responsibility of three. Due to increasing assessment at the course
and program levels, an additional faculty member will aid in assessment, curricula development
of kinesiology courses, maintenance of current course offerings, and be an integral member of
designing courses that meet a new Kinesiology degree (per Chancellor’s office Transfer Model
Curriculum) that is being developed by the current faculty.
Physical Education program outcomes include assessing student’s fitness levels and the
department is working to add a Wellness component to our activity classes and grow this
component to include faculty/staff wellness education. By adding (actually replacing many past
full-time faculty), a new position will add back lost TLU’s. This will allow for Health Education,
Kinesiology lecture courses, and physical activity courses to be developed that are in-line with
current fitness industry trends as well the development of courses that follow the ever-changing
subject specialties of Kinesiology.
Coaching is the other component of this position. Athletic Program Outcomes are linked directly
to success of student-athletes both in the classroom and through state athletic guidelines. To
ensure program outcomes related to the integrity, vitality, and stability of our sports programs, a
full-time coach is necessary. Our department is known regionally as one of high integrity and we
want to continue establishing that reputation among our coaching colleagues. A full-time person
in this position will maintain a sense of integrity when following rules set forth by the California
Commission on Athletics and be here for the true reason of teaching and mentoring the studentr3/12/12

athlete. Intercollegiate coaching positions positively enhance the diversity levels of our student
population.
