Request for Tenure Track Faculty Program: Social Work/Addiction Studies/NAS Initiator(s): Tracey Thomas 1. Program(s) Supported by the Discipline: Program Initiation for Social Work to revitalize Addiction Studies program, develop ADT- Social Work, Liberal Arts Behavioral and Social Sciences 2. Job Description. Separate requests are required for each position sought. Please indicate if this request is site specific and the location(s). Faculty member will teach courses which are relevant to discipline of Social Work such as courses which would lend to opportunities for employment in behavioral health, human and social services as well as mental health, and addiction recovery. Faculty position would also possess qualifications for Native American Studies. Faculty position would establish an ADT-Social Work degree pathway for students to both a Social Work degree at CSU’s or a pathway to enter a vocational path for drug and alcohol/addiction recovery and other mental health and wellness service industries as identified in labor market research throughout our district. Transfer Model Curriculum (TMC) identifies Social Work as ‘in the queue’ for vetting in the 2014-15 year. Students transferring to Humboldt State University’s B.S. in Social Work would have the mentoring and modeling they need for success, as well the continuity and expertise that a full-time Social Work/Native American studies/Addiction Studies faculty could offer. Faculty will also work with students on field placements and work experience. Development of an ADTSocial Work pathway would allow for utilization of existing courses in Psychology, Sociology, Native American Studies, and Health to name a few to construct a Human or Social Services certificate. Faculty position would oversee the existing grant with CRDN which prioritizes funds to build a Social Work Pathway between Del Norte Unified School district and DN Charter schools to establish a direct pathway and link to HSU Social Work program which includes NAS 1 diversity requirement for HSU admissions. This grant allows our Del Norte community and the Hoopa Yurok tribe to take a lead for the district in establishing a faculty position. This grant could provide a framework to establish linkages with area high schools to establish similar partnerships with area high schools throughout the district. 3. Targets of Opportunity are the Redwood Coastal region’s most promising industries for new jobs and businesses to grow. Targets of Opportunity Industries are sources of sustained economic growth within Del Norte, Humboldt, Trinity, Siskiyou and Mendocino counties. There are six target industries which have grown faster than the rest of the region’s economy. Over the last decade and a half, they have demonstrated the greatest potential for economic renewal. One of the six targets is Diversified Health Care which includes Social and Human Services Assistants. Enrollments in Addiction Studies Certificate have grown since 2008-9 with 336 students to 415 students in 2012-13 and a peak enrollment of 477 students in 2010-11. Certificate completions have risen from nine in 2008-9 to 11 in 2010-11 to 14 in 2011-12 to 20 in 2012-13. New Program/Discipline Position Program Initialization process complete x State curriculum approval complete r3/12/12 pg 2 Program has grown significantly without FT faculty Independent marketing data suggests viability of new program Provide justification and documentation. Behavioral and Social Sciences faculty fully recognize and respect that the Academic Senate is currently reviewing the Program Initiation process. The intent of submitting this faculty request was not to bypass any process and respectfully we ask that it not be interpreted in that fashion. It is submitted collegially to perhaps create an example of how the program review process and our continuous and ongoing dialogue may provide the framework to raise visibility of opportunities for growth in programs such as Addiction Studies to respond to students as well as trends in labor market research in our region. Perhaps a strategy for program initiation can be through Program Reviews. 4. FT/PT Ratio: Indicate which statement/s are confirmed by the data: (0 -5 points) x Program has no full-time faculty FT/PT ration below 50/50 percent FT/PT ratio below 60/40 percent FT/PT ratio below 75/25 percent FT/PT ratio results in critical lack of effective oversight for associate faculty Reliable pool of well-qualified associate faculty is unavailable (In the case of non-teaching faculty positions, the criteria will be the deviation from norms obtained from like institutions) Provide justification and documentation. There are currently no full-time faculty teaching in the Addictions Studies, Social Work. Native American Studies is taught by Associate Faculty throughout the district except on the Mendocino Coast a full time faculty who teach NAS. 5. Program/Student Outcomes (0 – 5 points) Provide a narrative justifying need for full-time faculty in order to maintain and/or improve program and student learning outcomes (one-page max), based on the following: (0 – 5 points) Demonstrate a clear need for FT faculty in order to maintain program outcomes Justification demonstrates a clear need for FT faculty in order to achieve student learning outcomes Narrative: r3/12/12 pg 3 The Social Work/NAS/Addiction Studies faculty position would contribute to the institutional planning goals by supporting course assessment, program planning, SLO’s and PLO’s as well as increased enrollments of underrepresented students and persistence of underrepresented student populations specifically our Native American communities. Faculty position would support Strategic Equity in Hiring Plan as well as EP.1.6.2 Based on priorities identified in the Student Equity Plan, develop a plan for narrowing the achievement gap for underrepresented student populations. There are currently no full-time faculty members in Addiction Studies. One-hundred percent of the teaching in Addiction Studies is done by part-time faculty. Native American Studies is exclusively taught by part time faculty at Del Norte, Eureka and Klamath Trinity. A full time faculty at Mendocino Coast teaches NAS. A full-time faculty is essential to ensure the district’s needs are met with accreditation, assessments, curriculum updates, program reviews, serving on college committees, planning, etc. They would also be able to ensure students have access to resources in order to ensure and expedite their success in meeting their educational goals.
