College of the Redwoods Program Review Committee Executive Summary Adopted November 6, 2009 Mission Statement The College of the Redwoods’ Program Review Committee leads and facilitates authentic assessment as it relates to student success and planning at the institution for all subject and service areas. The committee reviews Annual and Comprehensive Program Reviews that provide the strong foundation upon which College of the Redwoods develops, identifies, states and documents quality improvement plans and goals including providing the direction of prioritization of funding, and support needs as organized under the strategic planning objectives. Objective: To provide an evaluative Executive Summary of this program’s review for authors, the Integrated Planning Committees, and the District. Program strengths:
192 students enrolled in various fine arts majors
Dynamic, strong program that supports many other programs and 9 Fine Arts AA graduates last academic year
students. One of its strongest attributes is the success rates of
basic skills students. Students taking basic skills classes have
benefited greatly by taking art classes. These positive
experiences have increased retention of at risk students

2. Program challenges/obstacles:
Disparity between full-time and part time faculty is a problem
Success lower for online courses that require substantial writing
Concern with lack of full-time faculty in Mendo
Maintaining and updating equipment in technology has direct
correlation with student outcomes

Steadily increasing enrollments (31, 26 and 22% over last 3 years Upgraded equipment and software

Commendation for strong articulation with HSU; During the last 12 months, the C.R. Music program reached a comprehensive articulation agreement with the H.S.U. Music department.
Big program for artists at HSU-curriculum was modeled after

Equipment and supplies needed for individual interests

PLO information for each area of LA fine arts was included in
assessment addendums. The outlines are well designed with clear
goals and measurable outcomes
7. Student Success/Achievement/Basic Skills
obstacles/challenges:
Students taking basic skills classes have benefited greatly by
taking art classes. These positive experiences have increased
retention of at risk students
Success rates incrementally increase with higher levels of Math
and English (70% experience success at Engl 150 level;
suggesting this is a good program for fostering college readiness
in developmental learners)
Enrollments consistently increased 22% per year
Online success rates lower than other, likely due to
increased writing requirements; Success is lower for
courses requiring more writing than other courses
Retention high (88%); cinema slightly lower due to one
course

The committee reviews Annual and Comprehensive Reports providing an opportunity to develop, identify, and state quality improvement plans and goals, as well as request priorities for funding, and support needs as organized under the strategic planning objectives. • Objective: This document provides the authors the means to respond the Executive Summary of the Program Review Committee.
