ALL Degree Applicable Credit classes must treat subject matter with a scope and intensity which require the student to study outside of class. Two hours of independent work done out of class are required for each hour of lecture. Lab and activity classes must also require some outside of class work. Describe how the course requires students to independently analyze, synthesize, explain, assess, anticipate and/or define problems, formulate and assess solutions, apply principles to new situations, etc. Students will study modern building techniques based on the “Uniform Building Code.” The student will be guided through various phases of construction. Problem solving will be emphasized. Lectures and lab assignments will be on an advanced level, with journeyman accomplishments being an expectation. Each student will become familiar with the components of a structure, namely, framing principles, foundations, floor joists and bridging, wall framing, roof trusses, ceiling and roof framing. The pamphlets and handouts are not at a college level; however, they are very satisfactory for this class. These reading materials have been used successfully for two years. The instructors evaluate them as functional and useful to the students.
