For example: The issue as to whether capital punishment (CP) or solitary confinement in penal institutions should be banned in the US requires consideration of such diverse disciplines of history, sociology, criminology, philosophy, and comparitive law. Such questions as to whether these practices deter future criminal behavior and whether they are "just" permeates this course Area C – Humanities communicate aesthetic and/or cultural ideas; analyze ideas or practices specific to the influence of culture on human expression. "Identify the diverse cultural, racial, and ethnic populations of the United States and recognize their perceptions as to the fairness of the criminal justice system.", ‐ requires students to consider the disparate impact of a wide variety of criminal justice policies (e.g. racial profiling) as applied to a variety of non‐white racial, ethic or cultural groups. The application of current theories such as "critical criminology" which examine whether the criminal justice system targets certain groups of people, are a part of this course. All of the course objectives directly address Area E as well. GE Criteria for Breadth and Generality GE courses should be broad and general in scope. Typically such courses are introductory‐‐ not advanced or specialized—and the content encompasses a broad spectrum of knowledge within a given field of study.
