30 Years of Supporting Teaching Excellence CENTER FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE Office of the Dean of Faculties and Associate Provost CTE – February Programming February 19: Involving and Engaging Students Using iPads The session will include presentations on integrating the use of tablet computers (specifically iPads) in both lecture and laboratory settings. Using the iPad with students enhances a shift from the professor to student-driven learning. This can be problem-oriented activities or simply to gain additional information about a topic discussed in class. The use of iPads for data collection in laboratory exercises that are designed to teach the basics of ecological research, along with other exercises in problem solving, will be demonstrated. We will show some applications currently in use to illustrate how instant access to information may be changing the way our students find, evaluate and use information. In addition, there will be discussion of lecture and laboratory instructor utilization of these tools to improve efficiency and student learning. Examples will be presented with the broad goal of demonstrating the potential for the technology in a learning environment and what future opportunities exist. Network access and ultraportable computing technology may indeed be changing the way we are thinking and learning. The “Google Brain” is upon us and we should be ready to foster learning in these rapidly changing technological environments. Register at: ERS.TAMU.EDU Facilitated by: Jason B. West and Dennie L. Helen Reed, Professor, Aerospace Engineering and 2013 Presidential Professor for Teaching Excellence This session will introduce an example of the impact of research-based technology on student learning. Specifically, as a complement to their traditional classes, undergraduate and graduate students are engaged in a multidisciplinary extracurricular hands-on project with NASA to design, launch, and operate a satellite. Implementation practices and lessons learned will be presented so as to benefit others in similar endeavors.
