General education provides students with skills in the areas of communication, computation, and critical thinking and introduces them to the basic modes of inquiry in the various academic disciplines. It promotes an understanding of values, a sense of civic responsibility, a commitment to preserving the natural environment, an appreciation of cultural diversity, and an understanding of the interrelationships among all societies. In conferring the Associate’s degree on any student, College of the Redwoods certifies that the student has demonstrated achievement of the following specific general education student learning outcomes: • The ability to think, read, and communicate critically • An awareness of the relationship of humanity to its natural, scientific, aesthetic, ethical, cultural, historical, political, and technical environment. • An understanding of the connections and relationships between and among academic disciplines. • Competency in locating, evaluating, and using information resources. • The ability to solve problems through research, analysis, and communication. It was suggested to convene a subcommittee on this topic (Maybe Rachel, Todd, Maggie, Martha, Peter Blakemore) Would learning outcomes all apply for each block Let committee meet before populating data. Consider comprehensive template in decisions, especially the concern by ACCJC about program sequence and program courses – keep in mind when reviewing and addressing; (Martha will be available for consulting) It was suggested that the subcommittee work set be aside until April. Notion to get alignment in place by end of semester for IR to populate the comprehensive template, then conduct the gen ed program review in fall; it was suggested the subcommittee consider who will write the gen ed review. Proposal is out there but needs faculty in gen ed areas to meet and discuss (possibly through the senate) Agreement by committee; Roxanne will support the faculty Decision: request senate assistance with Roxanne’s back up; put off forming subcommittee until later In consideration of consistency, PRC should look at the review in terms of individual committees (trends, budget, etc.) and complete an executive summary\ It was recommended to use the executive summaries from last fall and change the wording to “Comprehensive” 10:00 Comprehensive Program Review Author Presentation: Dental Assisting ~ author Hillary Reed (Program review and executive summary available on website) Noted: Comprehensives for the following: ECE March 5; MA, RN & LVN March 2; posted 1 week prior) 10:30 Adjourn
