Basic Skills Committee
November 6, 2015, SS 104
Agenda
1. Meeting Called to Order: Present: Erin Wall, Steve Jackson, Dave Bazard, Vinnie Peloso,
Liz Carlsen, Crislyn Parker-support
2. Approve October 16 Notes: Approved as stand.
3. Action Item(s):
3.1 CAP-Acceleration Travel Funding Proposal:
 Additional training is good for both associate faculty and basic skills acceleration.
This also aligns with the Basic Skills Plan. Approved.
3.2 Adjusted UTA expenses (attached): Approved.
4. Discussion Item(s):
4.1 Multiple-Measures Assessment Project update:
 Erin Wall, Sean Herrera-Thomas, Paul Chown, and Tina Vaughn attended a Multiple
Measures project update workshop in San Mateo. The RP Group would like CR to
implement multiple measures to a cohort of 400 new students in spring 2016. A major
revelation is evidence that high school GPA is a huge indicator of student readiness,
and should be incorporated (which we are doing). Cumulative GPA above certain
levels is an important factor. The data indicated that students who entered transfer
level English with a higher high school GPA did better than students who placed into
transfer level English based on higher testing scores.
 Recommendation: in the next 3 weeks, test but don’t show students Accuplacer’s
recommended classes; get their GPAs, then decide where to place the students, based
on these factors. Then track their success.
 Statistic: 70% of high school students with an overall GPA greater or equal to 2.6 put
directly into transfer level English will be successful.
 Recommended to collect self-reported GPA. Research shows self-reported GPA is
actually reliable. Recommended to begin student self-regulating.
 http://rpgroup.org/projects/multiple-measures-assessment-project
4.2 BSI Coordinator Webinar information (September and October):
 HS diploma not GED; on radar of non-credit; CR has on radar to build a program;
remedial and ESL through online (Alan Hancock college has program).
4.3 English Learners in High School Data (attached)
 Interesting historical information, although it would be nice in a percentage format.
5. Standing Agenda Item: Accreditation Matrix
6. Other/Future Agenda Items
Next meeting: December 4, 2015 (The November 20 meeting was cancelled to accommodate
the Faculty Prioritization process.)
